Main Ingredient(s): Firefly
Original Spell: A spell that was supposed to banish the will-o'-the-wisps [wisps] that littered a swampy area, allowing a traveling party to move on without being misled.
What went wrong: One of the traveler's horses was startled by a straying wisp and bolted, crashing into the sorcerer who was casting the banishment who in turn fell back and shattered the bottle that was holding the wisps which were being turned into fireflies and mingling with the real fireflies, a key ingredient of the spell. While most of the former wisps changed back to their original shapes and the fireflies scattered, a small wisp and a lone firefly were trapped beneath a piece of the jar's glass and the magic tainted sand from the broken circle

Full Story:
It was a routine patrol, done more for the sake of soothing minds than fending off actual dangers. But something about this one was deeply off.

"Which of you had the map?" came the fearsome snarl as their General rotated his horse around, eyes sharp and glaring, but very few of the men were fazed by the look, most of them merely continued to peer around in confusion. This couldn't be right-

"You! Ruairi! You had the map didn't you?"

"I still have the map," came the sharp response as the man in question looked up, adding a belated "Sir," before looking back to the map in question.

"It doesn't make sense," the man next to him breathed, eyes darting from the page to the area around them. According to the parchment this area was supposed to be a field, the landmarks nearby matched up nicely with both the paper and the memories of those who had been here before, so why, in heavens name, was there a swamp here instead?

"Well, the rains were particularly hard this year," ventured one man as he fidgeted unhappily in his seat, but the explanation was weak. This situation stunk of outsider influence, but what use did a swamp hold to the other Kingdoms?

"Rain, no matter how heavy, can't create a swamp. Not this quickly."

"Of course they could!"

"Stop beating around the bush! You know this had to be something done by thos-"

"Enough!" the General snapped, this time gaining the full attention of his company, "whatever or whoever may or may not have done this is none of our current concern. This is merely a swamp, a swamp in a place where there was no swamp before, yes, but still, it is just a swamp." Sharp eyes surveyed his men, letting the words sink in. "Now I'm quite unsure about the rest of you but I would like to finish this patrol, find any real danger and eliminate it, then get back to Se'niul."

A few murmurs of agreement rippled through the company and those who had hopped off their horses approached the beasts again. Said horses whinnied softly before abruptly giving off sharp cries of alarm and bolted towards the swamp where they were quickly enveloped by the lingering fog, leaving their riders baffled in their wake. Quickly regaining their senses the men began to call and whistle for their suddenly lost rides.

"Well, if any of you had any lingering doubts about crossing this swamp I hope you've forgotten them," the General commented after a moment, "after all horses rarely rush into danger without a rider making them," a sharp snort accompanied the statement as the beasts reappeared, apparently having heard the calls of their masters and looking no worse for the wear for their brief escape attempt.

"I wonder what scared them," one man asked, fondly patting his black steed, grumbling when he realized that the bit seemed to have been wrenched off, "lookit this!" He called to the others as he swung into his saddle, grumbling as he noted his bags were gone as well, "gone! All of it! I bet-" the sentence was cut off as a sharp exclamation of alarm wrenched itself from the man's throat as the steed beneath him reared up suddenly, a triumphant whinny escaping from its unrestrained mouth, rising above the cry of the man, before it raced off towards the water, followed momentarily by several of the other horses.

The men tried to throw themselves from the horses but found their efforts to be in vain, as they were seemingly glued to their steeds.

It was like some sort of cue. Chaos erupted around the group, the fog appeared to roll inwards, engulfing them and preventing them from seeing one another.

For a moment everything was silent then screams began to puncture the fog as men found themselves being dragged towards the water. Swords flew, blood splattered, cries littered the air for several minutes and then everything was silent again.

A tree on the fringe of the swamp stirred slightly and a woman's form dropped out of it, landing neaty on the water. The fog immediately parted before her feet, dissipating as if it'd never been. One of the kelpies trotted towards her and a small, cold smile drifted across her lips as she stroked its muzzle.

