“Come closer little cubs, and listen to this tale.” The old den mother shifted her thin, dappled body and braced her back against the wall of the dry cave.
“Life was not always as it is now, there was once a time when our great pride was divided. You see, no pride had ever taken in any but their own kind before, strong beasts fought and died for leadership. There were cunning plots, deceptions and murders. Faction pitted against faction, cat against cat, and all having to deal with the dangers outside the pride as well as within. This was a time of uncertainty, many who live now have much to regret from that time. Hush little ones…and let me take you back…to the dawn of the Midnight Pride…”

The Structure

The pride, although in its infancy was already a complicated series of groups, each having its own purpose and certain type of warrior--for all cats, large or small were warriors in those days.
Instead of one unquestioned leader (as the lions had tried to impose) there were several. Each of these cats lead a different faction; the hunters were stealth warriors, using the skills both learned in the pride and the abilities granted them by their bodies to track down and fetch food for the rest of the cats. There were the outriders, the scouts and defenders of the pride, these were usually cats with the highest combat abilities.
There were the den-watchers, who took care of every cub, no matter the type, or who it belonged to. These cats were chosen for their loyalty, integrity and devotion to the pride. Then, the healer and his or her apprentice who’s job it was to care for any injured cat within the pride, regardless of status or reputation.

The Plot

The pride was well structured even in those early days, yet greed and corruption are never far behind the paws of the just. Those who craved power began to sway the minds of other cats, winning over their loyalty and servitude with promises and false tales. There were lesser cats who plotted against the leaders, and leaders who plotted against other leaders. All this to bring the death of one of the greatest cats ever to grace the pride. His name was Kuros and it was he who had brought about the formation of the great pride. A lion among lions, with a heart and mind set only on justice. He was ambushed one night along with his mate, the panther Serria.
The pride wept as one that night, all but those responsible for the great king’s death. They were quickly found out however and banished into the wastelands beyond the plains.
This is where our story begins. After the death of the Outrider head Kuros, with the deciding of the new faction leader…

The Land

The pride lands consist of vast open plains, lush, ancient forests and tall rocky cliffs all colliding at one center point. The den sight is here, at this point, hidden on two sides by the forest and the cliffs and open to the wide, golden plains.
The dens are many, with one central den where the cubs are raised until 5 or six months, several birthing dens and one naturally carved den that connects to a series of tunnels leading to caves hidden in the cliffs. These caves are used for shelter and sometimes holding council when times are uncertain.

Character Page!

Name: Brindle
Species: Bengal Tiger
Age: 4
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: Leader
Disposition: Brindle is wise for her age, and most often calm but she can be a bit lofty when she feels she is talking to an inferior cat.
Appearance: Brindle is slender and somewhat small for a Bengal tiger, yet as a cat of the Pride she is formidable. Her paws are large for her body and her legs are slightly longer than those of a normal tiger. Her eyes look as though they have been cut from the purest jade but the most distinct thing about her is the way her black stripes blend and twist into one another. This makes them only visible as stripes from a short distance. From afar her coat looks almost one dull shade of brown. Despite this, the elegant white fur on her face and chest keep the stripes there in plain view, so she will never be taken for anything but a tiger.
Likes/dislikes: Brindle admires skill and intelligence, she promotes kind-heartedness and frowns upon greed or selfishness.
Skills: Hunting strategy, minor combat knowledge, strength
Loyalty to: The Pride
Back story: Brindle’s mother joined the pride with little brindle only one month old. The young tiger cub was quickly picked out as a potential hunter and trained accordingly by the Hunters’ leader of that time. Once she had completed her training the old leader stepped down freely, giving his position to the now accomplished Tigress.

Name: Raiden
Species: Liger (lion/tiger)
Age: 6
Faction: Outrider
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Brutal and cruel to those beneath him. Raiden is strong-willed and cunning, and will stop at nothing to gain supreme power over the pride. He is clever though, and takes care to hide his true nature most of the time.
Appearance: [x]
Likes/dislikes: Raiden enjoys making things suffer and toying with the minds of other cats. He dislikes cubs and young cats and those that try to control him.
Skills: Exceptional combat ability, his size and strength are great assets as well.
Loyalty to: Raiden is loyal only to himself
Back story: Raiden was orphaned at three months, he was found by a member of the pride and raised by the cat who eventually plotted Kurros’ death. Raiden escaped blame however and now lives in the pride to finish what his adoptive father started.

