Shea Fiara looked up at the outside of Cafe Eros. So this was it. He hoped the woman he was to meet was less mysterious than how he had been paired with her. Shea was more than a bit nervous, after all, he had never been on a date that consisted of actually going out in public.

It had been easy enough to ask girls on dates when they lived in the same orphanage as you did, and activities were usually limited to free things like watching movies together in the common area or begging for extra cookies from the kitchen volunteers. It all seemed sort of silly now. Since he'd been out in the real world these past six years, he hadn't had much time for everyday activities, let alone meeting women. As he stood, nervously shuffling a booted foot across the ground, he suddenly felt that perhaps a little of his juggling prowess, or his ability to play most old Earth rock songs by ear, or his newfound love of ice skating might have been sacrificed for a bit more social skill. Being on a stage in front of hundreds of people was very different than, well, this.

Taking a deep breath, Shea fluttered his wings and headed inside, keeping his eyes open for anyone that matched the brief description he'd been given. He was early, but that didn't mean that this Madeline couldn't be as well.

Her excitement had led her to arrive slightly early. Well, okay, half an hour isn't exactly slight, by any means, but Maddy most certainly felt there was no harm in getting acquainted with a new place and the new people with it, especially a place so quaint as this one. How had she never come across it before?

Being the little socialite that she is, she had already made friendly conversation with a barista, and picked up the daily special, which she sips in small, savouring portions. Dressed in one of her favourite outfits, a cute white halter sundress with large pink, red, and yellow floral print, with her usual skull hat ditched in favour for the less blatant skull pattern on a chunky green headband, she looks like she's stepped right out of summer itself, regardless of the slightly cooler-than-average temperature outside.

She tilts her head, shifting her weight on her cork-bottom shoes, squinting at one of the larger paintings on the wall of the cafe, hoping through squinted eyes she'd be enlightened as to what it's supposed to be. She brings her cup to her lips distractedly, the warm tea tugging at her pursed lips.

Spotting a possible Madeline candidate - actually, Shea thought, if she was early too, this was the only person who could be Madeline at all - Shea stood up straighter in an attempt to force some small amount of bravery to the surface. He approached the girl and her tea, offering a smile, possibly directed at the back of her head, and a, "Madeline? I'm Shea." He sincerely hoped this was the right woman. She had a certain cheerfulness to her that appealed to him, and it wasn't only resulting from her choice of clothing. Shea's outfit was simpler: just a shirt and pants of a green so deep it was almost black, and dark brown boots. This girl was pretty too, but he tried not to think about that. It seemed... shallow somehow.

Mid-sip, Maddy hears her name, and swallows hard on the tea, bypassing the whole savouring part as she whirls around in her place. He looked everything and nothing like she'd pictured from the description, though how he does look is immediately very intriguing to her, a good sign indeed. Her face brightens into a genuine toothy smile.

"Oh! Uh, hi!" she half stammers, wondering if she's supposed to shake his hand or something, and consequently shifts her tea to her left if need be. "Nice to meet you too, Shea!"

Taking the teacup-shift as a signal that he should, in fact, shake Madeline's hand, Shea did just that. He smiled again in return, more at ease now that he knew he wasn't randomly harassing someone. "How's your drink?" he asked, gesturing toward the cup he had displaced. He hesitated to ask her what was good to order here after he realized it would imply she was some sort of serial dater. "I hope you haven't been waiting long."

She smiles wider, glad her handshake offering seemed to have been a good call, but, in turn, almost loses some of the aforementioned tea to a shift in gravity. She catches the cup's handle in her fingers, losing naught a drop, but the ordeal broke her smile momentarily.

"Not long at all!" she half-lied, brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear absently. "I was just trying to figure out this, er, 'work of art'." Okay, so she'd been there a while, but she hadn't been expecting him until then, so she reasoned that this was the best answer to give without looking like some sort of incredibly eager, desperate woman. That'd be a deal breaker straight away!

Maddy takes a pause, the cafe's conversation and lower ambient sounds replacing her voice as she takes a sip of her cooling tea. Her lips curl into another smile over the rim of the cup at him, and wastes no time in thrusting the teacup forward. "Tastes excellent! Here, try it!"

He nodded, glad he hadn't made her wait too long. Shea took the offered cup, sipped, nodded and offered it back. "It's good," he agreed, grinning at her willingness to just hand her drink over for sampling. Was that the sort of thing that came from having a child, he wondered? Shea looked around to see how this place worked. Did one just order from a counter or were there waiters hiding somewhere? "I'll probably have the same... if I can figure out how to get it," he said sheepishly. "Would you like anything else?"

[I thiiink it would be.. so no worries! ^0^]

Maddy grins in return, cupping her cooling tea in her hands leisurely without drinking it herself just yet. She follows his cues and, too, scans the cafe to examine its functioning, though one would think she would have done so already.

"Mm, I'm not sure! I just ordered from the lady over there," she replies thoughtfully, gesturing toward the counter not too far away. She steals a look over Shea, smiling fondly at his apprehension. She'd long forgotten the awkwardness of meeting new people, being the little socialite that she is, but his offer reminds her of her lack of experience in the dating scene. Should she let him get her something, or be polite and pretend she isn't curious about the pastries?

