I have been having a lot of problems with depression. I am in my 3rd week of sophomore year and it started half way through sophomore year. I've taken about a dozen online screening tests most of the time on a scale of 1-10. One being mild and 10 being extreme I usualy get about a 8 or a 9.

My symptons
-Random guilt
-Feeling worthless/ hopeless
-Unable to concentrate (I will get randomly get up when I am doing something and I won't know why)
-Thoughts of suicide
-Thinking of different ways to kill yourself
-Unusual sleep pattern
-Fatigue
-Crying spells
-Don't enjoy things that you used to.

Anyway after the second week I tryed to talk to my mom (And I told her /everything/) about this and she made some lip service about getting me a therapist...Another two weeks, I bring it up again. Same answer. Over the summer I went onto WebMD and got a handful of therapists names and emailed them to my mom. I waited three days, (I was in KY) then I called her and she said she hadn't had enough time to look at them. Next day she said she did and that over the weekend when I got back to Chicago we'd look over them togethor. That was in August. We never talked over the weekend. And I don't know what to do short of ODing on a bunch of pills to get her to help me.

Well, it definitely sounds as though you're depressed. Depression is an odd thing, as most of the time it's chemically caused. What you need to do is see a doctor (not a psychicatrist or psychologist) and look into a seratonin-uptake inhibitor. Seratonin is a chemical that triggers responses in your brain, and sometimes the uptake receptors are a bit too greedy, which leaves your brain with less seratonin. Uptake inhibitors do what their name suggests: they inhibit your brain from taking the seratonin back, leaving you with proper levels. Seratonin is closely linked with mood, so if you lack it, your mood will drop, leaving you depressed.

Anyway, that's your best bet. They'll probably put you on Lexapro or Celexa, but if the doctors view it as more serious, they may go with Paxil or Prozac. Try them out for at least a few weeks and see how they go. Remember, if one doesn't work, try another. Try at least three before jumping to the "the drugs don't work man!"

Therapy is good for depression if SUIs don't work. Expect a long and hard journey in that route.

Don't worry. You can always call your doctor yourself, schedule an appoint, and say "look mom, I have an appointment at this time. Give me your insurance card and I'll do the rest." Once you have the perscription, that's all you need. Now, the problem lies in if you don't have insurance. If that's the case, go to the school psychologist and tell them that you're depressed and your mom won't take you to a doctor about it.

Do you know if there is a particular reason for the depression? Or did it just start for no clear reason?

Do you know what could have brought about this depression?

I am not realy sure. I'd always been okay and maybe not happy but I don't know how it turned into the more serious symptoms I have.

Go to your doctor yourself and get a referral. Tell your mom about it and just ask her if she can take you there if you need a way there. Or maybe take the bus or a taxi. Ask a friend's mum to drive you.
