Shani was napping in the family den, not unusual since taking it upon herself to watch over her mother's now basically orphaned cubs. As soon as a smarter lion saw the cubs it was hard to imagine they were Mvumo's, and her father had become so distant. Kubwa had Tetemeko, and everyone suspected a girlfriend. Tetemeko was their nephew, and he too had his own life. Now, without her mother and seemingly without her father.. Shani didn't have anything. She only had them, Enzi and Anya, and the memories of her final moments with her mother. They were getting bigger and healthier, with some help from the pride nannies. And they were curled up at Shani's side, asleep, that afternoon in the den. Shani wavered in and out of sleep, trying to evade dreams about her mother, about her family before all of this had happened.