"How wonderful..." she commented airily, eyes drifting over the swamp, "all lined up in neat little rows. Soldiers at their best."

A knife hung loosely in her hand and with ease she flipped it around and moved towards the submerged men. Slowly, metholodically, she cut into each of their chests in turn, removing the hearts and gathering them in her shirt as she moved inwards, heading towards the center of the swamp. Occasionally she would pause as she surveyed one or more of the men, sometimes smiling, sometimes letting out a small melodic laugh at those who seemed to still be alive. As she worked she hummed to herself, never ceasing save when she placed the organs in the center of the swamp and moved on to the other lines. Before long the water was stained with red and she was placing the last of the hearts in the pile and wiping her stained hands on the hem of her dress.

She surveyed the pile with a nod of satisfaction and moved away, motioning for her kelpies to follow her. Once situated again on the grass of the once field she spread her arms. Her mouth opened and she let a note soar into the air, echoing again and again, seemingly gaining volume as the moments ticked by. The center of the swamp, along with the pile of hearts, began to glow, gaining in strength and seemingly spreading out, curving and shifting over the water's surface, diving beneath and connecting to the dead soldiers.

Her voice's volume and the glow's intensity increased steadily for minutes, and then, all at once, it ceased. The woman's jaw snapped shut with the tiniest of clicks.

She didn't seem to be short of breath, nor hindered by the sudden change in lighting. Her eyes were locked on the center of the swamp, watching as the mass writhed and wriggled, slowly but surely sinking downwards until the final tip disappeared.

Tiny lights slowly flickered into being, one over each of the soldier's bodies, as the soldiers themselves seemed to melt into the sediment of the swamp. With them went the red wash the water had acquired.

The woman's eyes didn't once flicker from where they were fixed, not even as the tiny wisps began to shift and move, almost appearing confused. The crest of something poked out of the water, followed by a clawed, arm like appendage, then another. They appeared to press down upon the water, pulling the remainder of its form up and out.

The woman turned and quickly dropped a sheet of parchment to the ground then dashed out across the water towards the being.

Moments later there was no sign of life anywhere about the swamp. No kelpies, no horses, no soldiers, no woman, nothing to say that anything had happened save for the lingering lights that flickered about and the fog that steadily crept back onto the water.

A note would be found several days later, upon it was printed 'I have done my part, the rest is up to you. Barriers have been removed, and I have obtained what I wanted. We will not be seeing each other again. Goodbye.'

--

It'd been decades since the appearance of the swamp, an event which had marked the beginning of larger and fiercer things. The swamp itself had always been a problem. Its thick fog never seemed to abate itself and the wisps which littered its waters would flit about travelers, constantly leading people astray. Many never came back. Avoiding the swamp was annoying, as it had grown steadily over the years, encompassing the area and making it nearly a day's journey around the very edge.

But this band of traveler's was determined to stop all the nonsense, once and for all.

The circle had been laid; the head mage was in place. The group itself had gone silent, watching as the wisps flickered about in front of them.

With a deep breath the mage, a woman named Lilith, opened the jar. It had been previously spelled to keep the fireflies which were currently crawling about within it inside while still admitting their quarry. Letting out her breath she began to chant, her voice increasing steadily in volume.

The wisps all paused in their flickering movement and slowly, but surely, began to gravitate towards her, dipping down into the jar. As soon as they entered their form flickered, gaining substance and form as fireflies.

All had been going well until one of the few wisps which seemed to actively be fighting the spell, flickering near then away again and again, slid towards one of the horses. The beast tensed then let out a whinny of alarm and charged away from its rider in panic at the sudden light.

Lilith barely had time to glance over and gasp as she was thrown to the side by the rampaging horse. She landed heavily on her side, breaking the circle and smashing the jars. Fireflies and wisps alike fled, the later changing back to their normal form. Save for two small beings, a firefly and a wisp that was struggling to return to its original form, which were unable to escape. The sand from the circle weighed heavily on the shard of glass which had trapped them and filled in the cracks, preventing escape.

