The Story. Long ago, dragons roamed throughout the mountains and forests. Then, one day, they disappeared. The people of Niffin came to believe that they had never existed, and came to think of them as legends. Unbeknownst to them, however, some dragons continued to cling to existence in the deep mountains, living among caves. One such dragon is Old Silverback, an ancient male determined to restore the species to its former glory. To this end, he searches throughout the caves that riddle the mountains for ancient nests so that he may collect the eggs and try to make them hatch. He avoids humans at all costs, although he has been spotted once or twice.
The first time he was spotted, it was by a young girl named Godar. She was on goat herding duty, up at Goat Camp, and was searching for a lost goat when she spotted him. Terrified, she avoided the area for weeks afterward, and never mentioned the incident at Goat Camp. Once she had returned to the safety of Niffin, however, she started to tell her story. No one believed her, which just made more adamant that she was right. The people of Niffin started to refer to the dragons as Godar's Folly, or Godar Dragons, always with a wink and a laugh. She no longer talks about them, but don't mistake her silence for acquiescence: they're out there, and she knows it.

The Tale.
Although Old Silverback's search is endless, he usually finds only one egg in each nest he finds. These eggs were most likely laid during times of famine, some of them abandoned for ages, completely overgrown with plantlife. Some eggs, hidden in caves, were the victims of cave-ins as the rocks shifted over time. They were crushed. Many hatchlings never saw daylight.
As for the hatchlings that survived, they never knew their parents. Many of them were clueless about the tragedies of ages past, oblivious to the fate of their mothers and fathers.
Some of the hatchlings' parents may have survived, but even so, families were seperated, sometimes for good. Years - in some cases decades - passed before Old Silverback came across the deserted nests, and its doubtful that the parents wouldn't have returned in all that time unless they were able.
The 'lean times' long ago... They caused the death of many dragons. Once the hills were full of dragons, but in these lonely times a dragon could travel for days without coming across a single face. The dragons cling to existence, deep in the mountains, but many are afraid to return to their homelands. Others don't know where to go, seperated from their age-old packs before their hatching. Old Silverback's personal mission is to repopulate the hills by hatching newly discovered eggs.
Old Silverback has tought his young charges one thing above all others: Do not trust the humans. Avoid them at all costs. Old Silverback's belief of this is due to the fact that the lean times were not hard simply because of famine. There was a plague. Dragons starved to death, too weak to hunt, and no dragons were available to help because they too, were weak. Some lingered on, eating the occasional meal when it was available, but most eventually succombed to the disease. Old Silverback and the rest don't know the cause of the plague, but Old Silverback believes that humans are responsible. His logic? There aren't many humans in the mountains: before the plague their were none at all, unless invited. The dragons own the mountains, and are the guardians of the hills. They don't know for sure who sent the plague. They don't know if they'll ever find out. But Old Silverback has determined that until the dragons regain their numbers and strength, it would be best to remain hidden, and not let the humans know of the dragons' existence.
Some dragons wish to attack the humans as vengence, but Old Silverback will not have it, keeping the hope that dragons and humans can live in peace someday, as they did long ago. He does not wish for any innocent lives to be taken. There was enough of that during the Plague.
The Mountain Dragons depend on each other during these times... They are each others support; their siblings; their family.
Recently, however, a new generation has begun. New families have been started. New packs are being formed. New traditions are being practiced. The dragons are surviving.
Someday... They will once again rule the mountains. And be more than just a legend for fools and lunatics.

Reunion. ( These facts are NOT known by the other dragons and will only be revealed in the fullness of time to certain dragons, maybe all of them, it is presently uncertain.)
Although most dragons are alone in this world, a few are lucky enough to have found family. For instance... Old Silverback and Khala. Shortly after Khala's hatching, Old Silverback took her aside and revealed to her that she, in fact, did have a surviving family member; a relative. Himself. Old Silverback is Khala's Grandfather.
They decided to keep it a secret from the others. Although it might have given the others hope of their own families being alive, Old Silverback did not want that hope to be false, nor did he want jealousy to arise when they heard that Khala had a true family. Also, he didn't want the information to 'fall into unsavory paws'.
Instead, they provide a family for the others. A family made up of other dragons that love them. They care for each other. They act as a family that could almost be considered - by some - to be closer than that of blood...

Northerners. Stuff about the Winter Event, Arbalète finding a mountain dragon, trek to the north and Kailani'e is dead.
To the Northern Dragons, the more Southern-based Mountain Dragons are a myth. If they had ever been real in the first place, they had all died out during the plagues. They were gone. Destroyed. Extinct. It was the belief commonly held among the younger Northern Dragons...
Until one day a teen named Arbalete - venturing South with her brother - stumbled upon one of the supposedly 'extinct' creatures. Trained as a scout and a hunter, she eluded the Mountain Dragon and returned to her brother. They quickly and quietly formulated a plan. Her brother, Jormungandr, moved Northeast to warn the rest of their pack; a pack of scouts and hunters called Tarragon. Meanwhile, Arbalete headed directly North to warn the rest of the Northern Dragons that their worst fears had come true; the Mountain Dragons had returned.
Without the gift of Storm Sight, however, Arbalete had no clue that she was walking into a storm. Due to the urgency of her message, she did not seek out a cave to take shelter in during the blizzard, but persevered. Distracted and blinded by snow, she didn't see the male Northern Dragon until she'd run right into him. Bryce managed to persuade her to follow him back to his cave, and they arrived just in time. Any longer and Arbalete might have frozen to death; her life and her warning vanishing in the face of flying ice and snow.
Always one for action, as soon as the storm ended Arbalète thanked Bryce, the male who had rescued her from the storm, and headed north. It was tough going; with every step Arbalete sank into the snow up to her belly. Hoping for an easier path, Arbalete made her way to a cluster of trees where the snow would be thinner. Unfortunately, the 'cluster' turned out to be a 'forest'. Unfamiliar with the territory and unable to see the sun, Arbalete soon became lost...
Arbalete eventually made her way out of the forest, and after weeks of traveling, not to mention getting stuck in a blizzard and lost in a forest, the thrill of adventure was beginning to wear thin.
