 Ismene sat on the shore of a lake, pulling her paw in and out of the water watching the ripples. The cool water kept her cool while the intense sun bore onto the lake's surface. Deciding that wading was not enough, she went deeper into the water. Noticing the colorful fish in the lake n** at her toes she began to splash rapidly to get rid of the pests.

 Gintoki splashed frantically in the water. He tried to call for help or at least attract some attention, but every time he opened his mouth, he only got more water into his mouth giving him even more trouble in the water. He realized that he shouldn't have been too excited at the sight of the lake on this hot day. His only thought was that someone would notice him flailing about in the water and help him.

After noticing the fish had scattered away, she noticed that the splashing noise she 'made' didn't stop. Huh? What's going on? she thought. Looking at the water quickly ripple, she spun around in the water to find out where it was coming from. She squinted when she saw something give off a glare splashing in the water. Hey! Its a shiny thing! .....And its moving! She thought astonished. Swimming closer to it she noticed the form of a pup drowning in the water.
Shocked, she yelled "I'm coming! Don't die on me yet!" And she swam faster to pick up the flailing pup.

Gintoki heard a voice off in the distance. He couldn't hear what it was saying, but he tried even harder to stay afloat so whoever it was could help him. He tried to yelp again, but the sound came out garbled because of the water.

Close enough to reach the pup, she took it by the scruff and swam ashore. She placed the pup onto the ground and patted its back to rid of any water in its lungs. "Are you okay?" She asked while she shook off excess water from her fur.

He spluttered and coughed and tried to catch his breath. He looked at the dragonfly. This was the first time he saw another dragonfly besides him and his father. "I-I'm okay." he mumbled while looking at the ground.

"Ah...that's good. Well anyway...who are you shiny, and what were you doing in the water?" She asked in a scolding tone. She looked up and down the tired pup and noticed his fur was mixed with scale-like patterns. What's with the scales? Is he a fish? She thought curiously.
Wondering if the scales would flake off, she prodded his side. "Dragonflies are not fish." She stated bluntly as she prodded him.

He tried to explain that it was hot today and he wanted to play in the cool water. The most he could say was, "Hot." while pointing at the sun and "Cold." while pointing at the lake.
He flinched as she started prodding him. "Ow!" he yelped. "Gintoki! Gintoki! Not fish!" he squealed.

"Ah." She responded straightforwardly. In all honesty she was a bit confused at the language of the pup. But, its a pup and usually a female dragonfly should be able to understand one. But Ismene was a rare case. At first she understood the pointing at the lake and the sun but after he squealed 'Gintoki' she was confused. "Gintoki? Is that your name?" She asked, ceasing the poking at the same time. Waiting for a response she also asked another question, "By the way Gintoki, if that's your name, Where's your mom?"

He straightened himself after she was done poking him. He nodded and pointed at himself. "Gintoki." Gintoki didn't understand what she meant by 'Mom'. He would have to ask his dad what a 'mom' was. What a funny word! So he stared at her for a moment and finally said, "Your name?"

Looking at Gintoki point at himself when he said his name, she understood. At first she expected an answer about his mother, but the blank stare she was given made her wonder what was up with Gintoki. " Do you have a mom?" she asked in response to the blankness.
Hearing him ask for her name, she responded,"My name? It's Ismene. It's nice to meet you.".

He cocked his head to the side. 'She said the same word again.' he thought. "What is a mom?" he asked curiously.
"Ismene..." he repeated. Saying her name tickled his tongue. He was learning some interesting words today! He found Ismene rather interesting. He started to wonder if all Dragonflies were this interesting.

'What's a mom!?' she thought in shock. This pup was becoming weirder and weirder to Ismene. "You don't know what a mom is? Hm....It's a dragonfly like me, She said pointing to herself. "But she always followed you since you were born."
Smiling at her name being mentioned, she remembered the reason she came to the lake other than to wade. She was supposed to fish for the 'pests' that she splashed away eariler. Mumbling to herself she forgot for a second Gintoki was there, until his shinyness reminded her. "Hey...are you..hungry?" Ismene asked hesitantly turning to him. Usually she would only feed herself but since she had company, she had to offer.

After Ismene explained to him what a 'mom' was, Gintoki understood a little more what it actually was. He realized maybe his dad was like a 'mom'. His dad was a dragonfly. Check. And his dad was always there. Another check. "Like Dad?"
"...No." he answered. But his stomach grumbled as he held it. "...Yes." he mumbled.

Ismene shook her head. "A dad and a mom are different things. A dad is a guy, like you." she said pointing to Gintoki. "A mom is a dragonfly like me. A girl" she said again pointing to herself. She tried to make it as simple as possible.
Hearing his stomach rumble she giggled. "Ok...lets go look for something in the forest. I don't want to see a repeat of several minutes ago." She said, thinking about the fiasco at the lake.
