Bittersweet sorrow shone through the mare's eyes as her lavender gaze swept over the lush meadow.
Fresh spring grass, vibrant in its youth, flowed over rolling hills. Delicate flowers of every hue imaginable speckled the lime-green blades with color, the longer-stemmed daffodils swaying in the gentle breeze. Great fruit-bearing trees with twisting limbs that reached up to the heavens dotted the horizon. Beauty radiated from every square inch of land.
There had once been a time when such sights had filled her heart with joy, causing her to smile blissfully and sigh with pleasure. Now... She did not see the vibrant grass and delicate flowers as the promise of new life- she saw it as the foreshadowing of dried, brittle, cracked brown weeds. The twisted bark that housed all manner of small woodland creatures and provided a means of support for the emerald leaves above meant nothing to her- it was just wood. The clear blue sky, void of all clouds, was just that- a sky, nothing more.
She spared a single moment to take in the meadow's supposed beauty, and then turned away, her heart heavy.
As she moved gracefully towards the forest's edge, a flickering image formed in her mind. That of a stallion that shone like sun-kissed earth, with tendrils of silken ebony hair that fell limply against a well-muscled neck.
She could still appreciate beauty... just... not that of nature.

It was a day of solemn contemplations for the large stallion, as dulled cerulean hues swept over the passing terrain below as he glided through the cloudless skies.
The world seemed a bit dimmer lately, his hooves a bit heaver when he wandered through the tall grasses of the fields below, his gaze always focused on the earth beneath him, rather than the horizon above him. He had always been this way, save for being in the presence of a single friend of his- though he was still getting used to referring to her as such.
Kureno was a solitary soul- he had always been that way, since his mother was so distant, his father who-knows-where, and any siblings to speak of- if he even had any- vanished to the far corners of the earth, for all he knew. A grey dappled mare, however, had been a brief glimpse into the light of an existence that he had never considered.
Friends were a hindrance, and he'd always thought of them as such... but he was beginning to question if perhaps there was more to it than he had thought. Perhaps companionship wasn't so overrated, and perhaps it wouldn't always lead to hurt in the end. She seemed to be trustworthy enough.
A soft sigh befell his mouth as he raised himself slightly higher upon the winds with a single powerful flap of his obsidian wings, lifting his head enough to enjoy the feel of a gentle breeze through his ruffled forelocks.
His shadow passed a smaller form beneath, although he missed it completely, too engrossed in his thoughts to notice the silver spotted coat of the object of his thoughts.

A shadow passed overhead.
Her lavender gaze flicked upwards without the slightest bit of urgency, a brief flicker of curiousity awakening in her dormant thoughts. The shadow had been too large for it to have belonged to a bird- too evenly distributed to be a cloud.
Far off in the distance, his hazy form blurred by sunlight, flew the last being that could stir some semblance of warmth in her guarded heart.
Eyes shining with keen interest, she watched as the form of Kureno moved further into the distance, each passing second bringing another stroke of his powerful ebony wings.
... Further and further away.
The light in her eyes shriveled and died- surely he must have seen her plodding along. He had chosen to move on without so much as a passing glance- perhaps those small smiles, those cracks in his perfect courtier's mask, had been only figments of her imagination?
She sighed gracefully, conceding defeat, and looked back to the cold, hard ground.
So preoccupied was she with thoughts of that sun-kissed stallion that she failed to mind where her hooves fell.
The quail shot out of the brush with a flurry of wings, scolding the Soquili that had been two steps away from crushing its carefully-tended nest in a shrill, piercing voice. It flew about her head with frenzied hatred shining in its coal-black eyes, its chest puffed up in an attempt to scare her off.
Evelyn jerked to a halt, startled by the sudden movements of the mother quail. As the quail persisted in its futile attack, Evelyn lowered her head and backpedaled frantically, thoughts still scattered. Why- What-?
The quail's scolds were shrill enough to pierce the stillness of the morning air, carried upwards into the clouds by the cool wind.

One ear twitched backwards in curiosity at the sound of a loud bird shrieking into the still air, and the light hoofbeats that followed. Azure hues blinked blearily as he was roused from his thoughts, glancing back at the field he had passed over... only to do a double-take when he saw just who occupied that field.
Folding back one dark wing, the stallion did an airborne turnabout and soared back in the direction from whence he came, blinking in curiosity as an angry quail zoomed past him and into the air, still squawking indignantly. A wry smirk twisted his features, hiding the slight about of warmth that lifted his spirits at the appearance of his friend, outstretching his hooves, and landing in a graceful trot a few meters away from her still form.
"Are you always in the habit of making avian enemies?"
The question was light, almost teasing in its nature- although Kureno never teased, so it would be called something else. A flicker of warmth flitted through the azure pupils of his visage before it vanished beneath the depths of his stoic expression once more, but he nodded in greeting to the familiar mare with more respect than he showed to most.

The quail paused in its attack as it heard the beat of wings much larger than its own, darting back into the brush as soon as it had assured itself that the four-legged beast was far enough away from its nest to cause no harm.
Evelyn stared after the small bird, her eyes still widened with shock. She blinked quickly as though to dismiss the encounter, a slight smile forming as she turned her lavender gaze towards the mysterious stallion. His wry smirk, the flicker of warmth that fluttered so briefly through his azure eyes- such subtleties did not escape her.
"I suppose winged beings find my company none too pleasing." she murmured the words with barely-disguised amusement, casting a pointed glance at his own ebony wings.
Though her honeyed words seemed to dare him to count himself among those who wished not to be near her, the lavender pools of shimmering light that served as her eyes said otherwise- hope shone from them like beacons of purity hefted in hopes of attracting a friend like a moth to the flame.
