Proudly_Jewish DICTIONARIES/GRAMMAR BOOKS ETC My last Arabic teacher recommended the Hans Wehr dictionary. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet as I haven't been able to find it in stores or libraries and it's a tad expensive for me at the moment...but! He's the best foreign language teacher I've had the pleasure of learning from, so I'd totally trust his advice. Oh, I'd also recommend the entire Al-Kitaab series for learning Arabic. (The newest versions are great since they come with dvd's of spoken passages progressing from easy to difficult.)

Olivia_Rose Asalaam-u-alaikum = peace be upon you Arabic is similar to Hebrew like Sallaam = Shalom lol, yeah. When I was first learning Arabic I had already studied a good amount of Hebrew so I kept inserting Hebrew words or using the Hebrew pronunciation (bait vs. beit...) during class, it was sort of funny. My teacher kept giving me funny looks, but never actually said anything.

I only have Arabic-Hebrew and Hebrew-Arabic dictionaries - for those who speak Hebrew, I recommend Abraham Sharonis Arabic-Hebrew dictionary. It's very informative. Shlomo Alons dictionary, which is an Arabic-Hebrew and Hebrew-Arabic dictionary, is smaller but more comfortable to use.

I am learning to write in Arabic because I plan to learn Arabic when I finish school (my mother won't allow me to learn it now.). I am trying to write English words because I know only a few Arabic words. My question is: What are the rules for using the alef, and are there other vowels or are they completely left out like in Hebrew? Thanks heart

Arabic writing is, to some extent, similar to Hebrew writing. There are vowels, but usually, they're left out. In addition to ا (alif) there's ي (I or Y), ة (H) and و (U). There is vowelization, just like in Hebrew (though a lot simpler) -
بَ - a بِ - i بُ - u بْ - no vowel.
There are also ًبٍ, ب and ٌب, but that's a whole other issue.
About when each should go... Now that's quite complicated. I recommend studying the words as they are, unless you're a grammar freak.
(Oh, by the way, I used the letter ب for demonstration... I could have done it on every other letter.)

If anyone would like to learn some Arabic, in The Muslim Ummah of Gaia Guild they are giving some great Arabic lessons and everyone can watch the thread and post in it. http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=29969I wish I could write some Arabic lessons as well but I feel like I must improve my own Arabic before doing that. However, I'd like to start giving them when I'm confident enough.

Sweet!
Marhaba! Shlonkum il-beit? intum faahimtu shwaya arabe'?
(Hello! How are you all today? Do you all understand a little Arabic?)
I'm learning arabic right now, I know how to read it, but i don't know that many words so I doesn't quite help to be able to figure out a word and have no idea what it means lol. I know a little MSA (Modern Standard Arabic), But i'm focusing on the Iraqi dialect because that's what my best friend speaks so...yeah. I'll try and help you guys if you need it, but I'm no expert lol, I'm still learning too wink
