It was perfectly normal, within the Unit HQ, to have silence. None of the residents there were highly prone to screaming or head-banging. When there was noise, it was outside with the training and the weapons, or in one of the dorms; even then those noises rarely rose to anything startlingly elaborate to those who possibly could have heard. The lack of noise held a significant place within the household, followed by many of the regular inhabitants.

For that, Kian was grateful. Under the pigment, he was bruised and he was quite sure his mouth was swollen to twice its normal size. Bruised knuckles, sore muscles... That, too, was perfectly normal.

What wasn't quite normal was the fact that he was nearly melting into the couch. Work, dreams, sparring... things that came with most matches, all of them added to the list of 'Kian was ******** tired' and it finally allowed itself to show, however slightly.

He was leaning against the arm of the couch, elbow against the plush support, chin in elbow and his eyes closed comfortably. Jii was there with them that day (she hadn't appeared too pleased at them beating the living hell out of one another) and she had her head on Kians knee. His free hand was patting at her idly. While the alien wasn't reading or watching anything, he was lost in his own mind instead of being elsewhere in the physical.

Jii whined, flopped to the ground. Kians left eye slid open to peer down at his colorful pet and let himself follow her lead. He grabbed at the magazine that had been sprawled next to him and flipped it open haphazardly. At least it was interesting.

Silence. It held its place. He liked it.

Autsu was warm with content. Oh, this was not to say that he was comfortable, exactly. Indeed, he could find no way to lean against his right arm that did not call up an ache that echoed the rough match he and Kian had enjoyed not ten minutes prior. It was the very lack of comfort that led to the content, though. It was the fact of the sparring and of Kian's current nearness. It was the safety and warmth imbued in the Unit (thanks, in part, to Lissel's constant redecorating), so that he felt that he could sit here, bruised, battered, tired, and still be safe.

If he was on guard, and one could assume he was, it was only in the passive way that a mind such as his was always on guard. He had a book out and open across his knees, and his brow was furrowed as he tripped his way through its tangled phrases. It was, theoretically, a book on the uses and effects of caste systems in various cultures across time and space. He was sure it was fascinating, and enlightening. He was not, however, sure what the hell it was talking about. He read on anyway.

Without moving more than his eyes, he glanced over at Kian, and his gaze lingered there a moment. They had come a long way from chasing Jii through the park, and debating the possibly diabolical nature of Halloween costumes. They had built this place, the two of them. Not with out help, but this was their sanctuary, and Autsu was proud of it. Proud of the both of them, in his way.

And then...

A trick of the light. Or of memory. Or perhaps somewhere, very far a way, there was a prince screaming at a mage, and almost, almost doing the impossible. Reopening a dead connection. The source was unimportant. For a moment, the black band on his finger seemed red, and Autsu went from lazy content to sharp, nervous tension.

This wasn't his.

It could never be his. Not really.

It could be tomorrow. Or a week. Or a year. Or tonight. If nothing else, he owed it to what they'd built to be sure that it continued in his absence. And he could not continue this way... shadowed by a future created in the past and never speaking of it.

He let the book fall closed.

"Anne." His voice was empty. Hollowed out.

Kian was never the most perceptive of people alive. Oh, he could tell you when the temperature changed a single degree in either direction, if a branch snapped or if someone had suddenly choked on a cheeto and died or something else in that horrific nature. That had to do with listening and understanding the physical.

It was things such as the tones of peoples voices or how to understand, how to take their words... It always stumped him.

So while he was able to feel the slight twang that went through his friend and was able to guess that Autsu had either reached a place in his book that he disliked or something uncomfortable had happen, the empty shell of a voice only struck him as mildly odd.

Autsu always had emotion. It may not have always been the right emotion (like Kian would know what the right emotion was, anyway) and it may not always have been blatent, but there was always... something. At least, he had never sounded so empty.

It was a cause for surprise, however mild.

Kian paused in his idle flipping when the others words and actions sunk in, nails scraping briefly against the shining paper. The magazine wasn't closed or thrown down, even when Kian turned to face his friend. It was only a slight turn - his tail would get in the way of anything more severe, but it was aknowledgement of his words, of his desire for... something.

"Tsu?"

Well, he had Kian's attention, at least. That was a start. His eyes fell to his hand again, and he turned it in the light. No. The ring was black. It had not flickered to red a moment ago. He could yet back down, leave the subject unspoken, and so remain, to some extent, safe. Content. He was not displeased with this new contentment, excepting the inevitable knowledge of its temporary nature.

No. There'd be no backing down. He was Sethos's brother, and so appriciated the power of words, spoken and left silent. He feared the power these words might gain, left unspoken too long.

