Hayagriva's tail, his kalona tail lashed behind him with barely repressed anger. He pushed through bracken and brush, heedless of how thorns and stray twigs snagged into his fur and mane. His child. His daughter. He had entrusted her to this mare that he thought he had known. He had trusted that she would be loved and cared for by this mare who seemed to have so much love in her heart.

He had been wrong.

What sort of love would have allowed and encouraged that sort of perversity to grow within a foal? His breath caught in his throat and he gave his mane a vicious and sharp tug when it became entangled. Mapiya had taught Adour to be a kalona. Haya had spent all of his life fighting the curses of his blood and she had given the filly over to it from the very beginning.

A deep anger burned within him beside a sense of betrayal. He would confront Mapiya. Perhaps she had some saving words to say, something he could bring back to Ayanna to comfort her with. Shouldering past a small sapling, Haya emerged into the area he knew was occupied by Mapiya and her herd. She'd be here, somewhere...

Mapiya sighed softly as she spoke with Nene. She often sent the old wolf after Adour when the young filly went hunting. It was the best she could do to keep her safe. Hearing this report however, she knew that her old friend Haya would be there soon.

Hearing a crash in the underbush, she turned to see the stallion in question charging though the bushes. She heaved another sigh as she started towards him. This was not going to be pretty, but she could only hope that her old friend , whom she loved so dearly, would listen to reason.

Part of Haya's mind told him to stop and take a breath to calm himself before confronting Mapiya. He needed to have a clear mind to be able to deal with this situation properly.

Today, though, anger overwhelmed rationality. Instead of pausing he broke into a run when he saw her, digging his hooves into the ground to jerk to a stop in front of the mare. His body language spoke to his emotions before he even said a word. His gray eyes were narrowed and burned hotly with something never before shown before Mapiya. His tail still lashed behind him like an enraged serpent. His hooves couldn't seem to stand still either, alternating between pawing at the ground and stepping one way or the other.

"You." The way he said it turned the word into a sharp accusation. "You turned Adour into a monster."

All the calm left her eyes as she laid her ears flat back teeth bared. She had fought groundwalkers, flyers, even kalona to protect 'her' child, she would be damned if she would let him disrespect the child he should love.

"She is -NOT- a monster. She is what she is born. I love you Haya, you have been my friend but you will -NOT- disrespect her."

Mapiya took a deep breath, counting slowly as she tried to calm down. It was a struggle to unpin her ears and talk to him calmly, but it would do no good to get angry too.

"I assume you found her hunting?"

"Yes, I did," snapped Haya. Though Mapiya had found her calm he had yet to find his. His temper was slow to awaken but once the fire had been lit it would not cease burning so easily. He did pause between words but it wasn't for calming. It was a halting while the mare's words processed and sunk in.

What she is born...

"You think that's all she's- We're capable of?" His head shot back and his eyes open. "She could have been beautiful and kind. She isn't kalona... We aren't kalona. We aren't bound by our bloodlines to be the killers that you're trying to turn her into."

"She was dying Haya!!"

Again the mare's control snapped as she snorted at him. It hurt her more than she could ever voice that he would think so little of her, that he would assume she hadn't tried.

"Our two legger tried to feed her milk, we tried grass, we tried grains. Gods above and below Haya I was watching her die infront of me. " She shuddered her gold eyes closing sadly.

" Everyday I had to watch the foal I love wasting away a bit more. Her coat became dull, her eyes glassy. She could barely walk anymore...then one day Nene brought home a rabbit she had killed and feed her in the same manner she woudl a wolf pup. Adour kept it down. She began to thrive again."

She sighed again shaking her head "I love her Haya, she is my daughter in everything but blood. Can you really blame me for doing something I would have -never- considered before, to make sure she lived? I would have killed for her myself if that was what it took to make her healthy, make sure she lived. "

Haya was shocked into silence.

Dying? His initial reactions rejected it. She couldn't have been. He had managed to survive without blood and flesh, hadn't he? It was ridiculous that his daughter would be any different... utterly ridiculous. His anger wavered slightly when struck by the pain of the truth that she spoke.

He had fathered a kalona.

"You should have told me." His anger had grown more quiet and this time, not all of it was directed at Mapiya. "Why did you never tell me she was like this? You should have told me." His eyes narrowed again and his tail wound tightly around his back leg. "We could have figured out something else once she was better... something that wouldn't turn her into this."

" When? When could I have told you Haya?" She shooked her head again. "You gave her to me and then disappeared. You act as if I wouldn't have looked for you. You who I have always called my best friend. Do you think me so shallow as to not try and find you to tell you something so important?"

