User Image

You are surrounded by people. Classmates, teachers, friends, and foes alike crowd together in this island of flickering firelight. Beyond the torches and candles, the dark is absolute.
Suddenly, you hear something very large shuffling toward the group, out of the darkness. It grunts softly as it comes ever closer, dragging a heavy club along behind it...
There are monsters in HPGOG.

--------------------------

We don’t know how, and we don’t know why, but this blackout seems to have drawn creatures never seen before into HPGOG itself. They appear to have a thirst for human blood, or perhaps are attracted by the light – either way, they draw steadily closer, and every now and then one will attack us. Without magic, we cannot set wards or fight with spells as usual. Our only option is to pilfer old muggle weapons from the suits of armor nearby and other locations, and fight the beasts off by hand.
--------------------------

The rules are simple. First off, choose either a melee (hand-to-hand, i.e. sword, dagger, spear, axe) or a ranged (distance, i.e. bow, crossbow, javelin, slingshot) weapon and announce that choice, along with your house (if you have one) in a shout-style post.
You can only change weapon type twenty-four hours after you first selected or last changed your type. To change, announce your new weapon sort in a new shout-style post. Do not roll dice or roleplay in that same post.
--------------------------

To attack, roll a 10-sided die.
House elves and those without special attack/defense points (which are explained below) will follow this number rubric:
1 = instant kill of monster
2-4 = you are hit by monster
5-7 = you miss, but so does the monster
8-10 = you score a hit on the monster, but it’s not dead yet

--------------------------

After posting this roll, you can go back, edit your post, and roleplay the effects. To know the effect of hitting or getting hit by a monster, read the monster post below.

SPECIAL ATTACK/DEFENSE

By belonging to a certain house and using a certain type of weapon, you can be more likely to hit or less likely to be hit by a monster. These special numbers are outlined below.

User ImageGryffindor
Melee bonus attack
1 = instant kill
2-4 = you are hit
5-6 = miss
7-10 = you score a hit

Hufflepuff
Melee bonus defense
1 = instant kill
2-3 = you are hit
4-7 = miss
8-10 = you score a hit

User ImageRavenclaw
Ranged bonus attack
1 = instant kill
2-4 = you are hit
5-6 = miss
7-10 = you score a hit

Slytherin
Ranged bonus defense
1 = instant kill
2-3 = you are hit
4-7 = miss
8-10 = you score a hit

For House Elves: you don’t have a bonus in attack or defense, but scroll on down to the hit points post and read for your special ‘power’.

MONSTERS

Please note that these sketches are very rough, given the creatures' unwillingness to stand still for long, the lack of good lighting, and the needs to kill them off quickly and move on to safety. As such, these are only rough guides to appearances.

User Image A Troll? We’re not sure exactly what this is, but it seems to resemble your average mountain troll in several ways, including the over-long arms, short, stumpy legs, squinty eyes, bad posture, and club (actually a tree limb). However, this one has a horned head and seems just a little more intelligent, and slightly less smelly. NOTE: These ‘trolls’ have rather tough skin, and ranged attacks have slightly less effect than usual. Any ranged fighters who roll a 10 against a troll hit it, but the shot has no physical effect.

User Image Chimaera of a different kind. These seem to be an odd mix of dragon, lion, donkey, scorpion/lobster(?) and...we’re not certain. But be careful; they seem able to throw the spikes from their tail like javelins. They also seem to favor snapping jabs with their claws, and throwing their heads forward to try to catch you on their horns. NOTE: These ‘chimaeras’ are quite fast and adept at anticipating close-range attacks. Any melee fighters who roll a 10 against a chimaera are dodged.

User Image Winged Dragon-Horse...From a distance, they look rather harmless. But you’d better hope they keep their distance, because aside from nasty horns and a tendency to rear and flail their sharp hooves at you, the tail is tipped with a curved barb, and it is poisonous. Despite their wings, they seem unable to fly, and can only run and jump as high and as fast as your average horse. NOTE: These winged horses have a disarming effect on females of any age or disposition. Any female fighters who roll a 5 are hit.