Briefly, he toyed with the idea of a hypothetical. He could ask, perhaps, what Kian would do if he were gifted the ability of return. But no. Because it didn't matter what Kian would do. It wasn't Kian facing this decision. It was Autsu, and there was no decision, despite the illusion of choice he'd allowed himself. The plans were made.

"I would speak with you." He began, carefully. Important, to approach this the right way. He was not unaware of the possible effects of what he was going to say. "You recall the one I served, Ex'Narin?"

Ex'Narin? Ex'- Ah. Narin. The skinny, bald one, the 'pretty' drawing of a reptile he had once been shown, alongside of Tsus older form. His one, his everything. The prince. His? prince.

Kians eyelids flickered, just briefly, at the mention of the other alien - the one who had not been convicted. Instead, he had merely allowed his gaurd (lover? love? friend?) be sent off to an unknown world for punishment.

Oh yes. He remembered Narin.

He held his tongue in check, despite it all, and instead remained quiet for a long moment as he studied his friend. Autsu was not quite right, a little on edge? Usually, Kian would have just sat there in silence for Autsu continue; in this particular place and time, however, he felt he had to say something to usher along whatever it was.

"Yes."
PostPosted: Tue Apr 29, 2008 7:59 pm

If Autsu had wanted a longer response than the one he'd gotten, he wouldn't have been talking to Kian. He and Kian didn't waste words. That was the point, wasn't it?

But it was hard at this moment to show a similar conservation of language. He found himself wanting to babble on some other subject, to talk of the Unit, or warfare, or... anything. He had not been so unsettled around Kian in a long time. Not since they had settled things between them.

That was the problem, of course. Things were settled between them. They had found a rhythm that worked for both of them, a mixture of violence, camaraderie and sex that suited them both perfectly. This would disrupt that rhythm. Autsu was not entirely sure it would not ruin it.

He shifted nervously, closing his wings and adjusting his sore arm to a new uncomfortable position. So, he might ruin it. The point was that the end of this was inevitable, and if they did not face it now, it would be all the more difficult to face it when the time came.

Narin. The b*****d. He made everything difficult. And even the thought of him still made Autsu feel like he'd had his heart ripped from his chest. Same as the day they'd been caught. Same as it ever would be. That was what love was, apparently. The ability to never heal.

"He contacted me. It has been awhile now. I have spent that time considering what he said."

A pause, inevitable, as he gathered courage. Physical dangers were so simple, really. Either they died, or you did.

"He would have me back."

"No."

The word slipped out so quickly, Kian wasn't quite sure who had said it - or what they were saying no to. It was his voice, he figured that out soon enough, but it took several heartbeats for his mind to function and tell him exactly what he was saying no to.

Narin had contacted Autsu. ...a while back. He had said he wanted Autsu back. Would have him back? Will have him back. No question.

There had been no question in Autsus voice when he said that.

"No." He repeated, his tone more sure of itself, firmer under the monotone.

What would happen if Autsu left? There would be... But... There had never been a 'before Autsu' time. It had been Koreshan - then Kian. But with Kian came Autsu. Everything on Gaia was surrounded with him, as there was not a time in his life as Kian that he could remember not knowing Autsu since that day - how long ago? - in the park where they had run after Jii. There would be no 'sameness' to return to. Autsu was that sameness.

Things had changed in Gaia. He had changed. He had a job, pets, technically he had a caring family but behind that all, there had been the solidarity of his comrade, his only one. With him gone, what was there then. The background would be gone and yet Kian knew he was being selfish; he was a selfish person and always had been.

"No, he will not." Always will be.
PostPosted: Tue Apr 29, 2008 9:50 pm

If Autsu had planned this conversation, he may have prepared for the possible reactions Kian would have to it. But he hadn't planned. He'd only imagined he'd seen something, and then forced himself to say words that had waited too long unsaid. He had not prepared arguments, or counter arguments. He hadn't even prepared to explain himself.

Due to lack of planning he had no idea what Kian was thinking, or how to respond to such a firmly spoken denial. There were times when the two of them could communicate in a glance and a word.

This was not one of those times.

"It is not now." He said, not responding to any of Kian's various denials, apparently. After all, what was there to say to them? Kian would say no and he would say yes and Kian would say no and.... well... it was not a cycle he wanted to enter. Eventually, someone would be punched. But then, maybe that was the best way to settle things.

"It will... take time." That was what Narin had said, that it would take time. He had not said how much. They had been interrupted. "It is possible that it can not be done."

Of course, in the end, none of what he was saying mattered, because it did not change what had already been said. Speaking of time was not the same as speaking of staying.

