I'm having embouchure troubles. So, my orthodontist took out my tongue guard (this metal thing that was in the front of my mouth, I had to make my embouchure all messed up just so I'd be able to play). Now I have two rubber bands in my mouth, both on the right side of my mouth.
Now, since I'm just starting marching band, this is messing me up a lot. I was constantly squeaking last night, which was just plain annoying, my sound was airy because I'm still adjusting, and I couldn't play for very long because my jaw would get tired (it's because of the rubber bands- my jaw is too far back, so I have to move it forward to play. This has always been tiring, but the rubber bands are making it so I can't even play half of a page. I'm trying to practice more, to help adjust, but I'm really being discouraged because everyone's better than me, and I can't do anything about it.
Any tips? I play the Alto Sax, and I'm really having a hard time. I can get the fingerings all right, but I can't control my sound at all. It's really bugging me. >_< And everyone is noticing these horrible squeaks.
EDIT: Thanks for the help, everyone! I was practicing last night, and everything sounded fine (except for the lower notes...but I probably wasn't using enough air xd ).

Theres something called "Brace Guard". http://wwbw.com/Standard-Brace-Guard-i108380.music Its pretty cheap on wwbw, but ask your orthodontist. From brace.org : "Will braces interfere with playing musical instruments? Playing wind or brass instruments, such as the trumpet, will clearly require some adaptation to braces. With practice and a period of adjustment, braces typically do not interfere with the playing of musical instruments."

Wendy Wicked that definitely sucks; I never had any troubles playing my trumpet when I had my braces; and I had something 10x worse than rubber bands A bite jumper O.o but I wish you luck braces deff. suck Thanks. It's only been a couple days, but I'm really impatient. This is the first time I've had any real problems. It could be from the fact that they made huge changes in my mouth last week and I'm learning how to deal the weather...
What's a bite jumper? I have these glue things on the back of my teeth that keep my teeth from touching my brackets- is it anything like that?
Harsh Marsh: Thanks for the advice. I'll probably adjust soon, I'm just not used to having so much trouble.

I don't have braces yet, (I know this is kind of a silly question..) but why do people have trouble playing reed/mp instruments w/ braces?? I know, I'm not the smartest person. xD I have to get braces too,but idk when. ~HM

ya. braces while playing sucks. especially when you're playing high f's on pic (trust me) they totally dig into your face, and they're always in the way of my embouchure, dang it! But give it time. you'll work around them. ANd once you get them off, you be like "Yay! now how do i play this without the metal?" and you'll hafta get used to your naked teeth again!

It also makes me tired to keep my lips and jaw forward on the mouthpiece to play. And I'm constantly replacing reeds because I accidentally chip them on my braces. The only instruments braces won't change anything for are percussion and strings and stuff.

Well, why don't you just take the rubber bands out while you play?
Also, you'll get used to playing with braces. I hated it at first too, but after 3 years of braces, I was really used to it. And when you get braces off, you play like 10 times better than you had with them. It's amazing.

I was going to be given something similar to that, but apparently I'm too old now or something since I already had my growth spurt, and it wouldn't help.
trumpetboy513: I wish I could take them out, but if I want to get them out as soon as possible, I have to keep them in all the time unless I'm eating or brushing my teeth. (Also, the orthodontist told me that if I didn't wear them 24/7, then she'd but my tongue guard back in. It gives me a lisp, and I despise it.)

I got braces around 2 years ago when I first started playing oboe--all I had was a little bleeding at my canines because the orthodontist put these sharp things there to hold my rubber bands in place. Now I have a retainer that I'll be taking out next year. why don't you try playing with those numbing things...my orthodontist gave me some, why don't you ask him? (you might not be able to feel much, but at least it'll give you more time to adjust...)

GAHHH. I play oboe too! I got my braces today. And I'm just wondering how I'm going to play, because it feels weird putting my lips around my teeth... Any tips?

I only wore my retainer when I went to my appts. and my ortho said I was doing a lovely job and my teeth hadn't moved a bit even though every appt. it got harder and harder to put the retainer in

All I can say is keep practicing and give it some time. I had braces as well and it took about two months to adjust (I am a quick learner). I would suggest doing the basics, such as long notes and low notes and work your way up. It is hard to get up to a High C again but with time, you'll make it.
