Guten Tag, I have been learning German in school. While this is not of immediate importance, it is something I've been wondering for a long time. How exactly does one say "ich?" I've heard it said "ish" in most of the music I listen to, but my teacher says it kind of like "ihk." Can someone explain this to me?

http://www.dict.cc/?s=ichyou can press on the little speaker symbols next to the word "ich" to hear an almost correct pronuciation. this is for standard german of course. there are lots of other dialects in germany so probably every pronunciation you can think of will be used somewhere.

that sounds more like itch. The I in ich sounds like the i in is the ch in ich sounds like a cat hissing.
That's the best way I can explain it.
In Dutch, they say ik so your teacher my be speaking in a dialect from a part of Germany near a Dutch speaking country.

Some parts of Germany also pronounce it as "ish", so it really does depend on where you go, but the correct pronounciation is always better.
Best answer so far that sounds most like how you should pronounce it though is the dict.cc link. smile

Ich lerne deutsch auch. Ich bin in deutsch II. Ich finde deutsch sehr leicht, aber ich liebe viel deutsch lernen. Ich spreche etwas deutsch, etwas russisch, etwas französisch , und englisch, natürlich. I apologize if my German is not precise. I try to maintain as best grammar as possible in my German II class. I would say I am reaching the level of intermediate. I am no longer a beginner, but I do not know the language well enough to say I can speak it. I love German, I think it is a fantastic language and I am grateful that this guild is here. As for the 'Ich' pronunciation, I cannot help much. I hear classmates mispronounce everything all the time and it makes me cringe. I do my best to pronounce words correctly. I would say to just pronounce it as it is spelled. ICH I-ch.

In highschool, my teacher always said it rather like "Ish," but my professor derides that as being southern and entirely un hoch-deutsch. The pronunciation she insists on is like a 'K' only without one's tongue totally making contact with the roof of one's mouth.

Ich can be pronounced many ways...I usually say Ich like "ish" (ish like eesh) but when I say "Ich leibe diche" I say it like "eke" but I think theres another way too. In the music I listen to (Tokio Hotel) Bill says "ish"

Depends on where you are. It isn't said as "itch" though.
I've heard "eesh," like, "ih" and then the softened hissing of a cat for the sh. I've also heard "ick."

I pronounce "lch" with the ch like the h in Hugo - sort of a soft guttural sound. But I am only a student of german, though I am well aware of regional variations in pronunciation.
