Is it a sin to listen to bands like Cannibal Corpse, Devildriver, and Wednesday 13 and still be christian? I've had people tell me its not good to do that but give me your opinions

I don't see it as sin. That being said, if I said it was I'd be a hypocrite, since my top five fav. bands are Iron Maiden, Cradle of filth, murderdolls, the rasmus & Aterkrieg.

I honestly wouldn't say that it's a "sin" but i also wouldn't suggest it. Those might be freaking awesome bands but i think if you could find something with a similar sound but a bit less...er..dark*i've never listened to those bands specifically, so forgive me*? I used to listen to Slipknot, Korn, Jack off Jill, Otep, Static X and a bunch of not so happy bands...they sound really amazing musically, but their lyrics..well, most, are trash. Demon Hunter is so much better smile

I honestly dont think its a sin to listen to non-christian bands I mean, its impossible NOT to listen to these bands, they are on all stations, etc. I think the only way it could be a sin is if you choose to immitate whats in some of the lyrics, or choose to wear any profane merchandise.
If you listen for the love of music, dont worry. If you listen to learn a way of life. Then you have a problem.

If the lyrics are negative, they could prove dangerous to you. Read James in the New Testament, it tells of the power of the tongue and how it effects your life, and so does Proverbs. If you speak negatively, your words will be used against you, God gave us the power of life and death through speaking them, how much more lesser things. Also, listening to negative things can effect you in the long run because what is thought is eventually spoken and brought forth (such as a man thinketh so is he). I don't know of all the types of Christian bands out there, but if you want to be a serious christian that won't faint when tests come, you should consider it.
BTW, sorry for typing so much. sweatdrop

The thing about music is it influences your thinking as David played for Saul who was posessed it calmed him David was gifted and the only thin that could calm Saul's insanity was David's music. the reverse is also true. Satan has a foot in music now the music itsel may not be evil but the lyrics are. Would you sing a Hymn to the devil? I used to and my life slowly degraded and I was led astray by music. Now not every band is a bunch of Satan worshiping heretics. However just remember who Satan once was and ask do these lyrics glorify him. Music was never just entertainment in the old or new testament it was a form of worship. So be VERY CAREFUL! I use to listen to Slayer and the like and well it tainted me for a long time. Thank God For Demon Hunter and ZAO And many others Check out corner stone for a list. You'll find as I did some of things you listen too can change your mind.

It is a sin if you make any music your identity and not Him as your identity. Anything that takes away from Him as who your are is sinful.
Listening to music itself is not a sin, music of any kind. Worshipping music, by placing it on the high altar of who you show the world as either an identity or focusing your all on what the music says as your philosophy is grave and sinful.
And I admit, I was a goth kid since 1984-85 who went to see the old school bands and I dressed the part and walked the role, wore the makeup and the boots which were the coolest part of any outfit I must say, and I was in sin because my focus was on my look and attitude and not on Him. When I placed more emphasis on God and not myself I was able to clean myself up, yet still be the goth kid, but it was hard for me to differentiate for years. The adversary knows it is easy to make music your god and music has torn people to shreds and lose their faith. Its an easy tool we all admire and the adversary knows it. Please, for your sake, make God your master first and your music only a fraction of your devotion in your life.

I agree with those who posted above. God doesn't say any kind of music is a sin, though that's what a lot of people would label genres such as rap or rock. I think it's purely based on lyrical content. I listen to a lot of bands that aren't Christian groups as I just liked the style, but if the music is sexually explicit or has an abounding amount of profanity, I don't listen to it.
I was reading today in the Purpose Driven Life, and I have to agree with the point the author made that there isn't any genre of music that can be considered "Christian." For example, rap has a really bad reputation as being sexually explicit, but there are Christian rappers out there praising God with their work. It all depends on the purpose and lyrics.
Also, you can listen to Christian bands as well, and it can still be a sin if you place that music before God himself.

Liking music isn't a sin. The only way that could be sin is if you loved it to the point you worshiped it or something. Idolatry? Yeah, that's a sin.
Interest in something with not-Christ-Happy music/lyrics? What's wrong with interests?
There's an old song that says, "Be careful little ears what you hear" but I don't really agree with that.
I mean, I find God in almost everything in a positive light. Like books of the world's greatest genre, Fantasy. Piers Anthony (an agnostic author) writes books where the main character has to fight Satan and can't until they come to terms with the fact that he's the Father of Lies and Prince of Evil....
Check out Pier's Anthony's On a Pale Horse. It's about the Man who Murdered Death. It's a pretty amazing series.