The remnants of magic buzzed, the firefly and wisp flickered, faster and faster, until suddenly they were glowing in unison.

Lilith picked herself up, helped by several of the travelers, many of which were berating the man who the horse belonged to. The woman's eyes flickered over, catching sight of the flickering lights. She held up a hand and looked over, uttering a quiet, "silence," which had the band shutting up immediately. They followed her line of sight, watching as the binary lights slowly increased in intensity until it seemed there was only one.

Suddenly there was a great crack, the echo of thousands of voices and sounds, all contained in a moment of deafening noise.

Many of the traveler's clasped their hands to their ears, but Lilith blinked rapidly, adjusting her eyes to the sudden lack of light.

A small sniffle broke the near silence and Lilith gasped, "a child!" she exclaimed.

"A what?" "Where?" "Oh gods!" "What is it?" "What should we do?"

Lilith ignored them and strode over, gently picking up the sniffling infant with her good arm. A pair of squinting emerald eyes peered up into hers and four tiny limbs bat the air, accompanied by the tiny flutter of wings. "A baby boy..." the mage murmured in awe.

With a heavy sigh she turned her eyes back to the travelers, who were eying the babe warily, there was no home for the child here.

"I believe I must go take care of this, there is nothing more I can do for you at this time. The spell is ruined and to try again could be disastrous. I suggest you begin your journey around the marshes. Safe travels," and without another word the woman summoned up a small portal. There was only one place she could think of to bring the child, to a woman she'd met once in passing. A woman who owned an adoption home where children born from mishaps could find places to call home. The woman's name was Maggie; hopefully she would be able to find a safe haven for the child in her arms.

Markings: Two darkbrown arcs on either side of his eyes, one smaller than the other, darbrown markings on feet and hands...
Taste: ???
Power(s): ???
Normal Attire: Zee image at right is more Reid in pjs, though he is quite fond of layered clothing, striped shirts, and warm scarves/pants for winter. Earthy, warm tones seem to be preferred, with the occassional flitin to the darker, cooler side of the spectrum. Truthfully as long as it doens't restrict his movement he's a happy Mishap.
Music Prefrance: Intrumental music, espically if it manages to carry a lot of emotion, is probably Reid's favorite genre, though he will, admittedly, listen to just about anything.
Likes: Sound, sleeping during the day, friends, music, making music/sounds, playing, his piano, pots [>D], the dragon plush army, dancing, the air vents >D...
Dislikes: Harsh tones, yelling, his friends/family sad or in pain, being tiny >Personality: Reid is generally a friendly, optimistic and happy go lucky sort of kid with a love of music. He tends to wear his emotions on his sleeves and has no problem showing his enthusiam and possibly his anger, though that's yet to be really seen. It takes a lot to get him angry but he will if provoked enough. He's begun to develope a bit of a growing stubborn streak, espically when it comes to his loyalties.
Since growing, in age though shrinking in height, his determination and stubbornness has increased sharply, particularily when it comes to learning how to use his alignment.

User Image[You traded in your wings for everything freedom brings.]
Name: Aeon "Chao" Luaier
Nickname: Aemu
Species: Heanzian
Age: 16
Physical Appearence:
Personality: -to be worked upon-
History: Aeon herself is very secretive of her past pre-Barton move. She arrived in Barton one day with nothing but a backpack full of odds and ends and the clothing on her back, calling herself "Chao". She bought an appartment for herself as well as a plot of land with a delapitated house near the forest by selling off many of the things she had. For quite some time she didn't venture into the mainstream of Gaia, mostly keeping herself busy by getting odd jobs (often fixing things about her apartment complex or walking various creatures) or going to school. At some point her twin, Rico, showed up and her old friend Sin, managed to find them. Between the three of them the old house was transformed into a comfortable home where Rico and Chao now live. Neither talk about their pasts often, save in the seculsion of their own home or when visiting their parents, and Sin is the only other one who seems to know anything.
Since the completion of the house Chao has become more involved in the community of Gaia to the point of making friends and, seemingly consequencely, finding herself the guardian of several wards.

