Lovey Dovey had always enjoyed the company of children, even in her youth when hair care came above others she had been able to enjoy being around them. From the first time she had played in the mud to caring for grandchildren, she’d known that was what she was good at. The idea had come to her not long ago to help parents out. Biscuit, her life mate, had been a good father… once he had found out that the children were born. Then Flossy had had babies, now Rhoswen her granddaughter had baskets. Even her herd mate Jaslyn had little frisky bundles running around.
She stood in an open field with one of those frisky foals, Rupali and simply waited. Springtime always meant lots of knock-kneed babies and they all needed playtime. Tossing back some of the purple-blue hair that flew in her face constantly Lovey waited.
Rupali blinked and tossed her head, the orchid her mamma had given her refused to stay back in place so her head jerked randomly to keep it from falling in her eyes or worse falling away forever. She was tucked shyly against Lovey, her adopted grandmother. One day out of the basket and she really wasn’t feeling all the competent at walking or talking to new people. Right now the sun-shiney field they stood in had nothing in it… Soon more people would probably come and keep her occupied or terrified… Time would only tell.
She scanned her surroundings and noted the layout. Walls of trees surrounded them three-fourths of the way around and behind her lay a babbling spring. What it made was a natural boundary line all the way around. Lots of room to run, but not so much that the other side of the area couldn’t be seen. A play place paradise.

Ziva had been chasing a few squirrels up some trees. She was bored and it had been the only entertainment around. It would have been a better day if her friends Riyaz and Kenji were around. At least then she would have something to do besides running after little forest creatures around for no apparent reason. Her mother would knock her silly if she knew that her child was terrifying small innocent critters. The filly watched as the last of the mammals hid for their life. She pouted and decided to go talk a walk by the river. Maybe she could find something else to do if she followed it.

Lovey’s ears twitched back and forth, listening to the wind whistle. Rupali would probably be distraught if nobody showed up at all for their time today in the field. That just couldn’t happen. Someone would have to be out and doing at least… something. As soon as those thoughts rolled through her head a faint noise sounded. Something light was headed their way. Perhaps Jaslyn’s sea otter, Jem, was coming to make sure that Rupali hadn’t made too much mischief yet. At least it would be someone to play with. “Ru, dear, I believe if you look down or up the rive you’ll see someone coming or maybe hear them.”
… oh joy. Tentatively stepping towards the river the foal looked down and managed only to make her eyes blur and cross. Too many things to look at to be able to pinpoint anything in particular. Drat and bother, why did things have to be so complicated. Didn’t people all just come and stand in the same place the way her parents just kind of stood next to each other. Magnetic something or other? Tossing her head back yet again, she snorted and pawed at the ground in a mock show of bravado. A fluffy little bunny could hippity-hop it’s way up to her right now and she’d probably tuck herself back under Lovey til the fear had settled. Why did she need friends anyway? What were Zara and Miki for, decoration?

He raised his legs in a prance, knees rising up to greet his chest as he trotted through the long grass. When he paused, he gazed around, his sight falling to rest on a beautiful mare with a flowing purple mane...and then to the little teal foal at her side. His heart bounced up once, seeing the horn on her head...just like his sister!
As fast as his legs could carry him, the violet colt galloped over to the pair, skidding to a stop in front of them. His own hornless head cocked to one side, peering around Lovey to offer the filly a lopsided grin. "Ello ello!" he nickered, mane falling into his eyes. He was the only one who'd approached them so far and he hoped that she wouldn't be the kind of girl to be put off by his...overdramatics? "I'm Tavarii. Who're you?"

Her light sky, blue eyes remained on the crystal clear waters of the river. She was watching fishes dart by, either for insects that landed above them or because their other fellow fishes chased them away from their territories, nests, or mates. Ziva sighed as even they could not keep her attention for very long. Could the day be even worse? There was no one around for miles and it was getting a bit irritating. A trot down the river and through the meadow seemed like the only solution for boredom at the moment. If that didn't work, then she would just head back to her mother and go to sleep.

