I was assigned as the trumpet section leader halfway through my second year
Next season, because all the misfits are quitting ( the people who gave me a hard time for being tougher on them than other section leaders) I plan being stricter next season---A couple of questions for eveyone's amusement?

-What role do you play as a leader in band? (Drum major? Section leader? etc)

-How would you treat a section leader younger than you, if they were being tougher on you than other, older section leaders?

-Are you trying for a higher position next season? I plan on being Brass Captain when Our current one graduates.

-Does your section listen to you?(lols who's does?)

-how did you gain your role as a leader?
(I just happaned to be the best player and marcher in the section)

- I was also wondering forms of punishment (that came out wrong)
like, besides push ups? My section never listens to me---I have yet to get it through their numskulls that they have a section leader *falls dead*

Just as a quick note, it sounds a little unfair to be stricter when all of the people giving you trouble are leaving.

*In high school, I was section leader. The age issue never came up when I was there, since section leaders were usually seniors. Since I've left, that may have changed. In college, I'm told I was being looked at for squad leader. Age only comes up if people are jerks (which did happen this year)

*High school - I didn't want to be drum major. I liked being on the field, so I was fine as section leader.College, girls don't get drum major and you get chosen for leadership positions. You're allowed to reject them if you don't want them.

*High school - No. My section got overrun by 14 year old brats who tried to mutiny me. It took them until the last game to realize why I was so hard on them. It was absolutely ridiculous

*I got section leader by interviewing for it. I ended up sharing it with another girl because the 8th graders were just that big of bitches, and I couldn't always be there for other reasons.

*Punishments didn't work. Really, I ended up just guilting them and informing them that it was their own fault if they sucked.

I'm interviewing to be the pic S/L right now. but i'll probably get it, since no one is running!

I would treat a secton leader with respect no matter how young they were unless they were total brats. then i'd go to my band director.

no, im not trying for a higer position, cause my section needs me! lol, also i don't wanna be drum major.

so far, my section listens to me.

no one else wanted it, so i got it.

i make them play something by themselves if they get it wrong too many times.

role in the band?...well.im in it...that has to count for something

a section leader younger than me....i would treat them the same..unless they were abnormally hard on us...you dont have to compensate for the fact that you're younger by being herder on them..just get their respect....

higher position..why yes...im auditioning for assistant drum major and clarinet section leader..

well...im in the clarinet section.....need i say more?....our section has the most issues....and....we've had our section leader leave a sectional once before....it was.....bad...

gain my role as a leader?...well for assistant drum major...there are workshops from 4-6pm every thursday.....we only have..about 4 left....for the audition...we have to write a 2-3 page essay on why we want this position..get a letter of reccomendation...and write a speech that lasts around 4 maybe 5 minutes...on the same topic as the essay...we have have to be able to conduct through the star spangled banner or our fight song....and theres a routine that we have to do that includes macework callign commands and basic marching stuff....all of this...being the speech...the routine ...and the star spangled banner.....are done in front of the band..because the band chooses assistant drum major......for section leader....theres a 2 to 3 page essay on why you want section leader....and he has you play soem scales for him...and idk about this year...but last year...you had to do some sort of like..community service for the band..like one person...repainted all the shelves in the instrument room...

punishment..well..pushups are all fine and dandy....but....dont give them pushups for stupid crap.....and..if ur gonna do it.....everybody should do the pushups as a whole...like..if someone is late for a sectional...dont give them pushups.....have them stand there....while the rest of the section does the pushups for them..tis a little technique i learned at bootcamp....other punishment?....well...thats really all....that i can think of...

I'm a drum major. I am of the philosophy to make people like you rather than be afraid of you. If you're nice, positive, encouraging, but can be strict if required, I find the band/section works better for you than if you're constantly yelling, criticizing, and punishing. I STRONGLY encourage you to do the same. I don't know anyone (well, maybe one or two) who would work better in a strict section than in a friendly one. As all of the slackers are gone from your section, there is no reason to be overly strict.
My suggestion is to use PSP, or praise suggestion praise. Instead of criticizing people (like "work on your mark-time" or worse), you give praise before and after (ex. "Great posture (insert name here)! You look great! It might help if you kept your chin a little higher though...yes! Amazing"). That's always worked for me.
If you are looking for something other than push-ups for an exercise, I'd suggest arm circles. They're great for marching people, as it strengthens your arms, making it easier to hold up your horn. They're also not as punishing as push-ups, so people won't be as likely to complain. Our band makes their share of groans and moans, of course, but I haven't had anyone tell me they couldn't stand arm circles. If anyone puts their arms down before its over, you tell them you'll start again.

I'll be section leader of pit next year...if I'm not needed on drumline for cymbals or whatever.

I'm usually more serious off the field than I am on. XD

And I'm friends with the people coming up into the section, so it shouldn't be too hard for me...hopefully.

~I was recently named Captain of the Flag Corps for next year! That means I'm junior captain, and the one that was junior last year will be senior captain. Not that that counts for much, but whatever.

~Hmm, I'd probably burst into tears like a bitchy little girl. Just kidding, I guess I would still listen to them. Especially since thats what I'll be going through next year gonk !

~Well, there isn't really an Auxillary Captain. I'm pretty much as high as I can possibly go.

~I had to try out against 3 other girls, one being my best friend. Another one was really close with me, and the other was just.... as slutty whorefaced idiot. So I really competed against 2 others.

Well, anyways, I had to choreograph an entire routine and preform it in front of our 2 directors, the middle school director, and some woman I had never seen before. We also had an interview, we had to have 2 letters of reccomendation, and a 2 page essay on why we wanted to be captain.

~Last year, we all caused a ruckus because our junior captain made us do pushups for being late from break.
But for the whole band (incl. Flags), if you are late, miss a practice, don't turn in something, etc., you don't get 3rd Quarter off.
Which is a big deal.