Name: Zephre
Species: White Lion
Age: 5
Faction: --
Position in faction: Healer
Disposition: Zephre is a very light-hearted individual who takes great pleasure in helping others. Despite his size he is extremely gentle and often spends his time about the dens with the cubs. He is not very bold, nor does he take much interest in the political workings of the pride. He is simple.
Appearance: Zephre’s mane is thick and full, making him look bigger than he actually is. It is a soft ash-grey and falls about his friendly face in a wild tangle. His eyes are covered with an ice-blue film as he is blind.
Likes/dislikes: Zephre loves his job as healer and is very fond of his young apprentice. He gets uncomfortable when there is unrest in the pride.
Skills: Extensive knowledge of healing plants and the methods in which they are applied.
Loyalty to: The pride
Back story: Zephre fell ill two years ago and nearly lost his life. By some miracle the old healer of that time managed to cure him despite not knowing what he had. The ordeal however left him blind. Because of his brilliant white coat and gentle nature he was neither suited to the hunter faction nor the outriders. The old healer took him under her wing and taught him everything she had learned. Now Zephre does his best as the new healer and works hard training his apprentice.

Name:
Calyn
Species: Panther/Lion
Age: 3
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: Second
Disposition: Quiet, usually calm. More cautious and distant now that her parents were killed.
Appearance: [x]
Likes/dislikes: Likes calm, running, rain. Dislikes thunder, chaos, being cooped up.
Skills: Hunter, fast runner, fairly good fighter.
Loyalty to: Pride, Leader
Back story: Her parents were Kurros and Serria, though she didn't abuse the result of the position. She was chosen to be a hunter, and trained. She went up fairly quickly through the ranks, being a 'natural'.

Name: Tami
Species: Leopard
Age: 2 1/2 (about 13 cat years)
Faction: Healer
Position in faction: Apprentice
Disposition: Calm, caring, soft-hearted. She's stealed herself to seeing pain, but she's learned to use it to her advantage to help the cat.
Appearance: [x]
Likes/dislikes: Likes helping, learning. Dislikes: pain, suffering.
Skills: quick learner, good healer.
Loyalty to: Pride
Back story: Found as a cub abandoned, her mother's corpse no too far away. Wild dogs, apparently. She was taken to the pride and raised as one of them, refusing to fight. So, as a last resort, she became an apprentice healer. To everyone's amazement, she was fairly good at it.

Name: Konya
Species: Panther
Age: 3
Faction: Den-watcher
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: She's very kind-hearted, gentle, and quiet most of the time especially to the cubs.
Appearance: Konya is pure black with dark gray spots on her fur, she has unusualy blue eyes and a slim body. She has a kind and harmless look to her. She can't be seen well at night.
Likes/dislikes: Konya likes kindheartedness and kindness, she doesn't like rudeness or selfishness.
Skills: Is stealthy and cunning
Loyalty to: To pride
Back story: Konya was born in the pride and has been loyal to it. She never had any hunting or fighting talents so she was made a den-watcher, since she made the cubs behave.

Name: Bianca
Species: White Tiger
Age: 4
Faction: Den-Watchers
Position in faction: Leader
Disposition: Playful and loving, of course having to be with children, but she is a dreamer and a thinker herself. She is exceptionally loyal to the Pride and the cubs and will risk her life for them.
Appearance: [x]
Likes/dislikes: Likes cubs, bathing, and snuggling. Dislikes fighting, morons, and Traitors.
Skills: Strong Fighter and Quick Thinker
Loyalty to: The Pride
Back story: Bianca grew up in the den and stayed there, being childish in nature and loving to the other cubs... her place was to be there. She wanted to branch out and be a outrider due to her great fighting skill, but her white shiny fur made it difficult to blend with surroundings. But, Bianca loved her job and has been at it since she was two as a general helper. As the years past, more help was needed in hunting and outriding because of the scare and less cubs were being born. The older cats went to help elsewhere and put Bianca in charge.

