I want to learn tarot badly. But first I need to buy a deck.
Does anyone have any suggestions for what deck I should go for?
Or is there a place online where I can sample decks and see
which one is the best for me?

I don't know if there's any place online but I would say look at the decks when you go to buy one, try to feel them out with your mind and pick the one that most catches your attention and exudes the most energy to you.

When I bought my tarot cards a while back, I wasn't actually in the market for them. I was at a bookstore and I could feel the energy coming off them when I picked them up. I felt like a total dork, but I had to buy them. Later my mother told me that I was going to hell for talking to the devil, but I don't think that my deck is particularly demonic.
I wouldn't buy anything online. You really have to touch them to see if you're compatible. Pretend you're Harry Potter going wand shopping.

I recently bought a deck for my fiance. He'd lost a card from his old deck, so I bought him the Necronomicon tarot deck (available in the Occult section of most Books-A-Million stores), which he had been wanting for some time.

He's been sleeping with them under his pillow to attune them to him. Now they basically do what he tells them to.

maybe once you get them you can do a reading on her once you get the hang of it and get the cards to work for you and tell her things she knows to be true and freak her out XD

Hehehe.
Okay so buying online is a no-no.
I wonder if Borders has an occult section. >_<
I wish there was a specific shop for the occult in our area.
If there is, I don't know about it. =[
And I would LOVE to freak out my mother. xD
How long does it take to get the hang of it usually?

I got my deck at Barns&Noble but Borders has them to.
Book stores don't call it the occult section though its the New Age section and its part of the religious section because of the Wicca and witchcraft books ^__^

and usually it depends on the person, I think it took me a few-months to year to fully get the hang of it, but the longer you have the deck and the longer you use it the better it works. I've had my goddess deck for..hmm..it'll be 6 years this June, they work great for me! But I got another deck for my birthday year before last from my friend Mandee but they don't work so well for me..

Well, I've heard tell many times that you shouldn't buy your own tarot deck. It's supposed to be bad luck of some sort.
I've bought two myself.
I saw you mentioned wondering if Borders carried that kind of stuff. They most certainly do. Borders usually has a very good "New Age" section where you can find a few different tarot decks. I personally got my first deck at a Waldenbooks.
My second deck, I bought online. I ordered it from the Llewellyn's Online website. They are a very good source if you want to get books as well. I have had trouble with that deck since I bought it. Mine and the deck's energies just don't mix like they do with my other deck.
So I completely agree with not buying tarot cards online. You should go to a store, look at what they have, and pick the one that appeals most to you. Like any other magical tools, I think it's best to pick it out in person (or meet it in person, as I prefer to say), so you know what energy you're bringing home with you.

my very first deck is going on 20 years old. it's the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck

Personally I do not believe in that sort of thing because there's so much scientific explanations that disprove of the use of Tarot Cards but my father is into this sorta thing and he uses them, any major book store should have a deck or two. If you have a Borders near where you live, you'll find a crap load of them.

my mom uses them. she wants one of the rider-waite decks i believe. i wanted to get her one but then i remembered that it might not work for her. i would say buy your own, that way you dont end up with one that dosent work for you. like the others mentioned. feel the vibs off of it to determine if it will work for you. smile

Actually the Books-A-Million in my area has an honest-to-god Occult section. It has its own header on the wall and everything. New Age is an entirely different part of the store, for some reason.

I didn't feel much of anything from the decks in the store, so I may just not feel things like that consciously.
