What sort of books does everyone like to read? Do you stick to only certain kinds of books that match your interest? Any recommendations?

I like reading non-fiction mixed with the occasional fantasy novel so my brain doesn't break from all the learning. I have tons of cookbooks and gardening books. My favorite book right now is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. It's a natural foods cookbook full of stuff like fermenting vegetables (sauerkraut) making your own dairy products (cheese and yogurt) sprouting, etc.

i'm a fantasy nerd.
i don't like sci fi, though, which is weird.
i also read stuff like Thoreau and Nietzsche and the DSM-IV. so, lots of philosophy and psychology.

right now i'm reading Etiquette for Dummies.

stephenie meyer's books are horribly written and pretty much all-over terrible, but they're highly addictive. so are christopher paolini's. i cannot wait until their last books come out this summer D:<

I like to do the fantasy to health/environment book switch too. :3 Right now I'm reading Hexwood by Diana Wynne Jones. She's very good and wrote the book Howls Moving Castle (which the movie was based on).

I LOVE Stephen King. For those who like him, I would recommend Swan Song by Robert McCammon.

I tended to stick to King as I like his writing style. That's more the reason why I choose books (or more likely stick with them) is due to writing style, not genre. Though, I have noticed that science fiction writers usually tend to kill the movement of the book with detailed descriptions of every gadget.

The last fantasy book I tried to read was Dr strange & mr. norrell which is huge at around 1000 pages. I couldn't get into it and ended up switching to another book. I think I felt the size was too daunting.

Aside from browsing Nourishing Traditions. I'm currently reading The Serpent and The Rainbow. It's written by an ethnobotanist and is about zombies. It reads like fiction though. It might be because I'm partial to travel stories and they always seem exotic and fiction-like.

I could never get into Stephen King. I know tons of people like him too.

Also, does anyone use the website www.goodreads.com?

some people tend to have a harder time with fantasy. they're easy for me to read because i'm schizoid with dissociative tendencies [lol mental problems].

lord of the rings is the mother of all fantasy, and yet i can't get into it as well as less creative novels say, eragon or twilight. i was a big c.s. lewis fantasy fan back in elementary school. i could never get into real-life-similar fiction.

i can hate on twilight & eragon for hours but i'm such a hypocrite because i secretly enjoy them. anybody else like this? i'm the same way about gossip girl, except after gossip girl i always regret reading it.

thanks onicoe for the goodreads website. [:

i think your mind must be a hobbit hole of resource-awesome.

i'm also a fanfiction nerd. i don't write anything but i used to be really big into reading tons. one of my favorites is Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Futures Past.

Haha, like 2 years ago i actually read a gossip girl book.
It read very odd, i couldn't keep up with the names and sudden scene changes...

I thought it was rubbish, and hate the fact they wasted the money on a show x3

But yeah...i got obsessed with the Twilight series, and am awaiting her last one in August eek

Has anyone read 'I Am America (And So Can You)' by Stephen Colbert?

the hobbit hole returns! XD

I'm a tolkien nerd. I've mellowed in my old age (ha) but I used to know how to read the runic writing and was contemplating learning elvish. I have almost all his books and a biography on him..

I want to read stephen colbert's book. Because I heart him and his crazy antics. My to-read list is already long enough.

(i also just spent $50 buying more books today.)

where do you buy them from?
I buy gently used from amazon.com, and they're as low as $0.25 cents sometimes =OOO

I bought like 6 or 7 books the other day, including stephen colbert hard back for only $15

I buy from amazon too. I buy used if the price plus the 3.50 in shipping is cheaper than the price offered by amazon, otherwise I'll buy amazon books and take advantage of the super savers shipping.

Here's what I ordered:

- Mulch It!: A Practical Guide to Using Mulch in the Garden and Landscape
- The Gormenghast Novels [Paperback] by Mervyn Peake
- Just Weeds: History, Myths, and Uses by Jones, Pamela
- The Gardener's Weather Bible: How to Predict and Prepare for Garden Success
- Farmers of Forty Centuries: Organic Farming in China, Korea, and Japan

I read Eragon. It was an okay read, but nothing spectacular. I remember giggling over some of the poorer writing in certain spots.

That said, my tastes tend toward non-fiction nowadays. Eco-nerd kind of stuff, history, biology, stuff like that.

Wow, it's been awhile since we posted in this O___x

I decided to share with everoyne what im reading, woot!

Im reading Lab 257
It's supposed to be based on true things XD

Its about Plum Island, off the coast of New York, and is off limits to the public.
It has the deadliest diseases that have ever been found on the Earth.

Its 'based on' declassified government documents, interviews, and acess to Plum Island's lab itself.

Supposedly, the island has had virus outbreaks, infected workers, and periodic contaminated raw sewage into the areas waters.

It also tells the new plans for Plum Island, since Department of Homeland security is there doing bioterrorism things XD

Im not done all the way yet >___>

That book sounds so interesting! I might have to read it. After I recover from Empty World which has been one of the most depressing books I've read. I still can't get over and it's been about a month since I finished.

Empty World is about a disease that wipes out pretty much all of man kind. It kills off the very old, then old, then young and then children. The book is based around one teen survivor. Extremely depressing because it doesn't kill of the animals (like The Stand did) and I keep thinking about all the animals left in homes, pet stores, vet clinics, etc. It's depressing on other levels, but I'll stop at that. :3

Right now I'm reading, again, Food & Healing by Anne Marie Colbin. This book ROCKS.
