I am unsure how long they live. I heard they can only regenerate 12 times, they live for 4,000 years, or they live forever. Which one is it?

In the classic series, it was established that Time Lords could regenerate 12 times, giving them 13 bodies. I don't think it was specified exactly how long each body could last (although the First Doctor's regeneration was partly prompted by him becoming too old for his body).

These days, who knows? biggrin

My boyfriend and I sometimes talk about this. Supposedly the doctor was over 100 during his first life, assuming that the beginning of the show (in the '60s) was his first life. Take that number and multiply it by 13, we get 1300. That is how long a time lord could possibly (if they were lucky) live on Gallifrey if they died of natural causes each time or if they died at an advanced age each time. Though they probably lived much longer, like 2000 or 3000 years. The thing is though that the regenerations can be controlled, giving more or less time to each Time Lord, by the counsel of Gallifrey, who no longer exist. So the Doctor may regenerate fewer or more times then 12. Nobody but the doctor knows for sure.

#2 (in War Games) said "We can live forever, barring accidents". So from that you would think a Time Lord's body is meant to live thousands of years at least, only "dying" when some accident makes him regenerate, and only dying for permanent if there is an accident after the final possible regeneration.
The Doctor's highly adventurous, dangerous life & his compassion, which causes him to often sacrifice himself for people around him, causes him to go through his regenerations at a highly accelerated rate.

Don't forget in the classic series in the Five Doctors they bribe the Master with a new set of regeneration's and in the new series the Master says they brought him back from the dead and gave him a new set of regeneration's.

As a side note the Doctor was over 900 in his 6th regeneration. David Tennant's Doctor is well over 1000 despite what he tells others.

And the Seventh Doctor, when asked in Remembrance Of The Daleks how he's able to completely rewire a piece of alien technology (the Dalek transmat), replies It's easy when you have 900 years experience!, which for my money puts him at a minimum of 925 (depending on how old he was when he got the TARDIS).

On a quick aside, the Tenth Doctor seems to regard being 90 years old as being a kid (The Stolen Earth).

It might just be my imagination, but didn't something come up about this in The Deadly Assassin? Possibly in the conversation between the two elderly looking Time Lords before the speech. Though I may be wrong about that, I'll have to go back and check.

There's a joke about that in the The Ten Doctors comic. The other Doctor's call 9's and 10's claims of being "900" to be a midlife crisis. XD

Unfortunatly, The Ten Doctors isn't canon. sad

I really like that comic. RTD could do a lot with that story, or SM o.o

In one episode the 4th Doctor states that in theory "barring accidents" Time Lords could live forever.

Which seems very possible if a Time Lord is able to also avoid giving up years of their life or some such.

doesn't anyone remember the episode when they went to a parallel world and the TARDIS died. the doctor then sacrificed 10 yrs of his life to revive it. does this only apply to his current body or other bodies resulting from regeneration. they really need to be more specific.
