Fellow readers! Are any of you, like me, tired of otherwise wonderful books being filled with useless and very descriptive smut? Well, here is the place to discuss it and say why you don't like it, as some have different reasons then others. I happen to be a writer, by the way, and I want to know this for personal reasons.

I don't like graphic sex scenes most of the time. Sometimes they don't bother me, but usually I can live without reading them. I'd rather read it as euphemisms.

I'm not a big fan of random smut in books but if the author feels it necessary to insert such things into the story I hope that there is a purpose to it other than to be smutty. There are instances where the description of such scenes can actually be an important part of the plot. Maybe the character is being raped and this becomes the motivation for some future course of action that impacts the rest of the characters.
Speaking as a writer I think that if smut is to be included it should advance the story or the characters in some way that could not have been accomplished otherwise. If you just want to write smutty books don't have them published as a real book, go work for Harlequine or something. 3nodding

I don't mind it, as long as it is tasteful and has something to do with the story. As in Thinner, Billy Haleck's wife gives him a, um, hj while he's driving, he hits a gypsy woman and then the old gypsy man puts a curse on him.

Most times smut could be left out, but if the author finds it absolutely vital that it be in their book, then whatever. However, books filled with random smut is just an excuse for the writer to endulge in their own fantasies since they have sad sex lives. biggrin No, I don't know. Random smut is just a dumb way of trying to get attention.

Depends upon the book. If it fits with the overall feel of the book, fine If ir stands out like something the editor / writer jammed in there to "jazz things up" then no. It's all about the feel and the flow, not having a graphic sex scene in say, an Ann Rice novel would be like having one in a Marion Zimmer-Bradley book. weird either way

key word being "random" yes, I think random smut is completely distasteful and should not be written in books. Tasteful, impostant smut however, is perfectly fine with me. Again, key word being "random". If it's a major action scene, then suddenly that scene is over and a new chapter starts out with the two heroes starting off a completely pointless high-energy sex scene and then having a ciggy afterwords, that's pathetic and stupid. Otherwise, I like the smut ninja

I don't like sex scenes. Romance in novels is great, but not when it goes past a certain line.

It all depends on the book.

im gonna say that, if i want smut, ill read a romance novel. if not then i rather dislike huge paragraphs of descriptive smut, if its mentioned i don't mind, as long as it isnb't the center of attention.

I don't like smut. But I don't mind that much. If its really graphic, I'll skip or skim it quickly. If sex is implied but not described, I don't mind.

Not all books containing sexual scenes are "Smut". It all depends on your author. Some make it just whore-ish. Others can make it works of art. I'm not trying to persuade people, but, it can make good drama in some books. Well. sorta. That action (not going into detail about it) yes, but I guess as a young-adult, I like some of my books having some action.
But it depends on the author and whether or not you like their work.

I am with Kiyae on this one. I enjoy a little smut if it is part of the story. Random smut or "let's make this book rated R " smut is not for me. I am not much of a romance reader, but a lot of other books have story lines where things happen. But I want it to be part of the story, not just graphic sex. Plus, I little goes a long way, and a lot is too much. wink
