Rhinel mused greatly. All this milling around of adults and all he wanted to do was to help! But of course, one of the older stallions shewed him off. This angered him. Certainly he could do just as well as some of them! He may not have the stature of some of them but he couldn't help but think that none of them had the willpower he did. He could get more done with his eyes shut!

However the little foal looked at it he couldn't get over the fact that they thought him no more useful than a fly. He growled and kicked, but none of it was any use. Sighing, he finally turned from the mumbling group to trot off to where he thought his brothers and sister were. Perhaps, what wasn't foreseen, was this strong-willed colt getting distracted. He mumbled and kicked at the ground feeling dejected all at the same time. Didn't his mother and father think he could do it? He wanted to prove to them that he could but just how that was possible he wasn't sure. He wasn't dumb by any stretch of the imagination, but thinking wasn't ultimately his strong point.

The sound of his brother's approaching hoofbeats roused Malachi from his doze. Curled up in a patch of shade not far from where the rest of the family were grazing, he had been almost asleep. Blinking sleepily, the blue colt watched Rhinel. He didn't look particularly happy. Malachi wondered why, until he looked in the direction the spotted colt had come from, and saw the group of stallions. Ah. Rhinel had probably been bothering them. Whatever it was they were doing, they didn't look like they had time to include a foal.

Malachi shook himself and stood up. With another brief glance at the group of adults, he went to meet his brother. "Hey," he said, tilting his head to one side, "what's up?" He wondered if his brother knew what those stallions were doing, and, if not, if anyone would tell him. ...Still, no matter if they didn't. It was daytime, no time to be dozing off, the two of them could go and do something intetresting instead. Malachi shot his parents a glance. They didn't look all that busy. That was a shame; for days he'd been itching to explore the area further, and he'd thought maybe this was his chance, but one of them would surely notice if the two boys disappeared now.

Not far above the pair of colts, a dark-coated filly was coming into land, her eyes trained on the pair of young Aeri. Since leaving home, her flight skills had improved greatly; necessity was after all the mother of invention. Her new found independence had also made a few other things necessary, to the young Jala’s mind at any rate, and one of these things was taking the opportunity for the company of other foals where it came. Adults always wanted to know where her parents were, which led of awkwardness, but more often than not people of her own age were a lot more easy going on the mater.

A little way from the two colts the feather-winged filly touched down, she was getting better at landings too, and trotted to a halt to inspect her potential companions. They looked, she thought, like brothers. Not in coat or bearing especially, but there was something about their manner that indicated either sibship or close friendship. They looked to be about the same age, too, which was always a clue.

They certainly didn’t look aggressive or anything like that, which was good; she’d had a couple of narrow escapes from grumpy foals trying to emulate their parent’s territorial behavior and, as she was rather a slender thing, the gold-eyed creature had beaten a hasty retreat on those occasions.

Smiling slightly to herself, the striped Nequus flapped her wings a couple of times before settling them back by her flanks. Tension thus removed from them, she whickered a greeting to the possibly brothers and stood where she was to await a reaction. Just because they didn’t look aggressive didn’t mean they weren’t after all, and the last thing she wanted was to be too close to back away if things did get nasty.

It had to be the most peculiar sight Rhinel had ever seen, he most certainly wasn't expecting it. He instantly knew the filly didn't belong here but that was what made it so strange and interesting all at the same time. Rhinel stepped back to allow her room and then grinned as if this were an opportunity for mischief, of course to him almost every new encounter was one for mischief.

"And who are you?" He asked bluntly, circling the filly. He then glanced over at his brother and grinned a grin that he knew Malachi knew all too well. "I'm Rhinel." He turned back toward her. "You're not from around here are you?" To one that didn't know Rhinel it might seem a bit intimidating, but this was his way of being friendly and open. He was often over excited and had to know everything which made his fast talk almost normal to those who knew him.

Malachi smiled at the filly. She must be older then them, if her parents were letting her fly around on her own. She was good at it, too; he envied her graceful landing. He really needed to practice, but he had a feeling that grace in the air was never going to be one of his strong points.

The blue colt sighed internally when he saw Rhinel's grin, and followed him over to the dark-coated filly. "Hi," he said to her, temporarily ignoring his brother. "I'm Malachi. Don't mind him," he added, with a nod in Rhinel's direction, "he's always like that. He's nice, really." Turning back to his brother, he shot him a meaningful look. A new friend would be nice; he didn't want the chance to get to know her ruined by Rhinel's over-eagerness, even if the dappled colt meant well. He really wanted to talk to this new arrival - if she was flying around on her own she would know more about, well, everything than he did. And he wanted to know, too. He didn't just envy her agility, he envied her opportunities to explore. Then again, she might just be a local who he hadn't met yet. ...Either way, Malachi decided, he didn't mind. She was still a new person, and that was a good thing. It was certainly more interesting than his day had been so far.