Extended History: [spoilerific]In all fact Chao could be considered a 'convict' hiding in Gaia. When she and her twin, Rico were born, Aeon had a small pair of downy white wings spreading from her back whereas Rico had nubby horns pressing out just above his forehead. While horns are a fairly common Heanzian trait Chao's wings made her the first of their kind to show these traits in some immeasurable amount of years. As He'ancele is very much a war inspired country/continent, seeking to someday unite a world empire under its banner, then to extend it's hold over more worlds, its leaders took this as a sign from higher Powers that they were destined to do so. The government came for the two, moreso Aeon than Rico, when the twins were 7. Both refused.

The next year their family was broken up when a group of men came for the two by force. Aeon was forced out the door by her mother and ran off. She met up with a rebel group and joined up with them. At that point she lost all contact with her brother and family. The young girl was quickly trained in piloting and was primarily a messanger/sniper but ended up in close range combat anyway, accounting for many of her quirks.

She spent the next four years piloting, was shot down several times, narrowly escaping until, finally, she was captured. After swiftly being sentanced to death the rebel's came for her once more, barely saving her from certain death via a beating by the high ranking guards. Unluckily she was thrust into a river and went over a waterfall, nearly dying in the process and is/was presumed dead by most of He'ancele.

What happened next is a mystery as somehow the pre-teen ended up in another world at Erasin's house. She stayed there for several months before leaving for new worlds and seeking someone who could hide her wings. It was some time before she came to Gaia, wingless and often suffering from back pain. She took on an old nickname for her new identity and has been happily living in Gaia ever since.

*Note: Chao will not tell her real name to anyone for her own reasons, only her family, and possible Sin, knows it. This is why, when she is in the exclussive company of her family, she will be refered to as Aeon but with anyone else she's Chao. Please refer to her as Chao.

User ImageName: Rico Luaier
Species: Heanzian
Age: 16
Personality: -to be worked upon-
History: For whatever the reason one day Rico just showed up on the doorstep to Chao's apartment. As with his sister his past is unknown. It's possible he originated from some remote corner of gaia is possible, but seems unlikely. He has a habit of dissapearing though, supposedly because of his line of work.

Name: Aido Luaier
Nickname: Aii, Ai-Ai...
Species: Tall Tale/Shadow Mancer
Age: Likely Story [aprox. 19 or so]
Physical Appearence:
Personality: -to be worked upon-
History: Aido was Chao's first ward/child. Ever. Having found her good friend, Huni's, Stationary Shop some time prior the teen was visiting, intent on buying some stationay when the door to the Study locked her in. A question appeared in the Tome and, on a whim, Chao answered it. After nearly being engulfed by shadows the woman found herself unharmed, but with a little girl staring up at her.

A wanderer/explorer by nature Aido has a tendancy to wander off, not returning for hours on end. She's a kind, albeit clumsy, soul and tends to get hurt alot. She cares about the well being of others more than herself, actually finding it quite difficult to tell other people about her problems, fearing disbelief and being a burden.

Name: Namin (?)
Nickname: Nima
Species: Shapeshifter/Cursed Being/????
Age: She's not telling.
Physical Appearence: Nima's often chosen forms include ermines and snowy owls.
Personality: Scarcastic, very cynical, Nima's less than happy about finding herself being bonded to Reid and has no problem displaying that displeasure. Still, she's stuck with him, at least until he dies a death she can't prevent and seems to be developing a vague sort of affection for him.
History: No one, not even Nima herself, really knows how she ended up cursed or who cursed her. Her first memory was of waking up in ermine skin in the forest near Chao's house, where she stayed and hunted and lived until Reid ran into her after his miscast. Now she's stuck, bonded to Reid because he knew her cursed name, until he dies a death she's unable to prevent or the one who originally cursed her removes the curse.
