RANK INFORMATION
Please note that we do expect higher ranking lions to be roleplayed more than the lesser ones, as their jobs are a vital part of the Firekin system. We encourage you to go for a rank that you feel you are capable of working with.
Any high-ranking character that is inactive for an extended period of time will be demoted unless a good reason is given.
NOTES - Pregnant Firekin in physically straining ranks will be relieved from their duties until their cubs are born and weaned. - Characters who do not put in a rank request or post in the apprenticeship thread will be defaulted as hunter / huntress when they come of age - AIM / MSN RPs are encouraged! - Every member of the Firekin pride, no matter what rank, is expected to RP on occasion. - Any rank can be held by either a female or male.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE COUNCIL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regent & Regentess RP REQUIREMENT: High
Obviously, the title King and Queen suggests royalty and as the Motoujamii-simo are making royalty void, they themselves must take new titles.
The Regent and Regentess are both equal in status. But it must be remembered that though they are the highest rank, important decisions must be made within the council. Important decisions include things such as;
- Punishments - Battle strategies etc…
However, with smaller decisions, such as; - Promotion - Allowing new litters etc…can be made by the Regent or Regentess without calling a council meeting. - Joining rogues
If at any time, the council cannot agree on a decision, the Regent or Regentess must make the choice. They have the final word, though they must listen and take into consideration the council’s arguments at all times.
Any rogues will be brought straight to the Regent or Regentess for initial questioning. Or any members with problems must first approach the Regent or Regentess. If the problem is serious enough, the rulers will take it to the council.
The Regent and Regentess will also take part in any battle that takes place and are expected to keep strong and fit to set an example for the whole pride.
Magistrate RP REQUIREMENT: High
The magistrates are equal in rank to the General, though they govern social decisions rather than ones involving the army. They are highly respected and wise individuals that are looked upon for guidance by the Regent and Regentess. Their attendance at council meetings is mandatory unless IC reasons prevent it. (ie: injured in a fight or close to giving birth etc…)
They are the eyes of the Regent and Regentess and can call a council meeting if they witness something they feel needs to be discussed. Ex: spotting a stranger on the borders.
Ideally, there will be one female magistrate and one male magistrate, both from different backgrounds so that they can give varied input at meetings – this cannot always be the case, however. Magistrates can resign from their post at any time and a successor will be chosen by the remaining council. Magistrates can be young or old, but no younger than adolescent.
General RP REQUIREMENT: High - Inspection of newborn cubs, attendance at council meetings, meetings with Sergeant; frequency unknown
The General is equal in rank to the magistrates and governs the army rather than the social problems. S/he is revered and respected by the army and holds an incredible amount of power in that sense. The General must also attend council meetings unless IC reasons prevent him/her from doing so.
The General has command over the Moutoujamii-simo army and has a close working relationship with the Sergeant. If another battle comes to the Firekin Lands than the General is responsible for arranging the army and bringing victory to the lands. The General, quite simply, holds an incredible amount of power where war is concerned and only has to answer to the Regent and Regentess.
The General must not only be strong, s/he must also know the terrain, the abilities of his soldiers/guards and have knowledge of fighting tactics to turn even the worst of situations around.
The General is also in charge of another important task. When a new litter is born, the General must meet with the family and observe the cubs. This must be done just before they enter their juvenile stage. If any of the cubs show promising signs of becoming soldiers/guards then s/he will take their names to the Sergeant so that they can be recruited and trained as apprentices.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE OFFICERS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brigadier RP REQUIREMENT: HIGH
A Brigadier's job is to support the General of the Firekin Army (currently Azarax RPed by Moonrazor). They are strong individuals who are gifted in the art of war and, in particular, strategy and tactics. This would be considered a promotion step for current officers or a rank for an extremely gifted warrior. Brigadiers will command authority and have good control of their own temper, being dependable and cool in even the most difficult of situations. They answer directly to the General and can, on occasion, be asked to attend council meetings.