She brushes that same stray lock of hair behind her ear, rolling forward onto the balls of her feet. "Uhm, something small would be nice, thanks!" That was neutral enough, she hoped!

Shea chuckled. "I'll be right back." He crossed to the counter, peering down through the spotless glass at the odd little sandwiches and desserts. He pointed out two pastries and a little cheese thing that looked interesting, paid for them and his tea - which he nearly forgot to order - and carried the tray he received back over to where Maddy was waiting.

"Here you go," he said, taking a seat. "This place certainly has very interesting food." He took his tea from the tray and blew across the top of the cup. "After you," he added, gesturing at the pastel confections. Somehow the fact that Madeline hadn't run off while he had been away put Shea at ease in a weird way.

Madeline is brushing at the hem of her dress just as Shea returns, and no better sight could she have looked up to than a man with desserts in hand. She can barely contain herself, straightening up immediately with a wide smile that slightly crinkles her eyes.

"These almost look too precious to eat!" she practically purrs, looking from one to the other, to the other. Always the girlish one, it isn't a surprise she selects the purple dessert with the flower decoration. She breaks off one of the petals and pops it in her mouth. "Almost," she adds cheekily.

"So, Shea," Maddy speaks up after one more petal, thinking back to how she'd done this, make small talk, countless times before, albeit not under the same circumstances. She decides on, "You play instruments, yes? Which kinds?"

Shea placed his cup back on the table and leaned across it, plucking the strange wave thing off of the blue cake and nibbling it experimentally. It was surprisingly good for something that looked about as tasty as a piece of plastic. He might have said so if Madeline hadn't, at that moment, touched upon the one subject he couldn't resist dropping all others to speak about: music.

"Oh, yes," he said. "Guitar mostly. Some flute and oboe and piano. And I just picked up a used harp! Not a full-sized one, but it's still a beautiful instrument." Shea cleared his throat and reached for the handy knife the woman behind the counter had provided. It was a good thing too, since he would have forgotten silverware on his own. "I play a lot. It's mostly all I do," he added with a smirk, cutting a piece off of the cake he had picked at before. "I'd love for you to come to a show."

Seeming to strike a chord - all puns intended- with Shea conversation wise, Maddy leans forward on her elbows as he speaks about what she can tell is a dear subject to him, and her, as well. She interlocks her fingers beneath her chin and tilts her head just enough for her hair to blanket her jawline in soft blonde locks.

"I'd love that!" she finds herself purring again, though this time a little bit lower. Her tail, mostly preoccupied with keeping a rhythmic swish, now finds itself intertwining her ankles in a fluffy, constricting, scarf-like fashion. "You've got that musician look all over you. I bet you're a natural on stage.."

Shea smiled down at his cake as he continued fiddling with it. He might have blushed, embarrassingly enough, but he lacked the capacity to. Instead, his wings fluttered against his dark shirt for a second, stirring up a bit of shimmering dust that quickly blended with the air. "I've been told I am." He grinned. "It's where I'm comfortable, at least. Comfortable without effort, but I guess if I have to work at it, it isn't comfortable at all."

He picked up a bit of cake and brought it to his lips, pausing as he heard Maddy's soft purring. Well, that was... sweet. Musical. He quirked his head. "Is that you?" he asked. "How do you do that?"
PostPosted: Tue Jun 17, 2008 8:43 pm

Maddy clasps her fingers to her lips in the most unintentionally comical of fashions, blue eyes widened with horror at realizing what he meant. Unfortunately for her, she very much so retains the ability to blush, and turns a nice shade of pink.

"I'm so sorry," she breathes as she brings her hands away from her face and, instead, clasped in her lap. Oh, darnit. Now she'll have to tell him, and, surely, it'll be like all the other times, with her going home with a fractured heart.

Still, he'd asked, and she never thought it fair to lie. Those things come back to bite you in the end, anyway, even if it meant a few more stolen moments of happiness. She averts her eyes a little, her tail now squeezing her ankle for comfort.

"Well," Maddy begins, willing herself to look up, though clearly nervous. She takes a breath and explains, "I'm of a rare little species called Skull Monkeys. But we'renotreallymonkeys, see, no one knows what we are, exactly.. it's uhm, sort of hard to explain, because no one sees what our real faces look like 'til we're Fif- uh, human."

Wow. Eloquent. Maddy chews on her bottom lip, thinking that might have just been one of the most awful recountings of her history she's ever stumbled through.

Shea looked a little confused as he made some vague motions to indicate there was no need for apology, that he actually liked the strange sound, but then Madeline had launched into a description of her species that had obviously caused problems for her in the past, and he had nothing to say for a moment. When she was done speaking, Shea was still at a loss as to what to follow with. Eventually, he settled on some embarrassing stuttering.

"Well, um, I'm not exactly human either." He probably wisely left out the fact that Llear babies were quite... maggoty until they had been out in the air a while. He put his elbows on the table and leaned over just enough to touch Maddy's arm with the fingers that hadn't been recently handling cake. "That noise you made," he said, pulling his hand back up to rest on the table, "I think it's cute."
