Drink lots and lots and lots of water, and make sure to wear sunscreen and light colored clothes.
Plus, definitely pay attention to what the staff tells you. Your life will be alot easier if you don't make trouble.

Ah, first time marching. The memories... emo
Anyway. First off - WATER. You will need it, and in large quantities. You'll get dehydrated and sick without it.
Wear sneakers or tennis shoes with socks. Your feet will die a most horrible and blistery death in anything else. If you receive your own marching shoes during band camp, you can wear those too. Usually marching shoes are ordered during band camp and don't show up until a little before the first game.
Pay attention to what your BDs, your band officers, your techs, your section leaders, and your upperclassmen are doing and what they're telling you. They know what they're doing, and they're doing their best to teach you with minimal mishap. Don't argue with them, just do as they say. But if someone's being mean to you for no apparent reason, tell your BD and they'll sort it out.
Protect yourself from the sun with a hat that shades your face and sunscreen with good SPF. It doesn't matter if you tan easily; you still need to get protected. I'm paranoid about tanning and I use an SPF 50 sunscreen, yet I still manage to get tan lines.
Above all, get to know your band mates and have fun. You'll be working with these people for the rest of your high school band career, so relax with them and make some friends. I hope you have a great time in marching band! blaugh

Another thing, the seniors and juniors are going to be very critical of you, but they can help. No matter how frustrated you get just keep in mind that you are always going to get better. The toughest part is learning how to deal with everyone's else, but as long as you just keep an open mind you should be fine. Remember, people get really cranky when they've been working their butts off in the hot sun. ^^ I'm sure you'll do great and have fun! Stay positive!

stickyfeet I'm about to start my first band camp. Any advice for the new kid? (besides "Don't lock your knees) XD That's the first marching band advice I ever got! Well, go to Target or somewhere and get one of those gallon-or-so insulated jugs. Fill it halfway with ice, then put in a mix of Propel, Gadorade, and fruit juice (in coordinating flavors, of course razz ). Mix to taste. As the day wears on, you'll find that the mix gets less and less concentrated due to the melting ice, which also serves to keep it cool. My band christened this drink "Rachel-ade" XD Also, don't forget your hat and sunglasses! You'll regret it during basics block if you don't have them! And make sure to have some strong sunscreen with you. Even the people that never burn get sunburn during band camp. Finally, do some physical training beforehand. Swim laps at the local pool (Butterfly is the best stroke for this), bike a few miles a day, do push-ups, etc. That way, you'll hold up better during band camp. I hope this helps and good luck!

get the water bag that straps to your back, so you can always have it with you and not have to leave it on the sidelines...i think you can find them at walgreens. that's the most important, but its also good to plot your sets on paper and use markers (old cd's) on the field to remember your spot.

You mean like a camel pack thing? Yeah, those are helpful. At our camp, we use water bottles called 'nathans'. Some advice? Be prepared to get hot and sweaty. Bring some sunglasses and a hat if you want. If not, wear sunscreen to avoid sunburn... Memorize your music? Although at camp, you'll probably go over it enough so that you'll learn it anyways. And the most important advice: have fun! You're a band geek and you will definitely make friends there. Soon, you'll realize that they are like your family smile

I'm just starting, too.
About the whole water thing- if it's really hot (which it probably is), drink water as much as you can, starting a couple days before you go to band camp. Sometimes you won't get much chance to drink your water (I know I haven't), and it really helps if you're already hydrated. Yeah, you'll be running to the bathroom all the time, but it's worth it.

1. There is no such thing as too much water 2. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, comfy sneakers. 3. Sleep whenever possible 4. Wear light colored clothes, tee shirts and shorts, no more layers than necessary. 5. Don't think about the fatigue or aches in the muscles you didn't know you posessed. Your best bet is to just calmy slip off to your happy place in your mind. 6. Don't drink milk/eat cheese, it'll give you a stomach ache in the heat.
