I am wondering what would be a good versatile, wellmade bass that I could get for 400-500. I am preferring a four string. I need this particular bass
for jazz too. But I like to slap a bit...

so post your suggestions here. Kay thanks. Much appreciated,
Later.

What i would do is just get a fender jazz. it would be easier to get a reissue. they usually cost less than the non reissue ones. but either that or a p-bass reissue would work. either way youll get a good sound out of both for jazz and slap just dial in your tone right and youll be fine

Well, do you have any preferences to any brands or styles? Fender, Warwick, Rickenbacker? Is there any particular brand you care for? Taking a shot in the dark, I would say either a cheap Fender Jazz, or a Yamaha.

Also, don't be afraid to go to places like musiciansfriend.com and search through the basses and read the reviews.

I would suggest going to a local music stare and trying some out for yourself.

Fender Jazz is all ways a safe bet. Yamah has some good basses for jazz. I've seen a lot of jazz bassists at highschools with Peavy basses, and some with Rogue, and ibanez basses as well. The spector legend is a prity nice bass, I don't know if it would be the best for jazz you could give it a try.
In the peavy section, the Grind and Cirrus BXP are prity good basses as well.

all you need is a Maple Fretboard and a Master Tone control

that will get you all your Jazz to Funk to Punk to Classic Rock needs!

If you're lucky enough to find a G&L Tribute around that price, GO FOR IT. One of the most versatile basses.

you know what you should do is go to guitar center and talk them down on a new reissue 70's jazz bass. it's currently $700 but you can easily ask them to lower it to $600 cuz money is tight. very nice bass for a jap.

Since the ownership of Guitar Center has changed, it's gonna be harder for you to even find a Guitar Center that will let you talk them down since they're trying to do away with it. That and they're going to stop accepting used gear since the profit margin is almost nil. And yeah, the MIJ Fenders are great, better bang for your buck, and a lot times better bang period, than the MIA Fenders.
