The sign had been up around school for a couple of days: it had been hard to ignore, as it was terrifyingly technicolour, and the title was in misspelled bold:
WANT TO JOIN A SUPERHEROE TEEM?? COME 2 THA GYM FRIDAY AFTANOON!!!!
A upcoming superheroe team needs U!! Do u want 2 be our 4th member? Room 4 promotion 4 the rite person! Save othas and crush oppresshion 4 the revolution! Make freinds!
SUPA POWERZ NEEDID OR TECKNOLOGICAL KNOWLEGE!!!
It was signed Wisp Darnell, Christian Deakon and Aurora Zee. At least Christian's participation meant that there was the possibility it was an actual superhero team. Even if their superhero power obviously wasn't spelling.
Come Friday afternoon, Wisp Darnell set herself up in the gym with a couple of desks, chairs, a pile of paper, a selection of markers in rainbow colours and business casual: of course, business casual to Wisp meant that she was wearing a tie that she had painted with cherries over her t-shirt and bright blue skirt, but she was satisfied that she had made a professional image for herself. Her mother was always on about professional images, after all.
Now all she had to do was wait for the potential superheroes to come.

Chris yawned, having been dragged to the thing against his will. He still wasn't sure why he was the sidekick on this deal, after all. Next thing he knew Wisp would try to downgrade him to "mount" as well. He glanced over from where he was lounging on the gym mat, eyeing Wisp thoughtfully.
"I don't think anyone's coming," he said after a little while of waiting. "And I'm getting hungry. I didn't get my mid-afternoon second snack." Or his third, for that matter, he thought irritably. "I want sushi."

"Oh, sushi would be good!" Rory said. She was standing up next to where Wisp was, making sure that everything else was in order. There wasn't much else to do, after all. "Think your mom would make us some? She makes the best!" Flattery. Flattery should get some sushi for them all!
Maybe. Chris had been more grumpy lately.

"Do you know what that is called, Christian?" asked his tiny blonde friend rhetorically. "That is called self-sufficiency and the cellphone. We could always get some sushi delivered. I have an allowance now."
Allowances were so great. Later on she would discover that being a trust-fund baby was even better.
"And I know people are coming," she added, drawing a heart on her arm. It had eyes and a mouth full of mean little teeth, and blood was dripping from the teeth grotesquely. "I know it. I know lots of people are coming, and you're just being a Downer Dan. I love you! Why are you harshing my buzz?"
Thankfully Wisp had no idea what 'harshing one's buzz' actually meant. Why was Rory always so sweet and cheerful and Christian always so not? Christian needed Rory to teach him things. An idea started to formulate in Wisp's overheated brain.

"Because I'm hungry," Chris said. "And there's no way in hades you're going to get me in tights, got it? I watched super hero shows. It's not going to happen. They look like they chafe."
And thus the true problem he had with this situation showed its ugly head. He could handle a lot, just not that!

"Chris is just cranky because he is hungry," Rory said, waving it off. "He grew up, got jerk genes, and cranky!" she added just for good measure. Then she looked back at Wisp curiously.
"So, where can we get sushi from? Is it any good? We could get lots and serve it to the people coming!" Then she thought better of this. "Or not... Chris would eat it all."

Luckily, just before true dissension could explode into the ranks, a brightly colored head peeped around the door to the gym. Soon after, the rest of the delicate little body followed and Delilah stood in the wide open space with her head tilted to one side. She blinked long lashes at the three of them, absorbing the situation. Then she reached up to twist a piece of teal hair around her finger. "What are you all doing?" she asked.

"'Sup, Delilah!" Totally distracted from the issues of sushi, spandex and Christian Deakon not-enough-snacks depression, Wisp waved brightly at the teal-haired girl. "You came for the auditions, right?" (She looked at Chris with a triumphant I-told-you-so look.) "Do you have a super power?"

Chris's mouth shut and he sat up, trying to make himself look smaller by bringing his knees to his chest. "We're looking for people with special talents," he said mildly. It was such a contrast from the attitude that he had been giving the two before that it was shocking.
Obviously he was still trying to be a nice guy with people he didn't know that well.

"I don't know." Delilah took another few steps into the gym and smiled. It was her usual expression - pretty and vague and polite. "What sort of super powers do you all have? Do you mean magic or something else?"

Rory gave Chris an irritated look for the sudden change in posture and attitude. But she'd ask him about that and other things she had been meaning too later. Then she looked at the other girl with a bright smile. "I can run fast! Chris is strong, and Wisp has this rainbow whip thing!"

"I'm just a little... strong," Chris said mildly, rubbing the back of his head in a sheepish manner. He was also pretty sure he was fire proof, because he never had to use mitts to get things out of the oven. He just didn't mention that.

Irelia flounced in to the gym, covered with glittery stars that she had found in the art bin. Add a little paste, and a lot of glitter, and voila. Instant superhero.
Or so she thought.

"Oh." Delilah looked thoughtful and unwound the bit of hair. Absently, she smoothed her skirt down before crossing the gym fully and hopping up to sit on the edge of the table. "I can't do any of that," she replied matter-of-factly. "But I get along with plants."