User ImageSome sort of Siren: Entrancingly beautiful and sinisterly silent, these veela-like creatures approach in the form of a woman...if, that is, a woman has wickedly long, sharp claws. These sirens make no sound whatsoever (even when killed). Their approach is totally silent, adding to the danger in them, because if they get close enough to someone to get their claws in that person, the results aren’t pretty. They seem to be rather toxic, actually. NOTE: These Sirens have a disarming effect on males of any age or disposition. Any male fighters who roll a 5 are hit.

HIT POINTS and TIME-OUT

All monsters must be successfully hit three times to be killed...unless, of course, someone rolls a 1 for an instant kill. The three hits can be any combination of melee and ranged attacks.
--------------------------

If you are hit by a Troll or a Chimaera, you must sit out and recover for six hours real-time.
If you are hit by a Horse or a Siren, you must sit out and recover for twelve hours real-time.
IF YOU ARE A HOUSE ELF, your recovery times are as follows:
Troll/Chimaera: Three hours
Horse/Siren: Six hours

--------------------------

Since residents of HPGOG are not accustomed to fighting muggle-style, we cannot really keep up the action for long. As such, each fighter (student, teacher, and house-elf alike) may only make ten (10) attempts at attacking in one twenty-four-hour period. Periods are counted off from midnight to midnight...one day to the next.
--------------------------

Note that every 12 hours, a new monster (announced in a Document-style post by Alutian or another mod) will approach. If the current monster is not yet dead, you will have to start specifying which critter you are attacking in your posts.

INSTANT KILL RECORDS

For bragging rights and other fun things, here’s a record of all the instant kills that have occurred so far. Applaud the skill (or luck) of these brave folk and strive to do the same!

Format is as follows:
>Username: page #, page #, etc.<
Which means that if a person has three numbers following their name, they have three instant kills, no matter what those numbers are. Okay?

Nick_Jonas_Luvr: page 3, 8, 12, 13, 19, 22, 24, 26, 26*
Mirao: page 28, 34, 35
Lyra Elizabeth: page 7, 17, 39
Corona Australis: page 6, 10
MyMoonLitDream: page 5, 15
bucbucLA: page 27
the_cereal_queen: page 30
Miss Love Tantei: page 36

---------------
*Not a typo. She did get two on the same page.

Just because it was Super:
Check out Page 8. Nick_Jonas_Luvr, of Hufflepuff, killed a Siren by herself - all three hits. Not an instant kill, but still pretty darn impressive.

For your reference...
Here are some examples of rp posts. You needn't follow them exactly. I may add more examples if questions come up.
Note: The first post is during the roll. The second is edited after the roll, to rp the effects.

player 1
*attacking Troll. Hufflepuff melee.*

Player 1 rolls a 7
player 1
*attacking Troll. Hufflepuff melee.*
EDIT
Play ran at the troll, waving his sword with both hands and shouting a battlecry: "HUFFLEPUFF!"
With all of his attention on the monster before him, though, he didn't see what was in front of his feet. The Hufflepuff fourth-year tripped over a discarded crossbow, missing the troll completely as he stumbled.
*Result: Miss*

Suzie_Q
Suzie faced the demon-horse, taking careful aim down the shaft of her arrow...
((This will be my fifth shot in six hours. Horse has been hit once so far. I can claim Ravenclaw ranged bonus.))

Suzie_Q rolls an 8.
Suzie_Q
Suzie faced the demon-horse, taking careful aim down the shaft of her arrow...
Just as the horse reared up before the line of melee fighters, Suzie released the bowstring. The arrow hit the monster in the ribs. It screamed in pain and began to lash about.
Satisfied, but tired, Suzie retreated to behind the lines to recover her strength and help tend to those wounded or unable to fight.
((This was my fifth shot in six hours. Horse has been hit twice.))

Go ahead and start choosing your weapons. I'll post my choices below as a rough rubric (you needn't follow it exactly) though I'll probably only join the fight infrequently.

On a side note, mods are welcome to fight.

Ravenclaw
melee (Two double-edged short swords)

[*Note that as a Ravenclaw melee fighter, I can claim no bonus in attack or defense. Also, I mentioned exactly what weapon I'm using; this is not necessary, but you can do so if you wish.]

Even though you've been directed here, do NOT post until Alutian says it's okay to do so.

Professor Adonis: It's okay. Right now it's just set up. I'm giving them some time to read over the rules and play, familiarize themselves, pick a weapon. The only thing they can't do before I bring out the critter is roleplay.