Name: Thela
Species: Jaguar
Age: 3 1/2
Faction: Outrider
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Thela has an aggressive attitude, though she often keeps quiet, especially if she respects the party she's speaking to. Her loyalty to the pack and to her leader is known, and she will fiercely defend those whom she cares about.
Appearance: Her main coat is a deep golden yellow, tinted slightly orange. Her black markings start as single dots towards her front, turning into black dot-rings surrounding slightly darker fur. She has yellow-brown eyes, and a surprisingly calm expression for her fierce attitude. She is larger than most female jaguars, with a very muscular and stocky form. [x]
Likes/dislikes: Thela enjoys swimming, climbing, and physical activities in general. She dislikes those who do not follow orders, and in general troublemakers.
Skills: Thela is a skilled fighter, with powerful blows. She also has great knowledge of fighting tactics for her age.
Loyalty to: The Pride, then Leader
Back story:Thela's family joined The Pride when she was naught but a cub. Raised in the pride, she was picked out to be trained as an outrider early on because of the constant fights she started in the den when little. Her parents died soon after she started training, motivating her further to protect the rest of her 'family,' the pride members.

Name: Armine
Species: Cheetah
Age: 7 Human years = 35 Cat years.
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Often cheery, and surprisingly so. He’s not getting any younger, but he still likes to prove the younger cats wrong in many different ways. The only time he is angered is when the pride as a whole is threatened by betrayal and when someone takes his food.
Appearance: [x]
Likes: Food, the Sun, proving the youngsters wrong, anything exciting.
Dislikes: Carrion, traitors, staying up late.
Skills: Experience, youthful strength, the cheetah’s speed.
Loyalty to: His leader, his pride, himself.
Back story: Armine had been a member of the hunters since he can remember. At this age, his memory gets a little foggy some days, which is both unfortunate and funny too. In his training days, Armine used to sneak away from his teacher and then play pranks on them and nearby cats. Armine was a terror as a kit, but now he’s a terror of a different sort.

Name: Kiros
Species: Puma/Panther
Age: Ruffly 25 in cat years 5 in human years
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: subordinate
Disposition: Kiros is very kind hearted but he can be angered easily, he tries to choose the most honorable action, and what would be best for the pride, in all his actions.
Appearance: Kiros has the look and body of Puma but has the black coat of a panther. His coat his not very thick but it is not realy thin either.
Likes/dislikes: He likes to hunt, often enjoying the Silence of it, he often finds joy in watching the cubs learn. He dislikes it when people speak ill of the late Kuros and often dislikes raidens actions but does not say anything. He doesn't like to think about his past so he remains in the now and thinks of the future only.
Skills: Kiros is a skilled hunter, but when the situation calls for it he is a formidable fighter. He is not highly intellegent but he is not incompetent in the least.
Loyalty to: The Pride
Back story: Kiros came to the pride when he was about 2 years of age (Human years) he wondered into the den out of the forest seemingly weak as if he had been in there for a long time. Unfortunately it was just him and he remembers nothing of his past in the forest.

Name: Miros
Species: Lynx
Age: 10 in human years
Faction: None
Position in faction: n/a
Disposition: Miros can be cold when he wants to be, it's mostly of his age though. Otherwise he can be like a father or grandfather figure to younger cats. He tends to take refuge in solitude though finding it more comfortable.
Appearance: Miros coat is completely grey with balck along the edges of his ears and around his eyes. He does have a few white hairs on his coat from his age though. and his eyes are moonlit yellow and have a black slits for pupils.
Likes/dislikes: He's fond of youg cats coming to him for advice or stories. He use to love to hunt but in his age he cant go as fast as his prey can. He hates all forms of betrayl and tends to hate the organization form of the pride.
Skills: Miros in his youth was a formidable fighter and hunter. Now his skills would include wisdom, tracking, keen eyes and a quick wit.
Loyalty to: Kurros
Back story: Miros was once an excellent hunter and was close to Kurros. When he was a cub his parents were leaders for certain factions of the pride, his mother was a hunter leader and his father was an outrider leader. When he was brought up he was trained to become an outrider but his passion was for hunting. His father decided then that he should become a hunter. So he trained for hunting and became the second in the hunter faction. The night that Kurros died Miros was there but was to late to save him. He then tracked down most of those who were responsible for the assasination. Though he could not find all of them, this became a great shame in his mind. So he left the pride and has been on his own ever since. His den and where abouts are known to the pride and he is often sought after for advice.

