Ona lay pressed to Rehema's side. His shaggy mane falling in his face helping to block out the creeping sun's rays. He had never slept so well in his life.

Not only did he have his new love with him, he also had his dearest friend and a home to call his own. Yes, he'd have to find a den for him and Rehema to stay eventually, to make them a proper family. Family was something he wanted. He was very traditional like that. He was a simple lion but what he wanted was good and strong.

He wanted love and friendship and peace.

He also wanted cubs.

And as he stirred the thought of those wishes were on his mind and he leaned over, purring, to give Rehema a lick across the top of her muzzle. Things had changed so quickly, so quickly he could hardly believe they had happened at all.

But here it all was.

Rehema purred softly as her mate's tongue roused her from her light sleep. She cracked an eye open and reached a paw out to playfully push at his cheek. "Well good morning then... I trust you slept well?"

She certainly did. Even with Malik's snoring the three of them bundled up together was more than she could ask for. Her mate and her best friend, her sleeping in-between the two males. It was almost comical.

"Very." He rumbled in response. "I'm home, for the first time, I feel like I'm at home. I'm not alone anymore." He snuggled closer, reaching over to rest his chin affectionately across her neck. Her scent warmed his heart and her fur tickled his nose delightfully.

"Everything's perfect, right?" He sighed. "Sad really, if life is perfect, how can it get any better than this?"

He purred. "I'm so glad you're going to be staying with me. And now, now you're a proper Ela'wadiyian." He laughed, casting a glance at Malik. "Even him, for now at least." He still hoped the big gold lion wouldn't leave.

"I ain't a proper nothin'." Malik yawned as he rolled himself to his back and stretched his paws out in front of him, working his shoulders and back. He hated it when they did this... as good of a couple as the two were, decent lions were trying to get some sleep in. Malik never appreciate being roused. "Don't get'cher hopes up, kiddo."

Rehema turned her head and licked gently at Ona's mane, grooming it back away from his face. "Life can always get better. I'm convinced there's never a limit on how good or bad things can get." She glanced sideways towards Malik, "And unfortunately...he's right."

"I can't settle so long as I know mah bruddahs out there bein' treated bad. Ain't right." He rolled back to his belly and yawned, his large tongue rolling from his mouth as he did so.

His heart sank. So there was a down side to all of this. Malik wsa going to leave and it saddened him to think it. Who would help him grow stronger now? Who could he tease and talk to when things got rough?

He had Rehema, but it was nice having a guy around too, just in case he had anything sensitive to talk about. Not that Malik had been sensitive last time he'd tried to have a private chat.

He blushed at the thought of the past event.

He purred as Reh licked the mane from his face and twitched an ear. "I wish you wouldn't go Malik, but you must, I know. It's not right that lions are doing that sort of thing. I'd do the same in your position." He sighed and leaned against the chocolate female.

"When are you leaving anyway?"

"Leavin' tonight." Malik sat himself up and shook out his mane, fluffing it out once more. "Best get th' cool of th' day on my back an' give me all night tah get some distance behind me. Longer I sit 'round 'ere, longer my bruddah'll have tah wait."

Rehema shook her head a bit. "He's been spoiling for a fight for a long time."

Ona tried his best not to look dissapointed but he couldn't help it. He liked having Malik around. Things would be a lot quieter without him and...well...he'd miss him.

But if he felt that way then Rehema must have been feeling low too, though she didn't seem to show it. Weren't they like brother and sister? Looking out for one another? He wasn't sure what to say. He just nodded and stepped closer to her, using her for strength. It was hard, saying goodbye.

"Will you come back to see us again?"

Rehema leaned her shoulder lightly against Ona's as he came close, though there'd be no other indication of her own discomfort with the situation. It was dangerous... all they'd heard of the Firekin for the years of their youth was that they were vicious monsters...

"I'll be back." He noddded a bit, "Dunno if it'll be tah stay. 's quiet 'round 'ere an...no offense or nothin, but the lot of ya are bitty little things. Great if yer a femmie like Reh." He nudged her with a paw. "But a big guy like me feels kinda outta place."

He smiled, but the smile was sad.

This was it then, the end of an era. After today the three of them would never be quite the same again. He took a step forward, laughing quietly.

"You do stand out, that's for sure. The place won't ever forget you, Malik. You can be sure of that. And you'd be welcome back to visit us anytime, remember that, okay?" He swallowed back the sadness. "You've got friends here for life."

He tried to lighten his tone a little. "It sure is going to be different not having you around. Whose going to wake us up and teach me how to fight and roar like a proper lion, now?"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 11:04 am

"Don't think I'mma forget 'bout you both." He threw a large paw out and pulled Ona into a tight bear hug. "I'mma come back either way. Frequent visits n' all dat. I'm gonna wanna be seein' little Reh's and Ona's runnin' 'round. Ya got a pride tah re-populate ya?"

He smirked and released the little lion once more.

"Besides." Rehema cut in, "If you don't learn to roar and fight like a proper lion you've got me to answer to." She lifted her chin and shot a coy grin over to her mate. "And I can take Malik any day."

"Ya wish..."

No. Don't cry. Don't cry!

As Malik pulled him into a hug Ona felt the tears prickling in his eyes. He didn't want to feel sad. After all, he'd always known that Malik was going to go after his brother. It just seemed too soon, like everything was happening too fast. He sniffled and nodded, not trusting his voice to speak firmly.

Then he gave a shaky, watery smile and nodded again. "I'll do my best." Then blushing as Malik's comment sunk in he gave a nervous laugh.

"Re-populate...? Malik it's too soon to talk about that!" But either way, if it happened sooner or later, there'd be no complaints from him.

Malik roared in laughter. "Now now, calm down little guy. 's what mates do right? Nothin' tah be ashamed of. none of us would be 'ere if our folks didn't think the same thing."

Rehema chuckled softly, her eyes narrowing slightly as a thin smile graced her maw. "There's nothing to worry about..."

He wriggled with embarrassment. It was just like Malik to get one last tease in before he went. He shuffled closer to Rehema, ears drooped bashfully.

"Whatever happens, we'll be fine." He replied after a moment. "But you better take care of yourself Malik. You're big and strong but by the sounds of those Firekin, they're big and strong too. Watch yourself, okay? You wouldn't want Rehema and me to worry, would you?"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 07, 2008 11:19 am

Malik chuckled, "You've never seen me really fight, kid. I chaised a firekin intah th' desert a'fore my mane even started showin' on my head. I'm not 'fraid of 'nothin' an' if I'mma die, it's gonna be at the claws of three of 'em."

He stood himself up and let loose a wild roar, echoing from the rocks and canyons of the landscape.

"Showoff..."

Ona'raha wouldn't say goodbye. This was not goodbye.

It was the end of their old friendship but a beginning of a new. They would see him again, he knew that. Nothing could crush such a fiery spirit as Malik and he doubted that anything could stand in the lion's way when a family member's life was concerned.

He wasn't sure what to say to Malik, but decided in the end that words didn't matter.

He'd return and they could talk and laugh and tease one another just as they had before.

He blinked back the tears and threw up his head to roar as well. It was quieter, lighter in tone than the golden lion's, but it held a note of farewell that he wouldn't dare to speak in any other way.
