The wind had dropped down to a gentle breeze, but it was still bitterly cold, strange weather for mid spring. The clouds above them raged, swollen with the unshed tears of the gods. It was a fitting environment for the day.

Irelia was silent after her emotional leakage with Jace, content to wheel her bike around the park with Jace beside her on her monstrosity. It was weird, having a best friend, though she wasn't complaining. Its just that Irelia had always felt alone, and suddenly, she had someone to depend on. And well, someone to lend a hand in the fights she had with the neighbourhood kids.

"Jace, lets go somewhere. I dunno where."

Jace swung one leg over the monsterbike: it still looked like a Frankenstein of a thing, all rattly. "I don't want to be near people right now," she said. "People suck. Let's go to the forest."

They drove their bikes down away from the park, down the embankment, across the creaky bike-bridge across the river: down another street until they were at the forest, where the redhead swung her leg back over her bike again and wheeled it instead. The forest floor was relatively dry -- it had rained earlier, but hadn't gone through -- and was quiet and still, except for the wind rustling through the treetops, scattering the detritus on the floor here and there. It was comfortingly gloomy.

"I have some snacks in my bag," she said after a while. They were swallowed by the trees: they were much bigger than they were, much thicker, and Jace strayed off the path and into the darker woods. She'd always liked the darkness. It felt safe. "We'll find somewhere to sit, I guess. You eat jerky?"

Irelia followed Jace, pedaling madly; She had rode her bike all year, but her impressive leg muscles were no match for the metal ones of Jace. Clearly winded by the time Jace stopped, Irelia braked and followed Jace in to the darkness, with few misgivings.

Jace could take on anything, that was for sure.

"Jerky? Never had it, but I eat anything. The goat part showing through, obviously. I once ate my homework in class because someone dared me, and I got in trouble."

Irelia recognized the woods they were walking through, and shivered despite herself. The place that disturbed Antony so, and made her quite uncomfortable was up ahead and Irelia's nose twitched as the heady scent of lilies meandered through the forest.

"Hey, Jace, want to turn around? There's an old well up ahead and its creepy."

Jace had been about to say what? Cool, really? when she realised that if Irelia was saying something like that -- fearless Irelia -- then it was probably going to creep her out, and that would be an a*****e thing to do. So she said, "Wells are dumb," and made a ninety-degree angle turn, until both of them came to the grassy bank that overlooked the river. She sat down with a thump, bike leaning against a tree, and she opened her knapsack. The river was sluggish and lazy today, not flowing too fast: everything seemed to go stiller.

"This is cool jerky," she said, "we brought it over from Africa. It's made of ostrich, it tastes real weird."

Pause. "What's it like being a goat girl?"

Irelia pulled the kickstand out of her bike, now more aware that she had relegated her most favourite thing to eternal rusting and uncaring. Plopping herself down beside Jace, and accepted the offer of the ostrich jerky from Jace.

Irelia wrinkled her forehead in consternation. She had never really thought about what it was like being her, and it was odd to really think about it.

"Well, I'm not really a goat girl, to be honest. I think I'm more closely related to sheep because my horns curl. But my Father didn't know that, and Goat Girl stuck," Irelia sighed heavily, "I can't wear shoes, and hats look ridiculous on me. But the sheep parts are not really the problem. Its this darn lock."

Irelia gestured to the large metal piece on top of her chest, made of a dark iron with a curious keyhole on the front.

"I can't take it off, I don't have the key... and somehow, it really bothers me, like I should know what it means. I'm sort of like, this whole jumble of things that don't make much sense. You're lucky Jace, at least your legs are cool. Mine are silly."

The redheaded girl gave her a serious what the hell are you talking about look: she pulled the jerky out of her knapsack and gave Irelia a big piece before tearing into one herself. Everyone needed some weird meat. "Your legs are cool," she said. "You have demon hooves." (This was cool to Jace.) "The key thing's weird, though. It never comes off? Not even in the shower?"

Irelia snorted.

"Sometimes I wonder if that's really what they are. Make more sense, anyway."

Irelia took the jerky and chewed thoughtfully. It was weird, but Irelia was famished, and it wasn't weird enough that she was going to spit it out. Plus she didn't want to offend Jace. To Jace, weird was awesome.

