The chestnut mare wandered towards the family tree, glowing with pride as she searched for her daughter Vidia. She took in the sights, sounds, and smell of the forest in her glee. The sound of the river grew louder and soon she spied the pale mare looking over her own reflection again.
She shook her head with a smile. That girl seemed to be so vain at times, but she knew better than to believe that. "Vidia, dear," she called softly with a nicker. Her light blue eyes were sparkling when her daughter glanced up.

She tossed her mane from her face as she ambled towards her mother. She pressed her muzzle against the very black one that had passed down to her and smiled brightly to her mother. "You're finally up."
Ever had promised that they would go see a two-legger that could enhance her beauty even more with a few choice accessories. She really wanted to be flashy the next time she ran into Althalus. When her mother had remained asleep well after the sunrise, she worried they wouldn't get to go. "Are you feeling well?"

She saw the worry in her daughter's cyan eyes and grinned sheepishly. She hadn't realized she had lapsed from her normal routine. And there was that promise she had made...
She motioned for Vidia to follow her under the willow tree. Seeing the feathers of both her mate and other daughter always made her smile. She paused at the thought that came rushing to her mind upon seeing them. Soon, there would be more taking to the sky or running like the wind. Tawali would be proud to hear the news.
She lowered herself down on the ground, suddenly feeling weary again. Had it been this tiresome with her first two? She tucked her legs close to her stomach suddenly feeling very protective of herself.

She remained standing. They should be leaving now, not sitting in the shade of the family tree. Was it so hard to walk and talk at the same time? She sighed heavily in her frustration. It really was annoying when her mother was so laid back.
She rolled her eyes when there was nothing but silence. Obviously there was something her mother wanted to tell her, but she wasn't saying anything! She finally flopped down on the ground, albeit rather angrily. When there was still no verbal response, she decided she'd break the silence. "So are you dying or something?"

The sarcastic retort was what finally snapped her out of her daydream. "Hmmm? My, aren't you being antsy today," she jested. She didn't understand why it was so important for Vidia get all those accessories so soon. When she had first received hers, she had been so angry that her two-legger would do such a thing. Now, she didn't mind so much.
She flicked her tail across her stomach. "No, I'm not dying, but I do have something important I want to tell you." Again that distant glimmer appeared in her eyes as she smiled.

It looked like this would take awhile to get Ever to talk. She sighed and huffed at the look her mother seemed to be stuck in. "Mom? Mom. Mom! MOM!" Her mother finally looked at her and actually seemed to be focusing on the present. "What do you want to tell me?"

Right. She needed to quit letting the happy what-ifs get in the way this time. "Well, soon, there will be more than just you and your sister as my children." She rubbed her nose against her stomach. "I'm pregnant again with your siblings." Luckily she wasn't looking at her daughter then to see the absolute horror appear.

Her jaw had dropped at the news. No way. There was just NO WAY! How? When? This couldn't be happening, not after she finally was proud to be her mother's daughter. Not after she finally accepted her limitations. Sure, she still wasn't certain on her father's love, but now she was being... "You're replacing me?"
She had voiced the very thoughts that were rolling through her head. She stood up suddenly. She needed to fly, to be away from here so she could think. She needed Althalus.

Ever pushed herself off the ground and stared at the turned back of her daughter in confusion. That wasn't what she had meant. How in the heavens had she twisted it around to be that? "Vidia, I'm not repla--" She stopped as her daughter started to take several steps away from her. "Vidia!"

She broke off into a full gallop through the woods. She knew her mother would follow her and try to pretend that she wasn't doing just that. Again, Wild Wind's words rang through her ears. "Your parents didn't even realize what they would bring into this world. Abominations that have no place."
She stopped in her tracks and rubbed her face on her leg. She hadn't realized she'd been crying again. She turned her angry eyes on her mother. "So what? You're just going to bring more of my kind in this world that have no place in the races of Soquili to put a hoof in? More abominations that just sit on the fence? And what if they're loved less by their own father like me because they don't have wings?"
She shook her head as her mother started to protest. Of course she didn't know Vidia's true feelings on the whole thing. "No, mother. They will be outcasts. And dad will love them less if they have no wings."

She tried to take another step forward as her daughter took off once again into the woods. She shook her head slowly in protest. She had been so blind not to see the problems growing inside her daughter. And as much as she wanted to go seeking her out, she knew that she'd have to remain as the beacon. She'd always be there for her children, but now it was time for Vidia to go out in the world and learn on her own. Slowly, she made her way back to Evening Night's teepee.
