If you haven't read the preface yet, you might not want to read any further...
SO... In the preface, Bella says that you can't really do anything when "the one you love is killing you."
HOLY HELL.
Possibilities:
a) Edward finally changes her and she panics
b) Jacob kills/almost kills her after she is changed
c) Bella ends up with a very dangerous "gift" that could kill even a Volturi member so...
1) The Volturi somehow trick Edward into killing her
2) The Volturi brainwash Edward
3) A Volturi member has the ability to take on the apearance of others, so he/she gets past Bella's defences by looking like Edward
d) Edward loses it

I read the preface too and i can't figure it out! but i do think that its either jacob trying to kill her or edward in the middle of changing her

I don't believe I can post all of it, but I will post a few meaningful parts.
"You could run from someone you feared, you could try to fight someone you hated...when you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options..."
I truly believe this is just Bella being changed. One other line is "If your life was all you had to give your beloved, how could you not give it?" This is pretty much how she feels about Edward, she doesn't think she has more to give.
Perhaps something happens, and maybe she is turned ahead of time, in which case she isn't prepared.
She also has to be turned because the quote for the book is :
Childhood is not from birth to a certain age and at a certain age
The child is grown, and puts away childish things.

I read the preface and I think edward accidently slips while trying to change her. I think this because in teh preface bella was talking about that she's had a lot of near death experiences and this time she can't resist because someone she loves is killing her. Ahhh, I will probably go crazy waited for the book to come out. I am so hyper right now. Oh, and jake might kill her, by accident 'cause he loves her. And if Jake kills Bella I think it will be because jake cann't control his rage. So many possibilities. Which is the truth?

anywho, back on topic...
I agree with Snow fairy... I think Edward gets a little carried away while changing her and Bella knows, and is scared to death! sounds good to me! YAY!!!
OMW. I am going insane with IMPATIENCE! I might end up killing someone in the suspense! ugh. I am not feeling like a happy camper at the moment...
EDIT::: when I said, "sounds good to me" it wasn't that it was good that Bella almost dies. It was good that I sorta straightened it all out in my head with all the theories! Make sense? I have no will for Bella to die, unless Edward comes for me afterwards...

I think I probably change my theories daily now... I think that Jacob is trying to kill her. I think someone bit him, which turned him into some weird, crazy werewolf-vampire mix, and he probably can't control himself so he might try to kill Bella.
Stephenie Meyer was vague in a FAQ once about whether vampires could bite werewolves since she "didn't want to spoil the fourth book."

I actuslly think bella is either fighting jacob or edward is being carried away, or (heres the one that goes off the deepend) major or. bella is speaking hypothetically.... jacob might have come back after bella was changed or somthing, and it is tearing her apart on teh inside. or she could be speaking about herself killing but that doesnt line up at all with the preface...

Maybe Bella gets attack by Edward when he changing her. I can't be Jacob because he went somewhere in Canada after the third book.
I hope it isn't Edward, he my favorite character.