"Yeah, I've never taken it off. Father tried to forcibly remove it once, and he never tried that again. I blacked out," Irelia looked at Jace, and unzipped her jacket, to show Jace better, "See? Its sort of... melded to my skin. Its weird that it doesn't rust. I wonder if someone could pick the lock..."

Irelia just thought of that, and wondered if it was possible. For her to have a keyhole was just weird, and she often wondered if it meant anything more than "weird girl with a keyhole".

Jace peered over at the keyhole in a way that would probably embarrass and traumatise both of them when they were teenagers. Chewing avidly -- probably Jace was just eating it because it was an ostrich, and eating an ostrich was neat -- and tilted her head, swallowing thoughtfully. "We could get a hairpin and try to pick it," she said, "I saw that on TV. Maybe it opens up your chest and your lungs and s**t."

"I don't have any hairpins," Irelia gestured to her wild, curly hair, "I don't even try and tame it anymore."

Irelia tried to wriggle out of the lock, but it didn't work at all. Sighing heavily, she flopped on to her back.

"How was Africa, Jace? I missed you when you were gone. Kids beat me up, Harper... you know, and Father sent me to boarding school."
PostPosted: Sun May 04, 2008 11:48 pm

"What the ******** got Jacoba's attention: she stopped trying to peer into the keyhole and sat up a little, peering into Irelia's face to see if she had been screwing around with her, all tangerine eyes and a raised eyebrow that she had spent most of her time in Africa learning how to c**k. "Boarding school? And who beat you up? Because I'll seriously bully their asses so hard their kids' kids will be describing it to a therapist."

Irelia just shook her head.

"Just the neighbourhood kids. They didn't understand that I was different. And they did think i was a demon."

Irelia sighed, and picked at the base of her nails. She didn't really remember much about boarding school, other than at night. It bothered her that she couldn't remember, and she would often wake up late at night, screaming from a nightmare. The book was still no help, as Asher's mind was still blocked from her. Yes, she could still read his "secrets" but her powers had grown to such an extent that she knew that they were fabrications. And she had started calling him "father" instead of daddy, like she used to. Which made Irelia wonder just what she had forgotten.

Instead of heaping all that on Jace, who probably would have tore out of the woods to confront her father, Irelia shrugged.

"Boarding school was okay though. Not really much happened. I don't have to go back though, which is fine by me."

It was a good thing that Irelia had not: Jace would have, in fact, immediately darted off to confront Asher, which was not the best idea ever had by any preteen girl. Her fists were bunched up already in annoyance: obviously nobody was allowed to abuse Irelia other than her. "s**t, Rel," she said. "Jesus. Boarding school. My mom would so freakin' do that if she didn't think I'd bust out of there Hulk-style in five seconds. Boarding school. That's so weird."

"It was seriously not that bad. No one hurt me at least," A stray curl fell in to her face, and she brushed it aside. It made her happy that Jace still answered every question with violence, as it gave her hope she would never change.

"Forget about it. Its over, I'm not grossly scarred from the school or the bullies, and we're eating ostrich jerky, of all things. How was Africa? You didn't answer me."
PostPosted: Mon May 05, 2008 12:47 am

Jace hugged her knees close to her skinny chest. Then she took another comforting mouthful of ostrich jerky. "It was okay," she said thickly, through a mouthful of dead bird. "I mean, I was sick the first half. Being stuck with M.B. and Wisp sick is no friggin' picnic. Wisp is such a retard, and M.B. is, like, seriously unsympathetic even when you're hacking up a lung. But after that it was actually kind of cool. We were out in the middle of nowhere -- there was, like, this gazelle herd you could see wandering out in the weird dry grass, and like a billion snakes, and sometimes the grass set itself on fire for no reason."

"That sounds so awesome," Irelia said wistfully, wishing her boarding school had been in Africa and not stinky London.

"Wisp is the super colourful girl, right? She was inviting us all for superhero tryouts,"fearing to look uncool in Jace's eyes, Irelia quickly backtracked, "Which I entered. To humour her. Though... we totally could be superheroes. Or Anti-heroes at least. You're like, half bionic woman."

Irelia noticed that the shadows on the ground had merged, and it was reaching twilight. Instead of moving, Irelia took another piece of jerky, and chewed it loudly.

"I don't think I can stand being home much longer. We should just go camp out somewhere, like you suggested. We'd be so much better at taking care of ourselves than our parents."