They meet with the Captains on a regular basis to look over training schedules and patrolling schedules as well as visit new litters to look for any cubs who show signs of becoming promising warriors.
Often, if you wish to speak with the General, you will have to go through the Brigadier first.
Sergeant RP REQUIREMENT: Medium
The Sergeant is closer to the frontline work than the General in that it’s his/her job to make sure everyone is in top condition and fitness. It’s the Sergeant who relays the Generals orders and makes sure that the two Captains are doing what they are told. He or she keeps the order of things in battle, so needs to be strong and reliable.
The Sergeant’s main job is to take the names of the new recruits from the General and make sure they are tested. A test involves a mock-duel between a possible apprentice and a soldier/guard. If the apprentice puts up a good fight then the Sergeant will accept them as an apprentice. Who the cubs are apprenticed to depends on their natural ability level.
Once the cub has been apprenticed it is the Sergeants job to make sure that he or she is being trained properly.
Captain RP REQUIREMENT: Medium
Both Captains will have a close working relationship with the Sergeant and answer to him/her.
The Captain of the Guard will be in charge of the guards. S/he will join them in training, work them until they are exhausted and make sure that they all do their part. S/he will be in charge of giving them their rota, making sure that there are guards on the borders at every time of day and night.
If there is a section of the desert not being watched by a pair of eyes then it’s the Captain who gets it in the neck so he or she will have to be tough and authoritative.
The Captain of Offence will be in charge of the soldiers. Like his counterpart, s/he will join them in training, work them hard and make sure that they become the best fighters that they can be. They do not have a rota, like the Guards, but they do have gruelling training schedules that they are expected to do almost every day. S/he must make sure every soldier and apprentice is complying with the rota and not slacking off.
Captains can come across as quite harsh and cold; apprentices will probably find them terrifying at first. However, Captains, though tough should be regarded as a friend, as a parent figure, someone who can be approached and joked with.
Lieutenant RP Requirement: Medium
The Lieutenants act as the second-in-command for the Captain of Offense and the Captain of the Guard. They will apply themselves to helping ease the workload from their superiors by regularly patrolling to check up on the soldiers and guards and taking on small groups for training exercises.
If anything is amiss or not working it is their job to report this to the Captain.
Lieutenants are picked out and promoted from the guards/soldiers by the Captain. Being higher up the rank they are therefore authorised to give orders to the troops. However, these orders will be ones passed down from above and not of their own making.
Lieutenants are more likely to be promoted to Captain later on in their 'career'.
It must be noted that if there is a change of Captain, the Lieutenant could be replaced if the new appointed Captain so wishes. This is due to the need of a close working relationship.
Corporal: RP REQUIREMENT: MEDIUM
The next stage up the rank ladder for soldiers and guards. A corporal will show leadership qualities and have proved themselves in their loyalty and their strength. Corporals will be expected to provide assistance to both the apprentices and to the fully-fledged soldiers and guards, providing assistance to the Captains / Lieutenants where necessary.
It is commonplace for a Corporal to have one apprentice at any given time.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE ARMY ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Battlemaster RP REQUIREMENT: HIGH - Must win or tie in 10 duels to attain this ranking.
Battlemasters represent the top fighters in the firekin. These fighters have gone above and beyond simply making a career choice- these are lions who love the thrill of battle. They are able to see that with ever battle, victory or loss, there are lessons to be learned and skills to be honed.
Battlemasters make up the front line during assaults, and frequently take on apprentices. In fact, it isn't uncommon for battlemasters to serve as mentors to young guards and soldiers into adulthood, passing on the lessons they've learned to the younger generations.
Soldiers RP REQUIREMENT: Low - Occasional training and interaction with their apprentice (if they have one)
Soldiers are the main bulk of the Firekin, deadly warriors who have learned to work together. They are exceptional in their skill, trained and honed to perfection. They are quick, can follow orders without question and can spring into action as soon as an alarm is called.
