Ok so I have a short little story and a question for all of you who have Hebrew names and live outside a Hebrew speaking place.
So, last year right before Hanukkah I went with my friend to the mall to get her hair done. It turns out that she got a straightener from a kiosk run by Israelis and they do you hair for free. So after a while one of the guys say to me that he'll do MY hair. So Im sitting there and two of the guys are straightening my mass of curly/frizzy hair and one asks me what my name is. So I tell him...(not telling anyone on the internet sorry but it is a Hebrew name.) And he says 'Oh, is that what you go buy or do you use a different english name?'. And yes I do go buy it.
Well I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Yes I know its kind of pointless but I just felt like asking.

I have a weird system of separating the mundane with the sacred.
For example.
When I'm in a temple, and doing something within the service and I am called by name, I prefer my Hebrew name.
When I attended Talmud study groups, I went by my Hebrew name.
My Hebrew name is one of five different monikers I go by.
There's a great line from "Escape from Sorbibor" in regards to that.
(Nazi guard goes to a large overweight concentration camp prisoner and starts harrasing him and intimidating him.) "What is your name? I want to hear it, you're good... Christian name." (The Jew says nothing and continues to cut bread into slices) "Can't you hear me... Jew? I want to hear your Christian name!" (The Jew is pressed into the wall by the Nazi, still clutching the knife in his hand) "Didn't your parents have the deciency to give you a good... Christian Name?" (at this point, the Jew takes the knife and stabs the guard repeatedly, killing him.) "My Parent's gave me a Jewish Name" (says the prisoner) "AND IT'S CHAIM!"
then all hell breaks loose, go watch that movie, great movie.

My middle name is Shlomoh and that's what I go by, unless I'm with gentiles I'll probably never see again in which case I give them my first name which is Andrew. I figure why confuse them for the 5 minutes out of their life their interacting with me. The gentiles I have long term relationships with know me as Shlomoh, because that's what I'm used to.

I'm with Neuf-I only go by my Hebrew name in a temple, study groups, hebrew school, etc. So nobody really asks me if I go by a different name, as I just go by my first one.

I knew a set of sisters named -- I kid you not -- Prudence, Endurance, and Sufferance. Their parents were fundamentalist Christians, as one might guess. I always felt bad for them, but they said at least they didn't have three other kids in their classes with their names, unlike all the girls named Jennifer, Tina, Lisa, and Amy.

Suddenly, I'm in the mood to watch "Hope and Glory."
Grandpa: You want to know why they're called Faith, Hope, Grace and Charity?
Billy : Why?
Grandpa : Your Grandmother. She named them after the virtues I lack. That's marriage for you!
Great movie.