Name: Mira
Species: Clouded Leopard
Age: 4
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Mira is very outgoing and doesn't always take orders. On occasion she will run off on her own, to get away from the hierachy. She is kind and would rather be in the company of others than wander by herself. She has a very high tolerance but runs when she can't take any more. She loves to play and have fun and barley takes things seriously.
Appearance: [x] At the shoulder Mira is only three feet tall and has a three foot tail. She has four large fangs, each over two inches long. Her eyes are an amber color with a hint of green. Her paws are large in comparison to her body and equiped with long sharp claws.
Likes/dislikes: Mira has a fondness for trees and prowling throught the forest. She hates to see fighting between members of the pride and tends to be a peace keeper.
Skills: Climbing trees, hanging upside down from the trees useing her back feet, hunting small game on her own or working with others to bring down larger game.
Loyalty to: The pride, though her loyalty is growning and becoming more solid
Back story: Mira grew up with no siblings. When she was barely old enough to take care of herself her mother abondend her. From then on she roamed alone, searching for a place to fit in. The only scar she bares is on her front left leg. It runs in a jagged line from her elbow to her paw. During the time she roamed she formed a friendship with another leopard, only to have him turn on her when food was scarce. They fought and the battle left her limping away. She found the Midnight pack only a few weeks ago and was allowed to join. She became a hunter but still has a lot to learn in the ways of the pack.

Name: Sephire (Seph for short)
Species: Snow Leopard
Age: 4
Faction: Hunter
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Seph tends to be lazy or sarcastic; when he’s not hunting he often won’t lift a paw if he doesn’t have to. Out on the hunt however he seems like a completely different creature, swift and cunning, once he sets his sights on prey, he won’t quite till its been taken down. He always walks with a surprising grace, even for a feline; most account this to his unusually long tail.
Appearance: [x] [x] When not hunting he tends to have a sleepy eyed look about him
Likes/dislikes: He likes afternoon naps, long walks across the cliffs, the taste of fresh prey, and he loves the snow & rain. He dislikes unneeded use of energy, anyone that’s too hyper, and those that talk too much. Despite his dislike of hyperness, he has a soft spot for cubs that he tried to hide.
Skills: Quick and agile, as well as perfect balance (allows him to get to places most his size can’t), also cunning and precise when hunting.
Loyalty to: Seph holds no real loyalty to anyone.
Back story: Seph’s parents arrived on the pride’s just over four years ago during a drought in late summer. Starving, and close to giving birth, his mother was allowed in first, followed soon after her mate once he managed to find where she’d disappeared to. About a mouth later Seph was born. Assured that the child was safe and health, Seph’s father took off, and never returned. His mother died a few months later, her health having rapidly deteriorated since Seph’s birth. He blamed himself at first, but the healer at the time assured him that it was the fault of the starvation that had caused her health to be poor. Hearing this is what made Seph push to become a hunter, he wanted to make sure none die from starvation. He was allowed in, and has since been seen as an asset when prey in the forest and plains are scare because of his natural ability to hunt the allusive prey of the cliffs.

Name: Gado
Species: Lynx
Age: 8
Faction: Outrider
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Gado is a tough little hairball as some have put it. Gruff and not much for conversation, the look in his eyes and his body language speak enough for him as he sees it (many comment that he’d have no trouble if he was mute). Gado often seems to give off the air of a well experienced and wise warrior, tough as granite and sharp as any set of claws. Despite this he cares a great deal for the cubs, and secretly plans to become a Den-watcher once he feels he’s too old for fighting. He takes the shortness of his tail and comments about it very seriously.
Appearance: [x] [x] Gado's fur tends to be scruffy to say the least, bits of it sticking out here and there, as well as a patch thats missing on his left back leg. He also has a scar running across his left eye, though luckily his eye is still intact.
Likes/dislikes: Gado enjoys foggy mornings and the rain, though he says its because of combat related reasons. He also enjoys a good scuffle now and then, as well as listening to the dawn chorus of birds. He dislikes arrogance in all its forms.
Skills: A surprising amount of fighting ability and experience despite his small size. A tough and very fierce nature. Light on his feet.
Loyalty to: Once it was to his leader, now he’s not sure were his loyalties lie
Back story: Despite being one of the smaller cats, Gado was accepted into the Outrider’s. He lacked the raw strength of tigers and lions, but he made up for it with pure determination and a tough exterior. It was said he once won a fight just by digging his claws into an opponent and not letting go. He had a deep respect for Kuros, and acted as his second at one time, however he stepped down shortly before Kuros death feeling the need to reconnect with the subordinates. After Kuros fell, he chose to leave the pride for a time. He said he had some soul searching he needed to do, but in truth he’d planned to track down those responsible for Kuros death, and make them pay; however due to a severe lack of a sense of direction he never managed to actually find them. Admitting to his intentions upon his return he simply said “I’m a fighter, not a tracker”