Soldiers may sometimes be chosen to have mock-duels with hopeful apprentices.
The more talented soldiers are granted apprentices to train under them. The apprentice becomes almost like their own cub. They have an odd sort of relationship, a kind of bully-each-other relationship. Soldiers normally spar with their apprentices, teaching them all that they know. The more apprentices a soldier has, the more respected they are.
The more active the soldier the more likely they are to have one or more apprentice.
Guards RP REQUIREMENT: Low - Occasional training and interaction with their apprentice (if they have one)
Guards are in charge of patrolling the borders on a rota system. Some Guards will be expected to patrol through the night. If they see a stranger on the borders they must give a warning call to the Soldiers who will come to investigate.
Guards are trained to be evasive. To be quick, to dodge. In this case they must have great stamina, agility and an ability to keep out of trouble. However, they are also taught fighting skills in case they are needed in a fight or need to hold off an attacker by force – if it is necessary.
Guards may sometimes be chosen to have mock-duels with hopeful apprentices.
Exceptional guards are given apprentices to care for and teach.
The more active the guard the more likely they are to have one or more apprentice.
Apprentices RP REQUIREMENT: Low
Cubs will be observed by the General just before they enter their juvenile stage. If they show promise of becoming a guard or soldier, the General will take their name back to the Sergeant where they will be apprenticed to a suitable partner.
Normally a cub will be apprenticed to a soldier or guard. However, if there are exceptional talents, they may be apprenticed to a Captain or even a Sergeant. Occasionally, if the cub is really promising s/he will become an apprentice to the General but only when they come of age (adolescent).
When they reach their juvenile stage they are brought forward for a mock-duel and if they prove themselves worthy they are accepted as an apprentice and given a mentor whom they will train with until they are an adolescent.
Apprentices are put through gruelling training and are certainly not given an easy time. They are worked as hard as the adults, expected to perform great tasks and work to their best abilities. Those who try hard are awarded. If anyone fails they are demoted and will grow to become a hunter or huntress or one of the other social ranks.
Being an apprentice is a hard life, but it comes with the possibilities of recognition and promotion.
It must be noted that apprentices do not train all the time and also have time to just hang out and have fun.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ THE SPIES ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Spy Master RP REQUIREMENT: High
The Spy Master is perhaps the most interesting and challenging of all roles in the pride. Unlike most, the Spy Master has to be able to function on his own. This means having earned the trust of the Regents in order to do so. The perfect candidate would be good at being secret and subtle with the traits of a guard and a soldier.
A Spy Master not only needs to understand the workings and goings on of the Firekin but must also be familiar with the outside world and its workings as well.
Daily duties would involve checking up on the Watchers - secret spies operating inside of the pride as well as on the outside. He'd also need to familiarise himself with the youngsters, needing to groom any cubs deemed suitable for the task of spying. It would also be a good character trait to have a good memory, to remember where the Watchers are posted - as nothing can be written down in order to preserve secrecy.
He would also serve as a partially diplomatic adviser to the pride.
Watchers RP REQUIREMENT: Medium
Watchers are, to put it simply, spies of the Firekin. They can operate inside, keeping an eye on members suspected of breaking rules or plotting crimes. (for example - the newly joined Safi). Alternatively, they can be posted outside of the pride, keeping an eye on neighbours or prides believed to be stirring trouble.
They answer to the Spy Master and obey any orders given by him. They are also hand-picked by him as cubs / juveniles and are taught the ways of secrecy and disguise.
Day-to-day life will have the spies acting out 'false' jobs. They may go about seemingly regular hunting duties, whilst keeping an eye on the members there. They generally stick to the less demanding roles so as not to drain themselves, which means they would rarely be given a position over guard / solder / hunter etc...
Any Watcher who reveals his identity as a spy will be demoted and never be allowed to climb into the ranks.
