There was a rule in the Darnell household that one did not go to the big mall without a parent: not even if you had six friends, which Wisp had tried to circumvent with that excuse before, not even if one of those friends was Chris who was more than able and pretty much the size of a full-grown human guy. However, hope had finally come in the guise of Antony: he was grown-up and Dr. Darnell deemed him mature, and he had also of late had access to the seldom-used car that lay mouldering in the garage. (Beatrix only drove if it was an emergency, using Thwomp: it wasn't really a good look for a blind woman to be behind the wheel, after all. The days of being Jack's driver were long gone.)
Although there was a list of stupid stuff to pick up for maths class, Rory and Wisp's excursion was also for the good of spandex, which had been voted the best thing to have training practices in. Who gave them this idea it wasn't really sure: what the real problem was was that Antony was stuck with two preteens with a desire for legwarmers and was totally in charge of them. Having car use came with some downsides: babysitting was one of them.
Curfew was only dusk: no parent in the car: life for Wisp was awesome.
"Hey, Ror, know what we should do?" she said, as Antony pulled into the parking lot with them in the backseat. "We should pretend that Antony is our bodyguard!"

Rory was excited about this first mall trip with not parents. It was a fun, fun experience and made her feel much more grown up! Even if she wasn't. Besides, being a kid was more fun! Except you couldn't go to the mall with six friends.
At Wisp's question, however, she looked at the back of Antony's head, since they were in the back seat. "Do you think he looks mean enough to be?" she asked, looking back at her best friend. Bodyguards were supposed to look tough and mean. Chris carried that look really well.

"I doubt I could pass off as a bodyguard," Antony said as he put the car in park and unbuckled his seatbelt. "Now let's get going. We need to get everything done as soon as possible."
Because honestly, shopping with two little girls was not his idea of a fun trip. He was just too princely to say that. He got out and pulled open one of the back doors so they could get out as well.

Wisp hopped out after unbuckling: although she was Jace's sister, she had a slightly less dire personality. Her personality tended to zoom off the other end of the spectrum, as confirmed by the superheroes thing. It was cute that kids still felt the need for dressing up simply because they were going out to the mall. "Or we could pretend you were our big brother," she said, "we haven't got one."
This was considered. "Except you don't look anything like us," she said. "Super uncool lame."
She scrabbled in the back seat for her notebook: it was wallpapered cover to cover with fuzzy stickers. "I guess we can unofficially work as we shop, Rory!" she said.

"We can just call Antony our boyfriend!" Rory said, having misused the context of that word. Again. She has scrambled out of the car as well and waited for Wisp to get her note book before heading to the mall entrance.
"What you want to work on? Costumes?" she asked, having setting the 'what to do with Antony' thing in her own mind. They were after spandex, so costumes seemed to fit the topic. "And we gotta get something big for Chris to wear!"

Okayyyy. Wisp had just called him "super uncool lame" and Rory had declared him their boyfriend. Emphasis on the "their." He wisely decided to keep his mouth shut and get his list out. There was no smart response to any of that, if you asked him.

"I know, I know," said Wisp. "It's so hard! Because what if he hits teen and goes like super ginormous? I was thinking that if we maybe just got him a huge coat, he'd still look cool."
She hefted the book under her arm. "I thought we'd talk about Delilah and Irelia maybe being on the team," she said, "we'll have to pick, you know? And you interviewed Delilah, so you can tell me if she has any super powers or not. It's too bad we can't get another guy in. Chris is our only boy."
Distracted, the blonde girl looked up at Antony. "Do you have a girlfriend?" she asked innocently.

It seemed he had two, now, he thought a bit dryly. He started to respond when Thanatos appeared in front of him, grinning evilly so that his skull threatened to show through his face. "Oooh, interesting question, blue boy!" the shinigami said, floating ahead of them. "And it looks like you've got yet another pretty little girl hanging out with you!"
"No," Antony said, blatantly ignoring the death goth. "I don't."

"Delilah talks to plants and bees and she could probably find out really super cool things out about where people have been and stuff," Rory said, after Antony's response. Why Wisp wanted to know that, she didn't know.
She did frown, though. Didn't she just say that they were his friends? Thus meant they were his girlfriends? Then she shrugged it off, oblivious to the fact the shinigami was here. "But that seems to be about it. But she's nice! And doesn't get made easy!" And those two things seemed to be really good points to her.
That and she liked the plant thing, regardless of Irelia's comments.

Although Rory had no idea about Antony's friend, Wisp did: she was the holder of the Rainbow of Light, and seeing death spirits was not something she was barred from. She had only barely heard what Rory had said -- plants, which she agreed were cool, and how Del was nice and patient -- but the new arrival held her attention. She tugged on Antony's sleeve a little.
"What's your friend's name?" she said, interested. "And who did he call pretty? Because me and Rory, we're both pretty. Though Rory's prettiest," she added out of staunch loyalty. "I wish I had red hair."

Antony jerked, staring down at her in horror that barely knew how to manifest itself on his face. He didn't get horrified often, after all. "I--I have no idea what you're talking about," he said finally in a bland tone that contrasted severely with his expression.
"Hello, little girl, what's your name?" Thanatos asked, moving so he was in front of Wisp and smiling. "Do you want to be Antony's girlfriend?"

Rory stopped as well, looking at both Antony and Wisp curiously. There was someone else here? She didn't see anyone else.... A frown went on her lips as she watched then two. There was no reason to doubt what Wisp said, she trusted Wisp after all.
But she did wish that she was in on this, for now she was like the odd man out....

The blonde girl was immediately a wash of snickers. "He wants to know if I want to be Antony's girlfriend," she said in horrified glee to Rory: obviously, the two of them were going to have to have a little talk later about boyfriends, girlfriends, and what these concepts meant. She wrinkled her nose when she turned back to Thanatos, though. "I haven't even kissed a boy yet," she told him sadly, with obvious regret. "I tried to kiss Iggy when we were having chickenpox together but Xi took him away before he could kiss me. So. I'm, like, a failure. I'm Wisp Jacqueline Darnell. What's your name?"

"I am Thanatos, the angel of death, the reaper of souls, the--"
"Annoying one," Antony muttered. "Come on, Rory, let's go do your shopping, shall we? While Wisp starts getting strange looks for talking to air."

Rory was, however, very very lost. That was clear as day, given by her facial reaction. Then she cocked her head to the side. "Wisp, I don't see anyone else but us. And I don't hear them either..." she said, a bit sorrowfully.
Then she went into another topic. "But aren't we already Antony's girlfriends? We are his friends and we are girls," she said. That just screamed how much else she didn't know.
She didn't have older sisters with older friends, and thus didn't know this idea.
