Sorry guys... I am so sorry.... But FF XII was a complete failure. It was Square's one chance to show they had what it takes in order to create a good game with a good story line and in my eyes - they blew it. I hated everything about it. That fall out with Hironobu Sakaguchi was their WORST mistake they could ever make, along with the chain loss of Nobuo Uematsu. Their two strengths taken in one fatal, proud swipe. OUCH. The downfall started at FF X-2 and began its steady descent. Personally - I LOVE Hironobu Sakaguchi - FF I though X were, lets face it, the most incredible games i have ever played. I still have dreams about Zidane, Vivi, Cecil, Locke, Terra, Rikku, Tidus, Amarant and all the AMAZING characters. I just don't see why they'd go and destroy the beauty of it all...

I really liked XII, but since it's pretty much the only game after X-2, I can't say either way. I liked how political it was, and how there was less obvious drama and more of a 'hmmm...' factor (yes, I've invented a 'hmmm' factor).
So, I vote other.

I've only played VII- XII (not including XI) and the only one I wasn't fussed on was VIII, though I still played it and it was decent enough. If you like X I can see reasons that you wouldn't like X-2, it was just different, but the world changes and we have to be ready to embrace those changes, even within our beloved Final Fantasy series.
I can honestly say I have never been OVERLY disappointed in any Final Fantasy.

Mm, I don't think it's that simple. XII may not have been my favorite, but it sure was better than I or II. Of course, there were different standards then, but I still like anything VII up (sans XI, having never played it) better than them.
XII, to me, had really, really good things, and really bad things. Character development for most of the characters could have been much better, including NPCs, but the dialogue, for example, was incredible. It would help me discuss it if you talked about what you thought was so bad about XII...
OK, I'm not sure if I'm really going anywhere with this now. They've all got good and bad points, but basically I'd say the middle-ish ones were the best.

FFXII is a really good game, even as FF games are concerned. Sure, it's very different, but not in a bad way. It carries everything that the traditional FF game does.
The only thing I didn't like was the license system. Who the hell needs a license to wear hats?

chaos.ultima.mage The only thing I didn't like was the license system. Who the hell needs a license to wear hats? It's all Archadia's fault. After they invaded Dalmasca, they instituted all these new laws regulating what people can wear, and you have to get a license, like you would with a boat. And of course, the party wouldn't even think of breaking Archadian law. Silly.

I destroyed this game in less than a week and soon deemed it kinda unworthy of giving it another play-through. Most of the characters had personalities made of cardboard and some even died too early to even get an idea of who they really were.
Music also plays a key role in my gaming experience and this game just wasn't that good.
FFXII is a game where grinding is sometimes necessary to progress in the story. And with grinding, sometimes comes spending hours in one area. Not only did the lack of a battle theme other than the boss battles irk me, but also the nearly complete lack of catchy melodies in the songs. There was nothing memorable enough to hum while going about my daily business and that was just disappointing.

Ah, I loved the music in XII! It's my favorite of all of them. blaugh
I don't think the characters had cardboard personalities, it was just a little more subtle than previous games. The characters seemed more realistic to me.

I've only just started playing FFXII (and only started because it was in HMV's 2 for £25 collection). I didn't like the look of it and didn't really like much of what I'd heard of it. Now that I'm actually playing it...I honestly don't know what I think. It obviously has charm because I'm still getting the 'must...play...more' feeling (heh...but that happens with all FF games). There's lots to like about it but there's lots to dislike. For instance, it's pretty much a cross between a typical FF (or just regular fantasy) world and a Star Wars-esque world, which I'm just finding hard to process, lol. And there's something that is stopping me from really liking it, and I don't know what it is yet. Maybe it's all the politics? I tuned out when the politics came into SW (which is probably why I can't remember much of the latest ones, haha) and I'm kinda doing the same with this. IMO, all XII has better than previous installments is the battle system (it was annoying at first but once I got the hang of it it's the best thing ever :) wink . I love Vaan, though. Because if it wasn't for his story, so far I would be thoroughly bored by all the politics and such. XII reminds me too much of Star Wars to be able to accept fully. As for X-2...I haven't played it and doubt I will. I like X as it is biggrin . Apart from the dead Tidus thing... Quote: The only thing I didn't like was the license system. Who the hell needs a license to wear hats? Lmao. Awesome point smile . I'll be honest...I don't like the direction that FF is going in. As in technology. The earlier technology games kept a healthy balance, or the story was so good and fantasy enough that you tended to let it slip, but in XII it seems kind of out of place...a world where they're still fighting with swords, but they have high-tech airships and big guns. Not to mention medieval meets the far future. Cyberpunk (like VII) would work, somehow that doesn't. Then there's FFXIII, which I will be kind on because it's not out yet. The idea seems great (way more FF than XII), and the trailer reminded me a little of X in parts. Then I heard that the summons are supposed to be 'digital'... Yeah, I think I'm looking more forward to versus now. Um...sorry for the long post.

Yeah, I think I'm looking more forward to versus now. Um...sorry for the long post. I personally love the politics, but my problem is that's all there is. There's very little focus on the characters themselves, and that's one of Final Fantasy's strongest points. I would love Vaan because he's more of a person than a plot device, unlike the other characters, but there's just so little focus on it that he seems tacked on. Thank you, by the way; that's the first time I've realized it from exactly that perspective. I think the feel of it, and with the technology, is more like the the very early Final Fantasies, along with IX. The airships are a bit out of place, but it's mostly the shiny flashy lights that do that, rather than the actual technology (still a little annoying, though). I do have to say that the very beginning was totally Star Wars, but it loses that feel later on, thank goodness.

the first FF game i ever played was X and i was instantly addicted. after that i got XII and got as far as the first judge battle and completely gave up. it wasnt until about a month ago that i decided to give it another try and now im just as addicted to XII as i am with X! so i guess the newer series just takes getting used to. ^^

I didnt like the battle system in XII, plus the story is good but WAY drug out. I like both sides. The Crisis Core B.S. was a nice change from turn based combat, but XII is screwy

I have to give Square-Enix props for wanting to do something different. How many games or sequels are their that just follow the same old, over-done stories/controls/characters etc and I for one am sick to bloody death of it. I'm sick of seeing all these so called "great games" that are trying to be the next Devil May Cry or God of War or Metal Gear Solid or Gran Turismo or whatever only to see them populating the discount game shelf. That, or they become platinum which gives people the idea that it's a good game. 50 Cents games are a good example of this. But that's not what the topic is about...
Square-Enix wanted to do things differently. Did it pay off? In my opinion, yes, it did. I like FFXII, I really do. The battle system takes a little getting used to if you're not familiar with that kind of system but I thought it was a welcome change. I thought the story was great, not the best but certainly nothing to bag. The characters... Ok, yeah I didn't like some of them (Penelo being the main one) but I think we can all agree that Balthier well and truely makes up for that (Can I get an amen?!).
I think all the FF's suffer from a few bad things. Most of them are probably personal opinions more then actual game flaws.
But my love for the earlier FF games will always be there. I grew up playing the old SNES FF games and grew used to how they were, despite how odd it seemed to me then. So for the people who aren't used to the way FFXII is, do what I did with the older games. Give it time. It'll grow on you.