Rupali’s ears pricked forward in keen interest as the sound of someone came closer and closer. She didn’t even realize that a colt was behind her until his voice spoke. Startling and spinning around, a loud snort emitted from the shock of another being around, Rupali blinked for several moments. Her wits were quite shattered and it took a moment to clear her throat to speak. “My name is Rupali.. That’s Lovey Dovey….” What else could she say to him. Turning her back, then spinning yet again when she realized her mistake, “Someone is coming down the river.. I want to see who…”
Did she invite the colt to watch too?
“I see something with wings and sparkly blue fur… Uhm.. Can you see it too?” The trotting figure piqued her curiosity and the figure behind her made her nervous. Her sisters were probably so much better at meeting people… Why had Ru gotten the short end of the talent stick? Not jealous.. Just a bit wishful for social skills…

Zara trotted happily over the grasses near the river, her little blue tipped tail flicking happily behind her. Her pink gaze flicked back and forth, peering curiously at he soft bubbling river, before tracing over the grasses and settling happily upon the horizon. Back and forth she watched the world around her, amazed by its overall hugeness and wanting very much to see it all. But, alas, she could not at this moment. . . .
She was a mission of uptmost importance! She was looking for her sister. Mother and Father would be awfully mad if she didn't follow strict instruction and only follow the river. Occassionally the little pink and blue, silver-smeared lady glanced behind her but she saw no hint of purple or blue. If they were double checking or following her (she was awfully young to be set free) they gave her no sign.
Now . . .where were they. . . . She caught sight of another little one peering haphazardly in to the water. But that wasn't Rupali, and therefor not worth her time at the moment. She couldn't distract herself too much, but maybe once she found her sister she could go play with the other! But where. . . . where. . . . .
Ah ha! She caught sight of a very long-haired adult mare standing up upon a small hill. Along with her was that all too familiar blue swirled filly that Zara knew only as her sister! Rupali! A smile broke free on her face and for a moment she seemed to want to break in to a run . . . but something stopped her. No, no - if she were to run she wasn't going to look ridiculous doing it! Yes, that's right, the little one was already concerned with her looks and overall appearance. She did seem to walk with a natural elegance and grace, light on foot and what few pratfalls she had taken first out of the basket had been stubbornly conquered.
Picking up her pace, confident as ever, she couldn't help but giggle in good humor as she bridged the distance between herself, Lovey and her sister. A striped tailed puprle colt was there too, but as a stranger she had yet to pass judgement on him. Who was? Certainly no brother of theirs, and he looked too dark to be one of Lovey's. Hmmm. For now, Rupali, than the little colt, than that little stranger not far below!
"Rupali!" She greeted, trotting gracefully around the two foals and Lovey. She paused to reach out and offer both Lovey and Rupali a little nuzzle, her blue furred tail flicking happily. "I missed you so!" She admitted, though her pink gaze turned to settled upon the silver and black one. She glanced at her sister, wanting to greet this colt too, but not wanting to be rude either. . . . It was up to Rupali to introduce him, wasn't it, considering they were friends first and must already know one another. Oooh, Zara wanted friends too! A shame she hadn't come with originally. . . but next time she'd know.
Next time she wouldn't let her sister escape by herself so easily.

No one could blame Ziva for jumping at the sound of another foal running and screaming someone's name out. It had been really quiet and she was so concentrated on the fishes that her senses hadn't picked up anyone around. She wanted to beat herself up at the moment for being so unaware. If a kalona or skinwalker had been around nearby, she would have been dead minutes ago. Darn it, Ziva! Pay attention to what goes on in your surroundings! Don't forget what momma taught you! The filly scowled herself again for having her guard down even after her mother had spent hours teaching her about the dangers that lurked in every corner although everything seemed so peaceful.
Her mind wandered away to the foal that had galloped by. Who was she calling to and where was she going in such a hurry? Ziva looked up towards a hill and noticed a large creature, but it was a blur from the distance. She squinted her eyes and figured out that it was merely another mare in the area, but of course it wasn't her mother. Something moved in the corner of her eye, so she turned in the other direction and noted that there were two more foals beside the other filly. They seemed to be staring at her, as if trying to figure out what she was.