Name: Lex
Species: African Lion
Age: 4
Faction: Outriders
Position in faction: Member
Disposition: Tends to be calm, but is still one of the fiercest warriors in the heat of battle.
Appearance: Lex looks like most African lions with the one exception that there is a large black stripe down his spine.
Likes/dislikes:
Likes- scouting for enemies, attacking with the group
Dislikes- being alone for long periods of time.
Skills: Scouting, distractions, and group attacks
Loyalty to: The leader of the faction
Back story: When he was young, Lex's parents were killed in a raid. To make sure that it doesn't happen to others, Lex joined the outriders.

Name: Etana ( meaning "strong one" )
Species: Black Leopard
Age: 3 and a 1/2
Faction: Outrider
Position in faction: Subordinate
Disposition: Etana is small, but fierce and determined. When she sets her heart on something, she WILL get it. A natural-born fighter, nothing will hold her back from attaining her deepest desires. She is fiercely loyal to the pride, but will not hesitate to give her strong opinions on things no matter her rank. While she can be sweet and compassionate to those she cares for, God help any cat that gets in her way. She has a younger sister, Dene, who is basically the other half of Etana's heart. Etana would do anything for her sister, and is extremely protective of her.
Appearance:Etana
Likes/dislikes: She likes nighttime, hiding, hunting, winning fights, and completing missions she has been given. She hates anyone or anything that is in her way, restraints of any kind, and cats who are full of themselves. She has limited patience for cubs, but so far, Dene is the only one who tugs on her heartstrings.
Skills: Stealth and a sharp wit, acute senses and intuition, drive
Loyalty to: Fiercely loyal to her pride and leader, and will gladly do what she is told along with whatever else she needs to do to defend the pride and the ones she loves. However, her allegiance to herself comes before all this, and she will fight orders that go against what she believes to be moral, right, or true.
Back story: Etana and her mother were very close, and when she was ready to begin life on her own, she chose a territory adjacent to her mother's. She would even visit from time to time, and even after her mother had given birth to Dene and and her brother, Zahran. Etana grew very close to her younger siblings, and spent many a sunny African day playing with them. On a fateful morning, Etana found her mother fighting with a rogue male, who had already slaughtered Zahran and had bitten Dene, his fangs closing around her right shoulder and going all the way through her flesh to the other side. Etana arrived in time to help her mother fight the male off, but her mother was badly injured. She soon died from infections in her wounds and loss of blood. Etana took it upon herself to take care of Dene, although she herself is young and inexperienced.

Name: Dene ( meaning "water lily" )
Species: Black leopard
Age: 4 months
Faction: Not sure yet
Position in faction: Not sure yet
Disposition: Dene is sweet and compassionate towards those around her, and is very intuitive to other's feelings. She can be easily frightened, but tries hard to overcome her fear and be more like her sister. Etana is like a goddess in Dene's eyes, and she wants to be just like her, though their personalities are vastly different.
Appearance: ( Etana and Dene: ) Dene
Likes/dislikes: She likes cuddling, playing, and being with her sister most of all. She doesn't like loud noises or violence, and is prone to panic attacks in which she relives her attack from the rogue male leopard.
Skills: Compassion, joyous energy that seems to spread to others around her
Loyalty to: She will be loyal to the pride, just like her sister, but she will be loyal to Etana above all else.
Back story: A month ago, Dene, her mother, and her brother were attacked by a rogue male leopard, and he nearly took her life. He severely injured her right shoulder, and she held it up close to her body to keep her weight off of it. It healed that way, and now she is a cripple. While her leg isn't growing quite as well as the others, it isn't as useless as Dene and Etana believe it to be. It still has muscle, but the muscles have tightened, resulting in a sharp pain whenever Dene tries to use the leg. With some sort of physical therapy, Dene could eventually overcome her limp as she continues to grow.

