With weary bones and a heavy heart Lilith let out a long wayward sigh that wafted the night air out of her lungs. She cast her emerald eyes over to the horizon, the moon's gaze reflecting back into her glimmered orbs. She was tired, but there was no rest for the wicked. Besides, without Karrim at her side how could she ever expect to find that same comfort and warmth that lulled her to sleep each and every night. Another sigh escaped her maw. The fight was almost over. She could feel it. Her place was never at the position of leadership. This pack, these wolves...they were not meant to follow her. She had only wanted an out for her and her pups. Now? Now she had a whole mulitude of wolves under her paws and the effort to keep them happy and in line was being to catch up with her. What was she to do when it consumed her completely?

-----

Piper strode across the threshold of the Outlands and Gomorrah, her heart as high as her tail was. She'd been all over in her short life. She'd even stood up to another alpha -- truthfully, she'd lost in the little face off, but there was always next time!

Her entire life, which consisted of almost 10 months, was spent wonderfully. If she died tomorrow, she'd be in bliss... Well, nearly. She could've lived with a few boytoys...and the overthrowing of an alpha or two, even if it was just for the rush, wouldn't be bad, right? Not for this pup.

But the truth was, she wasn't dying. She was strong, her heart racing blood through her body even as she hopped a briar and landed hard on her forepaws. She stopped in midstride, raising her head to scent the air.

Lilith...

The smell was obvious. She reeked of female, age, hate, love, mixed feelings, sadness, exhaustion...and leadership. The scents ran together and it took her a little bit to decypher each one...

A grin -- a wicked grin -- crawled upon her sly maw as she stepped forwards, coming upon the black and gray grizzled femme with one intention and one intention only.

A fight.

-----

Lilith continued to stare at the endscape of nothingness as she swivelled an ear back, hearing the smallest hint of a sound but not thinking to turn around completely. She was too wrapped up in her own emotions and thoughts to really realize someone was nearby. However soon the smell of youth assualted her nostrils and she realized a smaller femme must be nearby. She smiled warmly as she turned around, recognizing one of the scents as offspring of Gerda but not knowing the name to attach it to. "It's late for a stroll," she said wearily. *

-----

Piper wasn't sure what to expect... She'd never really talked to the alpha pair face-to-face; just knew of them through Tabansi and her sisters. Now...she was going to face Lilith on her own. No one knew her wherabouts, let alone knew she had just snuck up on the Gomorrah alpha. Her heart gave a flip but she kept herself in check: head up, tail up, chest puffed out.

She was jumpy from adrenaline and when Lilith turned around, she jumped back, hackles raised as if she was a black cat on halloween. Golden eyes watched as a smile rose on the fae's lips, a smile that connected to her eyes. Pi relaxed slightly. "I'm not exactly strolling," she murmured. "I've been told you're the alpha of this pack. Correct?"

It was then that the older alpha realized what the other was going to do. Trying to die. Piper was young, and thus strength had her at an advantage. But, Lilith was known for her burly size and unique fighting techiniques. Besides....she did not want to hurt the girl. But her curiosity was mounted. She raised herself at full height on all fours, looking down upon the teen with an air of superiority. "You are not mistaken," she said calmly, rationally. She sniffed the air, smelt the traitory in the winds. "You have come here to dethrone me?" she asked, stepping up to the other. "Why"

-----

Piper tensed as the female stood... Damn, she was big. Bigger than the half-adult she herself was. Part of her wanted to tuck tail, to nibble on Lilith's jaw and beg forgiveness. But no. Her pride, a pride that got her into all kinds of trouble, kept her joints locked although her muscles quivered a bit. She had to keep her head. If she bowed out now...who knew. She didn't need to be viewed as "the wolf who started a fight and ran". A growl rose up her throat at the thought.

She shook her head and stood tall as well, paws widespread, all senses ready for a blow. Paranoia set in and she worried that Lilith was playing. That Karrim would come from the brush and rip her a new one. She sniffed the air, but there was no scent of him. She forced herself to focus, staring hard into the alpha's eyes.

"Why?" Piper gave a small chuckle. "You've no idea how I was raised. Our father didn't stick around to help Gerda raise us. My sister Abital is more interested in treasure hunting and Beauty wouldn't take your place unless it meant she'd be forever bald. She's more worried about beauty...the name fits, no?"

By now, she was relaxed. Lilith knew this, perhaps. But it didn't matter. Piper forged on.