So many things were going on at once, if she didn’t have Lovey to keep her feeling safe right now Rupali would have tucked her lion’s tail and headed off in any direction that meant being alone. Mama and Papa probably wouldn’t like that though since her sense of direction wasn’t developed yet and she could easily end up somewhere that Kalonas go to find their meals. Hm.. Did that have a designated area?
Her mind wandered a little bit when at the thought of kalonas. Her mama had not had anything bad to say about them, then too her mother never said anything unkind towards others. She had said that it takes all kinds of people from all different walks of life to make the world worth living in and she wouldn’t get rid of any of them for anything. Her father had said to run like hell if one of them came into view…
Smiling at Tavii then turning to look down river then back to Lovey, Rupali felt like the center of attention and wished there was someone else to put that light on. It felt like too much for her little self to handle… Her sisters would know what to do right now and she simply was a fish out of water…
The sound of delicate trotting filled her ears then the sight of her sister followed as well. Zara! Oh thank god. Rupali had gone off with Lovey this morning and hadn’t seen Miki or Zara. Either her sister knew that she was in need of help, or Ru had the best dumb luck… ever. The silver-tipped lion’s tail flicked back and forth in happiness and she nuzzled against Zara’s neck. Ru knew she was the oldest of the three, and that she ought to be the fearless leader.. Instead the background called her name. She’d push and promote her sisters, in her mind’s eye they deserved it. Not that she was worthless.. Ack. Never mind her own mind.
She looked up and Lovey had nuzzled Zara softly then the old mare had wandered away from the foals. Out of hearing range, but well within sight. She had even given the little colt a soft nudge. Not as intrusive as a nuzzle, but definitely a nice goodbye. Clearing her through softly she smiled at Zara and nodded to the stranger, “This is Tavarii… He just came over here to see what was going on I think… am I right, Tavarii?”
Without thinking about it, Ru wrapped her tail around her sisters. The silver fur meshing with Zara’s blue fur and the orchid color matching her blue swirls. It was Ru’s preferred way of walking around with her sisters, although she sometimes thought that maybe Zara didn’t like it at least when they were moving. Ru wasn’t a clumsy foal in the least, she could walk quite well but in comparison to Zara she had all left feet. Oi. Trilling a soft high note, her usual way of expressing happiness she turned her head towards the river, “Someone’s comin’ did you see ‘em Zar?” Visibly startling, using her sister’s name made Ru see the mistake she had just made. “I’m sorry… Tavarii, this is my sister Zara… I call her Zar, but you’ll have to see if she’ll let you do the same.”
A blush rose up her cheeks and she ducked her head back feeling a fool.

A slight sense of panic crept up her spine. There were three foals ahead of her, yet she was unsure if would be ok to meet up with them. Maybe they would reject her since she was so different from them. Her wings made her an outcast amongst the other soquili children. Now she really wished her friends were here, at least to back her up if anything wrong happened. Even if only her brother was here she would feel much better about approaching the two fillies and colt. Ziva's pace slowed down to a stop as soon as she was merely a few feet away from the young group. Her mind raced with fears and questions about whether to move on or turn around and leave quickly.

His father hadn't been happy. This wasn't to say his father had been furious or appalled by the outcome of Ailurinae's pregnancy but the tiny colt had known from the moment he had opened his eyes that his father was troubled. While there was a glint in his eye, and while he was proud of his mate and the health of his offspring the issue of their gender was something that soon made him pensive and quiet.
The foal didn't know it yet, but it had been the sibling rivalry between two brothers that had ultimately led to his brother and his father dying. It would be many years before the foal would realise that his own father and killed his uncle and his grandfather for the sake of achieving royal status and recognition within a herd. Perhaps his father was guilty now, or perhaps he feared a repeat...it was anyone's guess.
Nevertheless, as the foal bounced up and down through the foliage and leaves that lined the forest floor he took into account every little thing and remained oblivious to the political uproar that would be caused by his birth. Everything was new to him and though his legs weren't completely steady as of yet he still chose to dart up to every little thing.
His father was of course trailing behind him, the faint sound of chiming gold upon his father's long white locks was not hard to hear. Yet his father seemed to be aware of the necessity for every foal to have a certain amount of freedom as they explored new worlds. So long as he remained safe his father wouldn't intervene.
That being said as they approached the edge of the forest and the little foal heard the faint sounds of giggles and chatter he paused in his tracks. Front leg remaining lifted, his ears flicked forward and his eyes widened...He'd never heard such a thing before. His father's voice was so strong and rich while his mother's was so soft and gentle...to hear high squeals and giggles was entirely new.
"Raníero," his father had drawn near as the foal hesitated and had fixed his gaze upon him. Towering high above his tiny form, his father seemed worlds away from what he would become but it was nice to know he had someone to run to and to cuddle against when unsure. It was also nice to know that his father, someone so mighty as he was, would be watching over him wherever he went!
"Mmm, papa?" He hadn't had any form of elocution lessons as of yet and thus his accent and enunciation left much to be desired, he was simply lucky his father accepted it for the time being.
"Never hesitate," Paramekia's words were simply but held some encouragement in them as the tiny foal, now known as Raníero bounded forward to investigate the strange sounds ahead of him. Shortly after the sound of gentle chiming could be heard again as his father followed.
Quickening his pace the tiny colt made short work of the remaining gap between the forest edge and the plains, bursting out into the rather large meadow. It was then that he once again skidded to a halt and peered at the rather large number of soquili - little soquili just like him and they were all...
"Papa, they're all girls!" Raníero declared in a stage whisper before catching sight of the other colt, "Okay, well most of them are girls..." he corrected.
"How can you tell?" Paramekia was fairly certain his son had never even encountered a female child before, yes he had seen his mother but to distinguish immediately.
"They look funny."
Paramekia quirked a brow and couldn't help when the corners of his mouth lifted in a half smile.

