I just thought I would pose this question to all of the cosplayers here, seeing as the family friendly content really puts a damper on who we can cosplay as.

I think it's sort of silly, really. I mean, it's good that they are thinking of the little ones now a days in terms of what can be cosplayed and what can't, but at the same time, it's sort of insane. There are TONS of different genres of anime out there. To say that you cannot dress up as a character from a genre that isn't kid-friendly is rediculous. It's just part of the whole culture really.

But I do find it so adorable when parents bring their little kid to the con with them all dressed up.

So what's your opinion? Discuss!

hmm....I think that we should be able to cosplay as whatever we wish to be, although at times certain cosplays dont flatter specific people, but oh well. Costumes are costumes, as long as people arent acting inappropriatly or anything its fine.

On the topic of small children dressing up in cosplay at AX05 I saw this family dressed as characters from cowboy bebop, and there was a little girl dressed up as Ed, she was so cute! I also saw a princess peach, she was adorable as well.

The cons I have been to have always had little kids at them. This didn't stop people from wearing skimpy costumes or costumes that were bloody or gore-y. I think its just something that parents are going to have to expect when they take their kids.

I mean they still seal Hentai and Yoai/Yuri, the just say that you need to be over 18 to look at it. That doesn't really bug me any. And obviously having kids at Expo hasn't stopped them from having Asian Pornstar type people there for like 3 years now.

Dress how you're going to dress. I mean, as long as its not counted as indecent exposure by law.

Heck, having kids around hasn't stopped Man-Faye has it ^.^

yes, i do like how the cons want the family friendly thing, because some people, just... * shudders.* they get away that sort of stuff anyway, but i what i ask of people is to be decent. I saw a girl walking around a con in the smipist binkini in existance. While, I also saw a cute little boy dressed up as Sasuke with his older brother who was Itachi, at the same con., it was uber cute. 4laugh

hm... seeing as I'm still minor (13) and have to have an adult to accompany me, it's best (in my situation at least) for there to be more controlled cons. (but not to the point of no bloody cosplays, cause I want to do Kurarin darnit!! xd )

Plus, I mean plenty of people can walk around with "I heart yaoi/yuri/etc" signs (at some cons at least) while some people might find that offensive, :/ meh, I say if it doesn't break any Gov. laws, then it's pretty much fine. o-o (which one being, that pornographic materials being shown to minors is illegal, so it's not as much of a "we don't want kids to see where babies come from" it's more of "if we allow hentai merchandise to be sold without sealing it then it'll be OUR hides getting thrown in prision.") neutral

on the subject of kids, I saw this COMPLETELY ADORABLE Goku one time, he couldn'tve been older then 5 and he even had a tail!! >w<

Just because a con is kid friendly has never stopped the attention whores from wearing their skimpy a** costumes or from the loudmouthed yaoi fangirls from doing indecent things out in the middle of the convention.

Personally, I don't care what you wear, but for god's sake be reasonable about it. Don't have just an elastic strap covering your boobs or something or run around in a thong bikini. Doesn't matter how good you look, have SOME kind of decency. If not for the kids for the rest of us that have to put up with your stupid attention whorish ways. Actually try to make a costume you know.

Oh, and if you're going to wear something skimpy DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE FANBOYS! You asked for it by wearing something skimpy and you knew it, so don't b***h. Its annoying when some chick gets all this attention because she's showing some skin not because she put effort into a costume or how well its made.

Seriously. and even the skimpy-er ones that are actually intricate costumes (they exist ^.^) don't get the attention because they are intricate, they get it because of all the flesh that is shown.

What has the world come to.

Well, I've been to family friendly conventions, and still see people dressed uber scantilly. Most of the time with parents who like anime and bring their kids... they don't really care too much XD

I think it'S fun to see kids at cons ^^ I went to Otakon in 2003 and saw the cutest little Yuna and the coolest looking mini Alucard! The kid had the attitude to boot! xd lol

But I do admit putting up restrictions on cosplays is pushing it a bit far. I do wish some cosplayers would cover up a bit cause there's skimpy and plain indecent but still.

My family comes with me to conventions sometimes. For the small short ones at least.

I find this idea as increasingly stupid. I had someone tell me to put more clothes on when I was in a Kasumi costume. I was more than 3/4 covered and was stil being told to put more on. I find it offensive. I put a lot of hard work into my costumes and if parents don't want their kids to see what anime has to offer than why in the hell are they letting them watch it in the first place and why are they taking their kids to a convention second? I think it's stupid and really annoying. I will admit that there are some totally nasty costumes out there that aren't even convention appropriate but how is it that an FFX-2 Rikku can walk around but a Kasumi can't? People need to figure out what's appropriate and what's not before they go around making everything "family friendly"

I really like what No Brand Con does; they have 18+ stuff be in seperate "adults only" rooms where they have to be carded. If people want to have crazy Hentai parties or whatever, then they are allowed to in the privacy of their own rooms.

As far as Cosplay goes, there's always public decency laws that you have to follow, but I've never seen or heard of anyone been reprimanded for an outfit based on the Anime, etc that it's from. I think people should use common sense in public, but if the outfit is publicly decent, I don't think it should matter who or what character it is or is from.

its fun to have kids around.

to me the rule is simply "what would you want kids to see, or not see, on your own home?"

they understand the difference between fantasy and reality, i feel. they know what "make believe" is.

so let's make sure they know this is make believe, and they are safe. and then express ourselves, within limits.
