I don't speak portugeese, but I have always wondered what does the "a" with a "~" over it sound like?

The "~" over any vowel means that you have to add in a nasal sound. For example, o with an ~ over it means you pronounce the o like the French word "on". (The sound doesn''t exist in English or in Spanish, so I dunno if you get what I''m saying sweatdrop )

could you give me a word with that vowel...and pronounce it like in English? Does it sound like "ay" like an "N" with a tilde in Spanish sounds like "ny"?

not at all sweatdrop it's more like... *thinks*

it's kind of like the word "on" in English, but it's as if you don't finish pronoucing the 'n'... kind of as if you're pushing the n through your nose, I guess O.o

yeah, it's hard to explain >.< if you ever learn French in the future you'll understand what I mean, there's a sound exactly like it in French 3nodding (French is similar to Spanish by the way, so it would be easy for you to learn French 3nodding )

French is quite odd to me...not in a bad way though. A lot of the letters are pronounced oddly. Another question I have about portugese: Does it sound kind of like spanish? I was on the Internet, and I found a site thinking it was in spanish...until I read the 2nd sentance.

no actually... the written language is unbelievably similar to Spanish, but the pronouciation is more like French surprised for some reason when I listen to Portuguese I'm always under the impression that it's Spanish being spoken by a Dutch or German speaker confused
