Episode is so filler for 40 minutes, then it's rushed rushed rushed into finish.

The first 40 minutes shows what the world would've been like had Clark never been sent to Smallville. Kara was adopted by Lionel. Lex became President. Lana found a hubby and has 2 kids. And Chloe is engaged. Unfortunately in this fairy tale world, Brainiac is Lex's chief adviser, and has put it into his head that the world would be better off Nuked, and rebooted.

Of course this was all some sort of Jor-El illusion, and Clark makes the decision to travel to Krypton in the past, save himself, and seemingly kill Brainiac (with Kara's help).

Clark is then back home, and Lex confronts him about Lana's worsening condition. He tells Clark that the best doctors on the planet have no clue what's wrong with her, and if Clark ever wants to confess something that may help her, just to see him.

Clark is then seen in the Daily Planet looking up medical stuff on coma's. Enter Lois, and a bit of a Clois scene. She's gonna take him to the bar. What a way to celebrate your girlfriend being in a painful coma.

Meanwhile, back at the farm (heh), Kara's drinking milk from the bottle (silly girl), when she's stuck with what appears to be a migraine. She drops the milk on the floor, then falls herself, looks straight ahead, and the episode ends.

I should mention that the last 4 paragraphs of this post all took place over the span of about 15 minutes. It's very, VERY rushed, and almost seems like it would've been better placed in a seperate episode. But hey, what'cha gonna do?

The AU plot isn't filler. It's the plot of the episode.

The AU plot isn't filler. It's the plot of the episode.

And has nothing to do with what's currently happening in the season. It's just a "what if" scenario. Therefore, filler. Not needed.

Not true. It contributed to the show's core mythology.

It shows that Clark does have a place on Earth and Kara couldn't just pick up the slack without him, that Clark is not meant to be with either Lana or Chloe, that Lois is a great reporter and a hero in her own right (and this episode gave a great insight into the Clark/Lois relationship as it stands on Smallville) and that it's not Clark's fault that Lex went bad.

It's also an important episode for Clark in terms of character development because we've had seven years of him blaming himself for the meteor shower and everything else that happened in Smallville and he's just discovered that none of that was his fault at all. This episode should -- and I know that Smallville isn't big on logic, but whatever -- be a turning point for Clark.