Watchers must recieve IC interviews prior to becoming one.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SOCIAL RANKS ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hunters & Huntresses RP REQUIREMENT: Low
Hunters and Huntresses are obviously some of the most important lions in the pride. They provide the food for the pride and know the movements of the herd. Cubs that have not been selected to become apprenticed to guards or soldiers (or cubs who did not want to be apprenticed) can join the hunting parties when they hit juvenile to observe and then take part when they are adolescents.
Skilled at teamwork and silence, these lions may sometimes be selected for spying and stalking if need be and there’s always the possibility of them becoming a magistrate if they have the mind for it.
Storytellers/Teachers RP REQUIREMENT: High
Storytellers are often injured or elderly lions and lionesses, those who have retired from battle and wish to share their knowledge. However, it is also quite acceptable for the children of a storyteller to apprentice themselves to their parent and learn the stories and knowledge so that they too can become knowledgeable. In fact, it is highly encouraged that younger lions take this role.
The role of a storyteller is extremely important, in fact on an OOC note, we have come to realise that the story tellers should actually be far higher up on the social scale, which they will be in the revised ‘rank tree’. They have an incredible amount of respect and knowledge and will hold a lot of responsibility in their paws.
Not only are the storytellers given the job of teaching the cubs and juveniles when they are not learning their other skills, they are also given the job of educating lions in the quarantine period and new rogues who join. They are enforcing the law and way of life that is set down by the Regent and Regentess, making sure that no one forgets and upholds what is expected of them so as to keep as little confusion as possible.
Not only that; storytellers are also in charge of teaching any cubs whose pelt does not conform to the accepted colours of the pride. These cubs are taken from their mother, once weaned, and prepared by the storytellers to accept their fate as a wanderer so that there are no ill feelings towards the pride. (See Huria rank for more information)
Exceptional Storytellers also have the chance to be elected as a magistrate.
Historians RP REQUIREMENT: High
Historians are generally intellectual Firekin who seem not to favour the more physical roles in the pride, those who like to sharpen their minds rather than their claws. They are equal to the storytellers and are given a number of important duties - some of which overlaps with the storytellers.
Their main duty is to teach new firekin about the history of the pride, about the time before the divide and after. They strive for facts and maintain as much truth as possible in their accounts of the past. They give lectures to young and old alike. Because of this they are respected members of the group and are often referred to as Keepers of Knowledge. They must learn all aspects of Firekin history and culture so that nothing is forgotten.
To help future generations of Historians remember significant events, the historians record important events by painting images on the stone slabs. These pictures need to be maintained and protected from the harsh desert climate. Events to be recorded can include the births of new lions, the joining of new members, battles won, changes in the council.
And whilst they keep the knowledge, they must also protect it and make sure it is not given lightly to anyone. They must also make sure that none approaches the 'paintings of history' without seeking their permission first.
Cub sitters RP REQUIREMENT: Low - Occasional cub sitting RPs
Cub sitters are lions and lionesses who do not want to be involved in battle. They are more peaceful and nurturing and help out new parents by taking care of their young whilst they are out on hunting parties or performing other duties.
They don’t teach or train, they’re job is to make sure that cubs are happy and content. They play, laugh and joke and pretty much keep the cubs happy until their parents come back. The cub sitters become extended parents to the cubs.
It is possible for a cub sitter to be elected as a magistrate.
Medic RP REQUIREMENT: Medium
In the middle of battle, a good medic can be worth as much as the most valiant warrior. For the firekin, being a medic is not about being close to the earth or avoiding conflict. Medics relish the call of battle, but also realize that they must preserve their numbers in order to win a war. Medics themselves must be combat trained, as they are expected to defend themselves and their patients should the Simo ever go to war again.
Medics often oversee sparring matches, and educate fighters on the most lethal ways to kill. They may also be present at births to ensure all cubs enter the world safely.