Sekhmet smiled from the orange colt to the blue and back again. “I’m Sekhmet, and no I’m not from around here,” she said with a nod, “this is my first time this deep into D’ob... nice to meet you both by the way.” Good, they did seem to be friendly. Well, the blue one, Malachi, did and she could easily accept that Rhinel was as well; he wasn’t acting as though he planned to attack her, certainly.

“So,” the striped filly smiled at the pair again, “do you guys mind if I hang about with you for a while?” They didn’t seem to be doing anything else, but it was still best to ask rather than just butt in on what might be a private conversation or something. She suspected it wasn’t though; hoped it wasn’t too. It had been some days now since she’d found people to talk to and, though her resolve to keep going remained strong, Sekhmet had to admit to being a little lonely.

She missed her brother, her sister, her mother and her father. The cost of freedom, it seemed, was quite high but when it came down to it, it wasn’t high enough to drive her back. One day she would see them all again, but for now she would content herself with whatever company she found on her travels and besides, these two Aeri seemed nice; it would be good to have new friends to tell everyone about when she did go home.

"Mind?" Rhinel stepped a little closer to the striped girl and couldn't help but smirk. "Of course we don't mind! It's better than those stuffy old stallions anyhow." He tilted his head back to where the group was talking and snorted. "So where are you from?" He looked back to her, still twitching in excitement. This mystery girl had been the most exciting thing that had happened to him in weeks.

Malachi smiled at the dark-coated filly and echoed his brother's response. "Course we don't mind. New people are fun." He paused for a moment, then belatedly added, “It’s nice to meet you, too.” She would be the first filly other than his sister who he would have the chance to have a proper conversation with. Somehow the blue colt had a feeling that Sedna didn’t exactly fit the norm when it came to girls, so he couldn’t judge by his experience of her. Tilting his head to one side, he considered the newcomer briefly. Well, it wasn’t like she was all that different. So far, anyway. Females weren’t a different species, after all, and his mother was nice.

The foal shuffled on the spot a little, and then asked the question that had been bothering him. “How come you’re here, if you’re not a local? I mean… you’re allowed to go off exploring?” He smiled anxiously at Sekhmet, hoping that wasn’t too impertinent a question. She was intriguing, this brightly-marked stranger. He didn’t want to offend her or put her off spending time with them. He thought it was cool that she was out on her own, but she might not realise that. Malachi had a feeling that his parents wouldn’t agree with him on that, either, and he sneaked a glance over his shoulder at the rest of the family. No one appeared to have noticed the young Jala land, or if they had they weren’t concerned by her.

The predominately black filly grinned; great, it was always good to be welcome. “I’m from a little bit north of main D’ob,” she said after a moment with a nod, “pretty close to Ryuten really but not right on top of the humans or anything.” Hu... Should she be lying?... No; running away she’d been willing to do but she wouldn’t deny where she’d come from, it would feel like rejecting her family and she didn’t want to do that.

“I’ve had a lot of freedom lately,” Sekhmet went on after a moment with a grin and a nod to Malachi, “I know how to take care of myself pretty much, so I’m out seeing some of the safer bits of the world. Home was nice, but I felt kinda stifled there. My mother thought it was a good idea for me to get out a bit as well and hey, I’m not about to argue with her... so long as she agrees with me,” the gold-eyed foal concluded, her grin growing and her golden eyes glimmer mischievously.

Grin softening back to a smile, Sekhmet looked from one colt to the other again. Hum, probably best to find out if she was right or not. “So... are you guys brothers?” She missed her brother; she missed all of them really but thinking of brother’s made her think of Andre’s gold stripy face and bright blue eyes. Ah well, she’d see him again in the end, see all of them again. For now, though, this was what she needed to do. Until she found some way to permanently claim her freedom, she would just have to stay away.

"Your mother lets you travel?!" Rhinel shouted excitably. He wished his own mother would do that, or at least give him more responsibility. He hated milling around without a purpose. It made him feel useless which caused him to find something else to occupy his time, usually things that his parents didn't approve of.

Noticing the mischievous glint in Sekhemet's eyes and he couldn't help but grin. This girl could be fun. Better than the stuffy stallions and his parents. Even Hanyx and though Sedna could be fun at times... perhaps even more fun than she. "Yeah.. we're brothers." He replied and turned his head back over him. "And the blue dappled one and the brightly colored one is our brother and sister." He stated matter-of-factly.

Taking a step forward, Rhinel mirrored her mischievous glance. "We could.. go with you? There isn't anything fun going on here. I'd sure like to see the world!"

Malachi's eyes widened. "You live near humans? have you seen any?" He'd only heard stories of the strange two-legged creatures, but he was determined to visit their land someday. Sekhmet was lucky, he thought, amazed: she both got to travel and lived in an exciting place anyway. D'ob was alright, but too quiet for his liking. That was partly what made Rhinel's suggestion sound so attractive.

Go with the pretty filly? Well, it would definitely be exciting. They didn't really know her yet, but she seemed fun. He agreed with his brother's reasoning entirely. The world out there was so much bigger than his experience of it... but...