"I did what I had to do to protect my daughter. Nene hunted for her till she was back to her full strenght then taught her how to feed herself. We taught her how to fight, hwo to hunt and how to fly. We taught her how to survive Haya. I will not ask for forgiveness for doing what I had to make sure she would live."

Haya's teeth showed in a grimace of disgusted anger. She was blaming him for this? "There has to have been another way. I don't eat meat. My other two children don't eat meat."

He turned his head and glared balefully out into the distance. The angle of the sun made the very sky itself seem bloody and impure, just like his lost daughter. "I shouldn't have left her with you. I would have understood what she was going through better than you did and been able to find something else to do. I wouldn't have let her become a monster." His voice was thick with anger and grief, grief for the beautiful gold-winged filly that could have been so different.

Mapiya made a faint noise of pain, flinching back. She hadn't been blaming him and for him to lash out at her.... She closed her eyes tightly so he wouldn't see tears gathering there.

"What's done is done Hayagriva," if he stopped a moment he would realize she had never, ever called him by his full name before. "You may wish different but what is done is done. I think you need to leave, I think perhaps you should take some time before returning...if you return. Leave."

It broke her heart to think this would be the end of their friendship, but her love for the small filly that had been left in her care was stronger than the love she felt for the golden stallion. "Please just leave."

"Is that all you can say to me?" His mouth opened then snapped shut again. "Leave?"

The anger was building again and set his skin to shivering in ripples down his back. "I trusted you and you betrayed me. You betrayed both of us." He began to advance towards Mapiya with his head held low like a wolf. "You-"

"Back off!"

From behind came Caelin, head tossing as he moved himself between Haya and Mapiya. "I won't let you threaten her like that and you aren't making sense when you're this angry... so back off!" He had heard raised voices and in them heard more than he knew he should have. That could wait. For now his only task was to keep the half-kalona away from Mapiya.

" Cae! Please don't." She nickered softly, " Don't hurt him please." Her golden eyes had darkened as she tried not to cry. She had never betrayed Haya and would never betray her daughter. How could he even think that?

"Think before you do this kiddo." Nene's voice was soft and calm as she stalked foreward to stand by Caelin's side, between the foal she helped raised and the mare that loved her. " This ain't gonna make anything better or eaiser on you or her."

Meeting a sudden wall of opposition, Haya faltered. He had never seen the stallion before but the wolf was a familiar face. Nene and Mapiya had both united against him and had both helped to train his daughter to murder. They had both...

He blinked and it was like a mist had blown away from his eyes. He was behaving like a kalona while he was ranting against them. His disgust for himself now outweighed his anger and he shook his head while taking a step away from the three. "Fine... I'm going." He looked over them again, the friend he had trusted, the wolf that had been there throughout his childhood, and the stallion he had only just met.

"But don't think I won't be back later. I just need to think about this... and I'm going to want to talk to Adour again sometime!" He gave Mapiya a sharp look. "Because she's my daughter and I ought to be more part of her life, right?"

Caelin watched Haya but said nothing. Instead, he leaned himself closer to Mapiya so that their flanks just touched. It was a small contact but he hoped it was enough of one to bring her some comfort.

Mapiya bite back a helpless moan of pain. Haya had been her first friend in this new strange land. For a short time she had throw about the thought to prehaps there being something more than friendship for them but it was not to be. And to think that he....

She shuddered leaning into Caelin, tears running down the dark marks on her face. It broke her heart that he would believe such...

Nene sighed softly "Son we are trying our best. We can't help our blood. None of us can. There ain't nothing wrong with being what we are."

Nothing wrong with being what they are. Haya stopped in his tracks and was still. Nothing wrong. His spaded tail skimmed over the grass and his tongue felt the teeth in his mouth that were a little too sharp to be meant entirely for eating grass. Was Nene telling him that he ought to be out there tearing deer's throats out too? Was that what she wanted him to become?

"You're wrong." He still was facing away from them and this time he didn't look back as he spoke. "What we are is kalona... and there is something wrong with that."

He couldn't stand to be near them any longer or to hear anything else they had to say. He reared back and then jumped forward into a gallop that carried him away. Nothing wrong with being what we are. How could Nene had said it so simply? Nothing wrong.... His sharp teeth ground tight together and he kept on running.

He had much to think about.

It was hard for Caelin to restrain himself from tearing after the half-kalona. After he had done that to Mapiya he thought he could just run off? It filled him with anger and the beginnings of a hiss escaped from his mouth before he stifled it.

Mapiya loved Adour. That was evident. If Hayagriva thought that she would willingly and knowingly transform that filly into a "monster" then he was even more of an idiot than he had acted today.