The night’s wind played a cool and soothing rhythm on the whiskers of a young tigress as she padded quietly back from the plains.
Her mission had just been to scout the new herds that fell into the pride lands on their spring migration. Now that that was finished, she lifted her nose to the air and turned for home.
Suddenly she froze. Something was not quite right. With her ears pricked forward she listened with all her might, straining to hear past the crickets at her feet or the wind in the grass. Growls. Growls could be heard, and they were from her own pride.

Wasting no more time Brindle dove forward, leaving all stealth and caution behind her. It did not matter now, not with such an event upon her pride. The battle for the new outrider leader, would soon begin.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 15, 2008 11:13 am

Calyn raced towards the pride, the herd she'd been following forgotten. They could get by without it for now. She looked to the side angling herself to meet Brindle. "It's for whoever's to replace them, isn't it?" she asked, her ears angled back close to her head at the mention of her parents. She wanted the position to stay open longer, but she knew it wasn't possible. In her mind Kurros was the leader of the Outriders, not anyone else.

"It's starting again. More fighting." Tami spoke softly, looking up to Zephre. She was tired of it, especially since they'd just had the coup against Kurros and Serria. So much fighting, pain... She'd been constantly going out to find more herbs, more plants and other things to help the cats.

Konya was laying in the den trying to calm the cubs. "Hush now little ones it's ok." She had to keep pulling them back to were she was. "Settle down now every thing's going to be fine." She was purring slightly and cleaning some of them, trying to be convincing.
PostPosted: Tue Jul 15, 2008 6:39 pm

Brindle did not hide the relief she felt as her second came bounding up beside her. She slowed a little, giving Calyn time to match her pace.
"You should be careful." She cautioned. "There may still be those in the pride who wish you harm." They neared the edge of the den sight and Brindle slunk into the thick grass, hiding herself from view. "But don't worry," she added with a quick smile, "They'll need to get through me first."
She could see them now, a congregation of large cats moving against the backdrop of the tall red stone cliffs. Each looked formidable, she only wished she knew their minds and hearts. Nothing filled her with more pride than leading her cats alongside Kurros. How different would it be now?

Zephre sighed, "It would appear so." He turned his sightless eyes in the direction of the cliffs. The many scents caught in his delicate nose and he wrinkled it thoughtfully. "You can almost smell the tension." He stood up slowly, stretching his massive limbs before starting for the den sight.
"We'll stay by the dens until this is settled, no doubt there will be a few who need our help before day breaks." He paused and looked back at his young apprentice. "You're good with cubs right?"

Raiden waited patiently in the shadows, watching as one by one the other cats appeared. He would not be fighting today he decided, but he would watch and wait...and pick his new allies with the utmost care. The others were too hasty, they had killed Kurros with brute force and thought nothing of the consequences it seemed. No matter. This time it would be different.

Calyn nodded. "I know, and I will. And, thanks." she smiled at the other cat, relieved she wouldn't be completly alone. She immediatly dropped lower, staying hidden and blending in with the long grass. Appearance-wise, she had the best of both species. The coloration of a lion, yet the bodyshape more like that of a panther. It was perfect, when she was in the plains. She crept closer, her tail twitching nervously. She knew some were expecting her to be there, to follow in their footsteps. But did they not understand that she didn't want it? That she'd be miserable and reminded of what happened everyday? She was a huntress, not a fighter. Some just hadn't learned yet.

"You want me to go stay with them?" Dani guessed, nodding. He'd figured out by now when she was. "And yes I'm good with them, for the most part." she added.

"Most part?" Zephre pricked a an ear quizzically, then chuckled. "Cubs aren't as silly as many cats think, they can sense what is going on just as easily as we can. They are probably very afraid."
A soft rustling in the air made him turn. "They are not alone in sensing something. Look Tami." In the distance several black shadows wheeled out of the sky. Even on this moonless night vultures gathered, they knew as well there would be bloodshed.