"Gerda let her own children run her. If you go watch them, even at this minute, she treats her son as if he were an alpha. She worships him." She couldn't keep the spite from her voice, no matter how hard she tried. Her teeth showed for a moment and then she shrugged. "And you ask me why? I refuse to sit on the backburner. I won't be just another wolf in this pack. If it means I have to fight...sobeit. So?"

-----

An amused smile crossed her features as she stared down at the young one. Somewhere in the recesses of the older wolve's mind she had wished her own female, Sandrina had the courage and strength to do what it took to become the next leader. As it were Sandrina's wit and intellect rifled only the smallest brainless bird. It was sad, but here....here was a young pretty thing that clearly had a taste for the power and glory that Lilith herself no longer wanted.

"On that you are wrong," she said matter of factly, settingly some though never taking her green orbs off the form of the other. "Fighting is needed only if the other engages.....I choose not to engage. It would deem you poorly if you were to fight someone who did not wish to fight you back." A thought crossed her mind, briefly before it hilted on the winds and stayed in its path. "It seems luck is on your side however.....for a very long time I've wanted a reason to step down. Do you think you can give me one? I know of Gerda and her children, I've seen you as a pup....what you say of your sisters and family is true. But, tell me more of yourself. What will you do the power I might give you?"

-----

Piper stood there, uncertain, as the alpha watched her closely. She could feel her green gaze flicker over her, up and down, as if sizing her up. She smiled and Piper's hackles rose. That wolf had the nerve to -taunt- her?

Or perhaps...she wasn't. Her ears flicked forwards and her head tilted to one side. Lilith wouldn't fight? She was the queen of Gomorrah...and she wouldn't fight? Now the young she-wolf was slightly confused and she struggled to understand what the grizzled wolf spoke.

"A reason for you to step down?" she asked, the fur on her chest ruffling through the evening breeze. "I'll patrol the borders and scout out new members. When I'm older, I'll choose a mate worthy of your whim and perhaps spawn little whelps...and I'll never be like Gerda." She paused, and then offered Lilith a distant grin. "Maybe you'd like to be an advisor, an elder of sorts? In all honesty...I expected to have to fight. I didn't expect a test of wit."

-----

Lilith laughed loudly and for some length of time. Her voice was booming, yet sweet and sensual all at once. "No, no... the likes of us are much too old to fight. I trust you will not be weak and ignorant like Gerda, or let your desires cloud your judgement like Tabansi. Yes, though you are not of mine I can see plenty of myself in you." Finally she rose and give the other wolf a nudge into her shoulder with her own, an act of comaradity...of sameness. "I will be an elder, advisor...former queen...lost memory...what you choose to attach my name to. Karrim....I trust you will know how to deal with him. The same as I always have...make him think he has some sort of power when surely he is powerless."

-----

The laugh tingled down Piper's spine, a strange, solid feeling overwhelming her. Trust? Or something her mother had never given her. She'd never heard of her father being weak...it was something she'd never considered...but someone who idolized him might never see that. A surge of pride rushed through her when Lilith touched her.

She stood as well, tail rising to flag, though she kept it lower than the other she-wolf's was positioned. Piper only respected few wolves -- respect for her had to be won -- and Lilith had just won hers. "Lost memory isn't needed," she murmured matter-of-factly. As for Karrim.... "I know how to handle boys...trust me on that one."

Looking up at Lilith, she offered her own smile; hardly innocent but not spiteful. "So where do I stand?"

-----

Again the deep throated laugh rang out against the wolf as Lilith saw her own reflection in the other form. Completely different yet she could hear her own words echoed back to her. She too knew how to handle the male populous and in a lot of ways that was how this pack got started in the first place. At the offered question she stood back and said simply, "Where you should stand...." Without further explanation she threw her head back and howled into the dead air. The cry was loud and powerful and even the deep sleeped wolf would be able to hear it. It was a howl she had not used before, one that Lilith nor anyone else thought she would ever use. It was the cry of a new leader...new alpha...rebirth....the cry of Piper's reign.

-----

An eyebrow rose in slight surprise. Her...overturn of the alphess, the plan she'd carried from her travels on, had been a simple talk gone well. A smile rose on her maw, an unwavering smile. The odd life she'd led so far was going to look up.

She rose up on her hind legs and pounded forepaws on the ground, feeling the earth beneath paws, and she too threw her head back and let out a cry. Sharp and crisp, holding the youth of the pack's renewal, she put her entire heart into it.

Alpha of Gomorrah. Goal one? Complete...

She just never thought it would feel this damn good.