"Comrade, he is the Prince."

His prince.

Punching would probably be the most likely outcome at this point. Neither of them were going to back down - or at least deny anything. What could Autsu say? It couldn't be 'well, darn, Kian! You're right. I'll stay here with you and just tell the man who owns my mind and soul that he can ******** off because YOU said no'.

Of course not. Nothing was so simple or boring as all of that. Kian knew that. In the back of his mind, he knew Autsu was saying it because it was the truth, that Narin wasn't there yet and may never even show up but the possibility loomed. If possibility ever appeared one day and held out its arm for him, Autsu would go to it without a backward glance or regret or argument.

It was easy enough to understand that it all came down to absolutely nothing. It was harder to accept.

So, Kian did what he did best. He hurt people.

"He is a prince. On a planet that sent you here, miles and miles from the place that he banished you from. He is nothing here. The only reason he garners any power on Gaia at all is because you give it to him. He would be an alien, as any other. Not The Prince. Not even A prince." His words were angry and they were short. The poor magazine was going to have rips in it. "You said you shamed him and now he would - no. No."

Another denial and Kian shook his head. There was a little voice in the back of his head telling him to shut up. Instead of following it, his voice became softer and rather confused instead of the biting shots of before.

"If you shamed him, if.. Do you still think you so low as you did when we were smaller?"

Autsu took the words without comment, letting them rain down on him like blows, his expression one of hopeless, patient acceptance. Again, he had no argument to give, no grand defense to raise like a shield against Kian's cutting remarks. He just listened.

And when Kian was done, he was silent a moment, as if waiting for more words to come. He wasn't angry, not in the way he perhaps should have been. He'd been too angry at himself, at Narin, at circumstance for too long. He didn't have any anger left for his comrade, certainly not when Kian's barbs were points he was already familiar with. He'd worked them all out in his head. That was the problem. It just didn't matter.

"I have changed but I am Esuth, still. I took an oath, and I have not been released from it." Another pause, and he lowered his eyes again, studying that damn ring. He raised his head. He was no coward, he could at least face this head on. He would not hide behind the flimsy excuse of a promise made.

"It does not matter, comrade. Oath or not. Low or not. I am not bright, but that does not make me stupid. I know this, now, is better than what I had. But it does not matter."

"He needs me. I am weak, in this." The words he'd used for his father came echoing back, then. "It is in me to bleed for him, until none of me is left, and then find more to give."

Kian stared at his first friend, his only true friend, for what felt like hours. Autsu made absolutely no sense, not a single bit. He was usually logical, fully logical, but this?

What kind of bullshit was he blathering?

He closed his jaw slowly, the one he didn't even know had fell just slightly open, and forced himself to blink. The room was still, quite, and Jii whined a high pitched noise. It felt too heavy. The air was suffocating and he just didn't know what to -

What the ******** kind of bullshit was this?

Kian couldn't say it out-loud. The alien wasn't fluent in swearing in English, nor were there suitable swear words in his native tongue. Instead, he shook his head.

"You are not Esuth. You have spoken, briefly, on him. You are Autsu, too. There are others here who need you. It is not their fault they are not to the status of your prince." Flat, monotone again. An almost accusing tone. Kian was selfish, he was arrogant and self-involved and very possibly a horrible friend and sibling and son, but he was right in this matter. He knew all of these things and he knew he was right.

The dark alien leaned, one arm rising up in Autsus direction. He wanted to grab him by his hair, shake him until he tore a fistful out or to simply punch him until he felt better. What good would it do? He didn't grab him, he didn't shake or punch his friend, no; those nails and the calloused pads of his fingers touched Autsus cheek an almost painful, gentle movement.

It would have been a touching moment if not for the perfectly flat expression on his face and the words who followed.

"Instead of failing him, you fail us." Me. He pulled back and stood, half-turning towards his companion. "Jii. We are leaving."

She stood quickly, whining as she pranced towards the door. Jii, apparently, wanted to escape the tension.

What was the right thing to do, then? Run after him perhaps, beg forgiveness. Or stand and fight and defend the point.

But, no. Autsu let the words hit him, let that brief lingering touch scar him, and watched, his expression flat, as Kian walked away. After all, Kian was the only one who'd ever really been able to get a response out of him, be that response a smile or a frown.

So...

Well...

The chains were cut. Or accepted. Hard to tell.

If nothing else, there was nothing to hold him here now.

Narin would be so pleased.

He should have slumped. He should have cried.

But Autsu only sat, with the perfect posture of a soldier, and stared at the wall with empty eyes.
