It was midday when the soothsayer opened her booth, the tasseled purple cloth opening like the curtains on a stage to reveal the inside of her booth. Charms and beads hung from the top of the stand, while the little benches along the side held bottles of strangely coloured liquids and a little stick of incense burning in the back corner. Today it was Patchouli, the wind wafting out the scent to any who passed by. The stall was more elaborately decorated than any of the others nearby, however this was no surprise to the regular market goers. After all, who would expect anything less from the Mystical Soothsayer? These words were written in a neat cursive hand on the wooden sign board that sat above the charms. On the ground was a stand-up sign, which bore the words "Charms, wards, and palm reading available."
Gyp sat neatly on her stool inside her shady stall, working on a rather strangely shaped charm. At her feet sat a strange little rat boy, oblivious to the work she was doing above his head. Instead, he was interested in the collection of figurines he had brought with him. A small toy bison, a Bionicle, and a little Lego Creation were among them, though Kiba didn't seem to mind that none of them matched. He was busy chattering away to himself and moving the figures around, telling a story in his own little language. Gyp looked up from her work to smile toothily at him, before returning to her charm designing. The charms near the door would rattle if someone arrived, so she would know if she was needed.

It was midday when Alex finally dragged himself and his charge out of their small, beach side house. They were going for a walk. Again. Shocking. And like every day before, the Captain dragged the little unicorn down the the beach, to walk. And sulk. And limp. And sulk some more. It was rather boring. But today, they kept walking. Went up the stairs and and walked down the street, to the market. There was a market around here? How come they'd never gone before?
Or, rather, how come Alex had never taken Devakanya before?
The girl looked around with wide eyes, stepping closer to her guardian as he mingled his way through the crowd. The ex-pirate seemed to know exactly where he wanted to go. As for the unicorn, it was all she could do to keep from getting- Hey! What was that?
In a sudden burst of inspiration, the little blue unicorn grabbed Alex's hand and started dragging him towards a fortune booth. You know, the ones where you got your future. The little girl was always intrigued by magic. Unable to contain herself, she forcibly led the seaman all the way to the booth, ignoring his protests. Wait. Was anyone here?

It was Kiba who noticed the approach of the pair first, his large pink ears perking instantly. Oooh, now what was that? Clearly quite fascinated by the unicorn – the seaman was pretty nifty too but the unicorn was very shiny – he gave her a welcome wave and a squeak. His language skills were still rather lacking, especially in the English department, however that didn't stop him from adding a series of chitters and churrs to his squeak. Kibarango was very eager to make friends with anyone who entered Gyp's booth no matter what they looked like, and Devakanya seemed like the perfect sort to talk to. She was even a girl! He had only met a select few of those before.
"Welcome, friends. How may I be of assistance to you this fine day?" Gyp grinned toothily at the pair, as she set down the charm she was working on. A man of the ocean, by the looks of it, and his young charge. The fox had lived on Gaia long enough to know that most children did not look like the people they lived with, and thus suspected that the man was simply Devakanya's guardian rather than her father. Such things were common on Gaia, so it was merely an observation.

Devakanya was momentarily sidetracked by the rat, ears flattening at all the noises. What? She didn't understand! It was hard enough being a mute, but mute and stupid? Didn't sit well. The blue unicorn stepped closer to Alex and gave Kiba a wary look, her tail swishing from side to side. She looked up at the captain once before giving Kiba another look. Just because she was nervous didn't mean she wasn't curious.
Meanwhile, Alex addressed the woman in charge of the booth with a bored look. He sighed and shrugged. "Girl dragged me in here, she's the one that wants yer...ah...assistance." The seaman narrowed his eyes. If she pulled any tricks on the girl, she'd be sorry. The ex-pirate nudged the girl with his bandaged hand before stuffing it back into his pocket. "Don't be rude."
Devakanya blinked and blushed furiously, bowing her head to the fortune teller before stepping closer. She simply wanted her palm read, maybe a charm. But how was she supposed to ask? The unicorn shrugged and stared down, extending a hand shyly.

She wasn't going to talk to him? Kiba tilted his head at this, a slight frown forming on his face. He had only ever met one person who didn't like him, but at the time he had been completely oblivious to it. This was the first person he recognized dislike in, or perhaps it was fear? Either way, the ear posture was very familiar. He settled for giving her a small churr, before shuffling closer to Gyp's skirt. He would watch her until she spoke to him.
Gyp met the narrowed eyes with a look of her own, though the smile did not leave her face. The only change in her expression was a minute raise of one eyebrow, as if to say "you think you can take me, cripple?" She was used to dealing with sailors, and this one wasn't half as threatening as some of the ones that came to see her. Of course, they were usually more interested in buying safety charms for their boats than picking fights with females from the fox clan. But she had more important things to worry about than this grouchy gimp. She had a customer!
The fortune teller turned her attention to the unicorn girl, scrutinizing her for a moment before letting her expression soften. This child was quite shy, and appeared to have some sort of issues speaking. No matter, the child would just have to communicate her desires in other ways. The offered palm was a clear enough request, and Gyp smiled. "A palm reading? Certainly. What would you like to know about? Life? Love? Fate? Fame?"

Devakanya felt a pang of guilt with the rat made a soft noise and made for his mother. She hadn't meant to make him feel bad, or anything. He was just very...odd. She shifted uneasily, wondering if she should apologize, when Gyp began speaking to her and caught her attention. Oh. There were that many things she could read on her palm? The girl shrugged a little and stepped closer.
Well. She held out one finger, then two, and finally three. When she held out four, she shook her head. A mute really didn't need to be concerned with fame or anything. But life and fate would be pretty interesting, but more importantly was love. Raised on fairy tale princesses, finding a prince charming was more important than she'd ever actually admit.
Alex grunted and stepped aside, but he wasn't at all intimidated by the look. People underestimated him because he limped. The seaman always had his pistol in his pocket, though, and a gun trumped just about anything else when it really came down to it. But enough about that. "She's mute," he rumbled, clarifying. "So those are the only answers yer gonna get."
Devakanya sighed and twisted to give Alex a pained look before shaking her head and looking back to Gyp. She did understand, right?

Gyp watched the hand gestures carefully, before asking, "So life, love and fate but no fame?" It was merely a clarification, just in case the girl had put the choices in a different order. Not that that made any sense, but you never knew. The unicorn girl seemed competent enough in her signs that the soothsayer knew that she must do this a lot. If only Kiba would start doing that. He was fairly easy to please though, which made sign language pretty much unnecessary for those who knew him. But for the general public, communicating with the rat boy was quite a challenge.
"I figured she was a mute when she didn't speak," Gyp answered smoothly, though she didn't take her eyes off her client. "I'll need to see your hand, sweetie, palm up." The vixen offered her own hand palm up for Dev to put her hand on top of. It made reading easier if she could see them up close. "Now... let's see... the life line is here." She traced a line that started from where the thumb connected to the rest of the hand, and then traced the line down to the unicorn girl's wrist. "You see how yours goes down here, and then breaks off a bit, and then a new line starts again? That means something of great chance has happened in your life."
Knowing that Gyp was working, and thus would not speak with him, Kiba turned his attention to Alex. He stared at the man for a moment, ears wiggling, before he gave him a small wave. This man didn't look anything like Silas's big man, but he had the same smell about him. Rough and from the sea. Kiba knew a sailor when he saw one. "Brrrrr?" He asked, and drew a small picture of a boat in the dirt. The ratling pointed at the boat, and then looked back up at Alex. Did he have one?
