It started out innocently enough. Chris had brought a gigantic plate of cookies with him to school, no, well, actually he had brought TWO gigantic plates of cookies, but everyone knew what happened to the first one. They were never to be seen again. But he managed to share the second plate, and a talk about baking had started between him and Sophie. The next thing he knew he was asking her over to his house to bake something together.
Why he felt guilty about inviting a girl not Rory or Wisp over, he hadn't a clue. But it was too late to cancel the thing and his mother had gone out and gotten a ton of baking supplies, so here he was, waiting for Sophie to come over and wondering what he would tell Rory when she found out.
If she hadn't found out already, that was. But it wasn't as if she was his girlfriend, so he didn't know why he was so worried about it anyway.
The house was nice, and rather large, with a bright red door (Missy had painted it a few weeks ago). Inside there was a hallway which led to Chris's room on the left, the kitchen to the right and the living room on the other side of Chris's room. Tyler and Missy's room was upstairs.

Sophia, oblivious of Chris's concerns, was thrilled at their little baking arrangement. She had been wanting to learn to cook and bake for a while...ever since she came to realize that Rye wasn't very good at it. So baking with Chris was a highlight of her week. She had even dressed down for the occasion; a plain violet dress with closed-toe shoes with her very long hair braided into pigtails. She knew baking was likely to be messy and so she had, for once, been willing to look less than her best.
She found herself standing on Chris's doorstep eagerly, ahead of her energyetic mother for once. She knocked and waited, alternating between balancing on her heels and the balls of her toes.

The door opened and Chris moved out of the way, motioning her in. "Mom's in the kitchen," he told her. "She said she was gonna show us both how to cook stuff, because I wound up burning my last thing."
He had eaten it anyway, but oh well. "Um, does your mom wanna come, too?" he asked, looking around Sophie curiously.

Rye had finally caught up with her excited daughter. She flashed a white smile, waving her hand light, "Oh! No, don't worry, you kids have fun," she kissed the top of Sophia's head swiftly. "I'll be back to pick you up later Sophie." She then swept off.
For once Sophia really didn't mind. "Bye mom!" she called before slipping past Chris. She peered at the inside of the home curiously. She wondered where the kitchen was? She passed a glance at Chris, smiling a little, "What are we making?"

"Cake!" Missy said, poking her head out of the kitchen. "It's this way, Sophie, and I've got all the things we're going to need right here!" she added. "I figured we'd start with a box mix, since it's easiest. Have you done much baking before?"
"Ma's big on baking," Chris added. "But we use egg substitutes instead of eggs cuz we're vegetarians." He was still not used to applying that word to himself, even though he had grown up that way.

Sophia immediately slipped over to where Missy appeared and found her way into the kitchen. It already smelled faintly of baking powder and flower, since Chris had been baking with Missy beforehand. Sophie found she really liked the smell. It was soothing, in an odd way.
"Not really, Ma'am," she replied politely. She and Rye had made cookies a few times, but it was with the pre-made dough you stuffed in the oven.
"Vegetarian?" she asked, trying to remember exactly what that meant, "That means...you don't...eat meat right?" She had almost said that meant that they only ate vegetables, but that was silly, so that couldn't be it. She thought she had heard the bit about meat somewhere though.

"That's absolutely right," Missy said with a smile. "Chris, why don't you get out the vegetable oil and the egg beaters, and I'll show Sophie how to mix the cake batter."
"'k, Mom," Chris said obediently, getting the things she wanted. He was back to that not talking stage, since he didn't rightly know what to talk about. Sure, he liked to bake, but he wasn't that good at it. Most of the time he wound up burning the food unless his mom reminded him of the time.

"The batter...is like...the dough?" Sophia asked. She was a little confused though...the dough they used was always pretty sticky and not very mix-able. But...she supposed the dough had to come from somewhere. Were they making it? She supposed that was what the eggs and vegetable oil were for, though why they were putting vegetables in a cake was beyond her. She forced herself not to ask. Somehow she knew she'd look completely stupid.

"Something like that," Missy said with a smile. "Now we put the eggs and the vegetable oil, and the water into the mix."
"But we gotta measure it first," Chris said, grabbing a stool and pulling it to the counter, then climbing on top of it to measure out the liquids. "So there's not too much of it."