Unlike her sister, who had locked her tail with her own, Zara was not at all intimidated by this group of foals surrounding her. Lovey had edged away, meaning the only one in charge would be her . ..or so the protective sister in her screamed. She understood Rupali's gentleness, her shyness, and wasn't afraid to take up the roll as leader when it came to her sisters. Oh no, it mattered not that she had only just arrived, if someone was going to be in charge it was going to be her.
Especially as none of the others seemed to be particularly chattery.
Leaning over, she lipped softly at Rupali's neck in a loving moment before turning back to the crowd before them. First and foremost, she turned her magenta gaze on to the striped tailed colt closest - Tavarii. Now that introductions had been (sort of) made, she felt it polite enough to respond. "I'm Zara," only her sisters had right to call her something OTHER than her proper name. ". . . tis a pleasure to meet you!" She dipped her head in greeting, forever graceful, before turning her attention back to the area surrounding them.
Things were changing and fast! More introductions would have to be made to keep chaos from erupting. The little filly by the river had decided to approach was now staring at them like they were crazy or had sprouted four heads. . . Hmmm. Delicate little wings sprouted from the strangers back, beautiful to look at and intriguing. But why did the filly stay away and only stare? Did she not know that staring was rude. . .? Maybe not. . .
Zara took a few steps ahead of her sister, though she kept her tail laced around one of her ankles. "Hello there. . . . Such lovely wings you have!" She hoped the little filly would bridge the distance between them without Zara or Rupali having to physically ask or move the group around them. There was nothing to be afraid of here. . .
They were all friends!
Or would be if Zara had her way.
A scuffling nearby caused her ears to twitch. Glancing over, yet another foal appeared! And this one screamed colt as well. . . he was larger and didn't seem nearly as graceful. Huh. How long had he been in the area, Zara plum didn't know. Giggling softly, she pawed at the earth and gave her mane a little shake. What was with everyone staring? Rupali and she were beautiful, certainly, but gaping wasn't nearly necessary. "Oh come now - you can come over too! I promise we don't bite!" She couldn't speak for Taverii, but Rupali certainly wouldn't chomp . . . . and Zara had no reason to play dirty. Besides, biting wasn't very lady-like, so it was best she refrained from such an action. . . .

Zara seemed so brave next to Ru’s cowardess. Both of her parents frowned upon being afraid of others. Baldev took a special pride in being willing to go out and meet new people. Jaslyn did not take pride in it, but instead, her life was surrounded by the drive to get out and see what others were up to. Rupali would have questioned her sister’s need to be in charge, if it had been verbal… Why did someone have to be in charge? Why couldn’t they all just be equal to each other.
Rupali enjoyed the touch then looked back at the little ones that were about. Time to take a quick inventory of who and what were around right now. Tavarii, the silly colt who had come up on her when she had not been paying attention. A blue colt that had not really said much yet. A blue-brown filly with large wings and lots of sparkles. Her sister… annnd Lovey. Well, Lovey wasn’t a foal, but she was there too. Rupali kept her eyes trained on the ground after that, trying to think of something worth saying.. Nothing was really coming into mind. Good grief…
Her eyes rose up quickly to look at the brown-blue filly. Why wasn’t she interested in playing with them? Maybe tag or something like that… Shaking her mane out, the baby fine hairs rustling in the wind, Ru opened then closed her mouth a few times. Drat. Nothing was really there to come out. “It.. It’s true.. You do have rather pretty wings… What’s your name?” There.. She had helped out just a bit. Hadn’t she?
She moved with Zara so that their tails did not make a rope. Someone could eaily go flying through and get tripped up by them. It wouldn’t stop the other for but a moment, but the pain that would go with a hit to the tail did not sound all that much fun. A smile danced along her lipf for a moment. Perhaps she’d try to trip her papa sometime.
What was Zara up to now… She didn’t really know.
Bite? Why would they bite? Once she had nipped at Jaslyn, but that had been a temper tantrum and mama had made sure that that hadn’t happened again. Oi. Blushing at the thought, then picking her head up to arch her neck and prance in place. Ru knew that she didn’t have the grace of her sister, but she also wasn’t exactly bow-legged and gawky. Okay, a bit on the gawky side, but that came with the age didn’t it? “Yes.. The more we have the more we can play. Tag with a lot of people sounds like fun, don’t you guys think so?“ She smiled brightly at the group of them, the action only slightly awkward to her. “Zar.. Don’t you think tag would be fun with more than two people?”