Malachi sighed. "I'd love to go with you, too, but I'm not sure our momma's quite as... uhm, open-minded as yours." He loved her to pieces, of course, but he knew she was unlikely to agree to such a thing. Not yet, anyway. He couldn't wait to grow up. The blue colt shot a glance at Rhinel, and added, "And we are not going to run off, so don't suggest that.. You know Momma and Dad'd be upset."

Sekhmet gave the pair a lopsided grin; she felt for them, for their adventuring spirits that railed against a comfortable life in one place. “Yea,” she said to Malachi with a nod, “I’ve seen humans a couple of times. They brushed me and fed me elppas, it was pretty cool. As for coming with me...” the black filly looked from one brother to the other, sizing them up. They didn’t seem as though they’d be a burden or anything, but that didn’t mean it was a good idea for them to accompany her.

“I guess you could ask your mother, company on my travles would be nice,” she went on eventually with a wing shrug and a nod, “but like Malachi says, mine is very relaxed. She’s got the same kind of mind as me I think, wanting to get out in the world, and seen as she can’t really she wanted me to be able to.” She felt for the tall mare, she did, but there wasn’t much she could do to help. Sometimes you could only save yourself and hope for the best for the ones who got left behind.

“Still,” the striped Jala went on after a moment with another grin to the other two foals, “even if your parents won’t let you go see the world right away you can always decide to go off when you’re adults... unless there’s any official stuff that’s waiting for you of course.” Even if your family wasn’t an important one you could get stuck in a mating you didn’t want, Sekhmet supposed. Many parents, high or low born, had ambition to rise higher or better their position or the position of their herd after all.

It was something of a sobering thought; that any foal she met and spoke to might end up a playing piece for their parents. When she’d left home, she’d thought it to be something that only happened to people like her, born to mares and stallions of consequence but the gold-eyed filly was swiftly coming to see that this was something of a childish view. Anyone could be manipulated and used by anyone they met. Not a reason to be unfriendly, of course, but definitely a reason to be wary.

Rhinel didn't have Malachi's sentiment for the two-leggers. As far as he was concerned bah to them and let them stay where they belonged. There was a reason their two kinds were separate. Though, visiting Sekhmet's home on the other hand...

Damn Malachi. Rhinel thought to himself when suggesting anything of their mother. He had to go and ruin what could be a lot of fun. Why did the filly have to agree with Malachi? Malachi was certainly too stuffy at times and Rhinel didn't understand why he couldn't loosen up and have a little fun.

Stepping forward on a hoove he began, "Who said anything about running away? I love Mama as much as you and I wouldn't do that to her. All I'm suggesting is an afternoon of fun. Besides... she and Papa are too busy with the stallions. She won't miss us." He looked from one to the other. He hoped he wouldn't have to beg, and well, if that didn't work he'd try something completely different. He already had a plan.
PostPosted: Mon May 05, 2008 5:27 am

Malachi narrowed his blue eyes at his brother. Would that really work? Would Rhinel be content with an afternoon of fun and actually agree to come back? He wasn't sure. But... The blue colt looked over at Sekhmet again. This was too good an opportunity to pass up. It would be worth it even if they got into trouble later. And maybe if they went off on their own and were fine their parents would let them do it more often! He glanced back at them; they still seemed oblivious.

Turning back to his companions, Malachi nodded. "Okay, then. Let's do this." He grinned. "...where shall we go?"

He couldn't help secretly being a little worried about Sekhmet's mention of 'official stuff'. Since Nyx was their group's leader, one of her children would be her heir - that definitely counted as official stuff. And was likely to be a bit restrictive... He wondered about that. Sedna was too unpredictable to make a good leader, he thought, and Hanyx was probably too quiet. That left him and Rhinel. He couldn't really see either of them in that position. Malachi frowned to himself. Well, it wasn't an issue yet. They would see what happened in the future.

Sekhmet nodded her agreement to the orange colt’s idea. “Well that sounds like fun, yea. Hum...” Where could she take them that they could get to and from in an afternoon? The days were getting long now, so they had a good stretch of light left to them. The filly’s frown deepened as she tried to work out where the places she’d visited were in relation to here; she’d been zig-zagging somewhat in the hopes that if anyone was looking for her and got word that she’d been seen somewhere that information wouldn’t make her easy to find.

“Oh!” The exclamation left her lips as she recalled the spot; it wasn’t really all that far off but the pair of Aeri might not have been there before all the same. “There’s a little waterfall not too far from here,” she informed her companions with a nod. “It’s not tall enough to be dangerous or anything, you can safely jump off the top into the plunge pool, and at the sides you can stand under the falling water. I was there a couple of days ago but if I’m right it’s actually not far from here. We could get there in an afternoon, if you guys fancy it.”

Sounded good to her; she’d been reluctant to leave the secluded space with its shady trees and plentiful fruit. If one of the brothers before her had a better idea that was fine, but she liked the idea of heading back to the waterfall. If they didn’t want to go there, she decided, she would go herself once she’d parted company with them.
