Welcome to the Portuguese General Discussion! This is where we discuss everything related to the Portuguese language, including, but not limited to:
-asking specific questions about Portuguese vocabulary and grammar (people who can speak Portuguese fluently can help answer others' questions) -recommendations for Portuguese dictionaries, websites, etc -and everything else about the beautiful langauge of Portugal! 3nodding
Please note that although speaking in Portugese is allowed here, it is not mandatory.
Let's start off with a few facts about the Portuguese language:
Spoken in: Angola, Andorra, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Guinea Bissau, Luxembourg, Macao S.A.R. of China, Mozambique, Namibia, Paraguay, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and other countries.
Total number of speakers: 208-218 million
Language Family: Romance Languages (along with Spanish, Italian, Romanian, French, and others)
Regulated by: International Portuguese Language Institute; CPLP

I don't speak portugeese, but I have always wondered what does the "a" with a "~" over it sound like?

spanishnerd99 I don''t speak portugeese, but I have always wondered what does the "a" with a "~" over it sound like? The "~" over any vowel means that you have to add in a nasal sound. For example, o with an ~ over it means you pronounce the o like the French word "on". (The sound doesn''t exist in English or in Spanish, so I dunno if you get what I''m saying sweatdrop )

could you give me a word with that vowel...and pronounce it like in English? Does it sound like "ay" like an "N" with a tilde in Spanish sounds like "ny"?

spanishnerd99 I don't speak portugeese, but I have always wondered what does the "a" with a "~" over it sound like? sweatdrop i dont really know but when u put that on top of the word it makes a different sound. i havent written in portugese since i was 8 i moved to U.S. and stoped writtin in that laguage, although i can still speak it and understand it