Because the desert is sparse on herbs and healing remedies, most firekin methods are somewhat crude. On rare occasions when a situation is dire, medics will leave the motoujamii and seek out plants from surrounding savannas.
Water-seekers RP REQUIREMENT: Low
Becoming a Water-Seeker means having a natural instinct for remembering the lay of the land, ensuring that one does not get lost away from the perimeter of the pride. Knowing weather patterns and natural landmarks is an essential part of traversing the desert safely.
Water-Seekers spend a lot of time away from the pride, scouring the desert for water sources. They are able to collect dew and also cultivate water-holding cacti for emergency supplies. They usually travel in a small group so as to avoid being caught out in the open alone. For the dangers lie not only in the harsh environment, but also in outside rogues looking to cause trouble.
They need to be survivalists, with strong hearts and minds, able to adapt to their surroundings with ease.
Trackers RP REQUIREMENT: Events Only
Trackers are the ultimate hunters. Spending days or even weeks out in the desert, these lions are survivalists through and through. Trackers are tasked with numerous jobs- but their primary duties are to monitor herd numbers and to find lost members out in the waste. No one knows the desert better then they do.
Because the desert is constantly shifting, they need to be cunning. They must employ all the craft of a water-seeker, coupled with the finesse of a spy. Most have some basic medical training to deal with injured lions.
They are also play a vital role in managing rogue populations on the borders. They will report when they have grown too numerous, or even escort failed duelists out of the pridelands. Hurias are often paired with a tracker to gain basic survival skills for their life abroad.
This rank may only be obtained during special mini game events. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ GENERAL ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adolescents RP REQUIREMENT: Low - Occasional RP – in their chosen path and general
At this stage in a young Firekin’s life, they should have fully embraced the path that they’ve been set on in their juvenile stage. This is the time when they come of age and become a fully-fledged; hunter, guard, soldier, magistrate etc... They are considered young adults and are given the responsibilities of one.
Juveniles RP REQUIREMENT: Low- Occasional RP
Juveniles begin their training in their chosen path. Those juveniles who have not yet decided their path are often made to partake in hunting observation until they decide. Options for juveniles in this situation are between storytelling, cub sitting or hunting. Apprentices to the Guards and Soldiers will already have begun their training by the time they reach this stage.
Cubs RP REQUIREMENT: Low - Occasional RP
Cubs who are not chosen to become an apprentice to a guard or soldier have other options that they may take. This time in their life is to simply have fun and learn all the basics!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ MISC. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Huria RP REQUIREMENT: Low
Huria is the title given to a cub that is born of a colour different from; red, black, white. Once the cubs are weaned and no longer dependant on their mother for food they are moved to a separate den that feeds into one of the storyteller’s dens. Here they are raised and taught by the storytellers about survival and all the skills they will need out in the wild. They are encouraged to hunt, to fight and taught about their ancestry which has led to their odd colouring. These cubs are treated very gently and kindly so as not to bring any hard feelings. Whilst it is not encouraged, Huria can mix with the other Firekin cubs in play.
Parents are not cut off from the Huria completely and can visit when they like, even get involved with the teaching when they are off-duty.
When the cubs reach a stage where they can survive alone, a small celebration is held compiling of the cubs’ immediate family and the Story teller. The Regent or Regentess (sometimes both) will also attend to give the child a final blessing before s/he leaves.
Unless a Huria elects to take on an ambassador role, they are not expected to return.
Huria do not need to be given traditional firekin names.
Ambassador RP REQUIREMENT: Low
This role is an optional one taken on by a Huria just before they make their departure into the outside world. Although this role does not give the character breeding rights or a permanent home in the pride, it does allow them to keep the connection to the pride they were born into.
Their main roles are; to keep others out of Firekin business and to report back on the goings on of the outside world so that the Firekin never get taken by surprise. The likely issues to bring back would be along the lines of plagues and war etc...
They may also carry messages back and forth between family members that any pride members may have living outside of the desert.