Brindle remained where she was. "I suppose we both might be expected there." She said quietly. Sometimes it slipped her mind that she actually lead the hunters, and therefore would be wanted at the choosing of the new outrider head.
"I hate playing the official, sometimes I--" A soft noise behind her made her freeze. Her ears flattened against her head and she motioned for Calyn to help her surround the newcomer. The wind had picked up, whisking his scent away from her nose, she had no way of telling who it was.

"I tend to get annoyed at them too easily." Tami looked up, her ears laying flat against her back. "Do you want me to go to them then?" she asked, inching closer to him. She hated the birds, remembering them from when she was a cub. She didn't even remember her mother, only the vultures circling, drawing closer and closer to her, waiting for her to die.

Calyn froze as well, barely moving as she slowly crept away circling around to the other side of him. She let the wind rustling the grass hide any sounds she made, waiting for Brindle to move before she did anything.

"We shall both go." Zephre said finally before pressing onward. The grass was very tall where they walked, it tickled his belly and braided fresh dew through his mane. Above them the clouds rolled across the sky, casting everything in almost complete darkness. Zephre could smell the thick wet air that clung to the wind. It spoke softly of rain.

It was so frustratingly dark! Brindle couldn't see a foot in front of her paws, and the fact she could not get his scent was putting her on edge. Her ears pricked suddenly. There were two strangers, not just one...and they were almost upon them. Brindle crouched, letting them come closer still. Since Kurros' death the young tigress had been seeing traitor and assassin in almost every cat in the pride. The great leader's death proved that none of them were safe and caution seemed to be her best ally.
Her muscles tensed, then she sprang. Claws tucked safely away she brought her paws in front of her and down towards the back of the unknown cat. There was a flash of spots before her eyes as, too late she realized that it was Tami. She tried to stop but it was useless and with a yelp she bowled straight into the young apprentice.

Raiden twitched his tail impatiently, where were the scouts he had sent?
Even though he had no power in the pride officially, there were still those willing to serve him. A soft hissing of grass told him of someone behind him. The thick sickening smell of hyena blood told him who they were.
"Ah, welcome back." He turned his head inconspicuously and caught sight of two black shapes that had materialized out of the darkness. The blood matted their coats and made their pelts indistinguishable, it also masked their scent so they could not be identified. It had been Raiden's idea.
"Sir, we've found Kurros' daughter."
"For the first time tonight it would seem," he looked up into the sky, it was black as pitch. "Wonderful night though, isn't it? I think we'll move ahead a little early."
Raiden did not need to see the uneasiness on their faces. "But sir, she is with the Hunting leader."
"Brindle will always be there!" He hissed, "What have I been training you for? There are two of you aren't there? Besides, she would need to 'disappear' as well eventually." Raiden turned to them, his eyes cold and darker than the night sky. "Kill them both."

Bianca growled at the den opening, standing on a large rock overseeeing what was outside. 'More senseless conflict,' she sighed to herself while keeping watch. Her fur rustled as slight dampness seemed to come over it. 'And rain coming as well? Someone is sure to get hurt.'

Bianca stood there though. In past conflicts, a angry female whom lost to another in a position stunk into the den and murder the other females cubs whom had been merely newborns. She had only been a child then herself. When younger, Bianca could not begin to believe why someone would do that, but as years past she learned the ways of their society; both the good and the bad.

Quietly she sat, digging her claws into the dirt.

Tami went after him, staying close and watching the vultures nervously. Then something was pouncing on her. She gave a startled yelp, flipping over onto her back as she was knocked over. She scrambled to her feet, ears laid back against her head as she crouched down low, relaxing as soon as she realized it was Brindle. "Don't do that!" she scolded, hiding her fear. As unreasonable as it was, she was deathly afraid of the vultures. And because of that, she'd though it was one coming to kill and eat her. No matter how many times it was explained to her that they don't kill, she still didn't loose her fear of the birds.

Calyn leaped, twisting out of the path and landing on her feet beside Zephre. "Brindle, we attacked our healers..." she said dryly, sighing, relieved. "What're you two doing out here anyway?" she asked, looking to Zephre.
