A small black cub sat staring with bright red eyes at the river that flowed lazily before her paws. It was one of those fixtures in her life, like the towering cliffs behind her full of caves where her family lived, but she wondered sometimes where it came from, and where it was going. She wondered to, why the river's sister plunged so recklessly over the edge of cliffs to meet with her, the pair of them forming a bigger, stronger river that wound off through the trees.

Hippolyta, daughter of Queen Kiuma and sister to Oiorpata, Kivutar, and Pariya, often wondered things like that. She wondered a lot of things, the little mind taking joy in being active, but there was no restlessness to it. Knowledge was nice, but it wasn't the center of her world. The cub wrinkled her nose as she giggled softly to herself, displaying a little of her playful side. The giggle reminded her of her sisters and she turned her head to look around her, giving her tail a flick.

Where was everyone on such a nice morning? Still sleeping? Lazy heads... Up with the sun, that was Hippy. She could hardly stand to remain in the dark longer than necessary.

Emerging from the shadows of the caves came yet another cub, carrying the comforting color that signaled they were Kiuma's brood. This cub held her head high, but not in a manner that made her look superior. She had a slightly sarcastic look on her face that said "Yes, and...?".

"You shouldn't be out here alone, Hippo," Kivutar called to her sister as she padded towards her. 'Hippo' was just one among the many nicknames she gave her sister, let alone her other siblings. She'd been scolded by Kiuma before for such teases, but Kivutar continued calling them by their nicknames. They were loving nicknames, not ones meant to be rude! "Mom might be worried not finding you in the cave."

Hippolyta wrinkled her nose as she turned to hiss at her dark sister.

"My name is Hippolyta, not Hippo. If you're gonna use a nickname, at least use a better one." She grumbled, slapping a paw at the rocky ground to send a pebble flying at Kivutar. It wasn't ment to hurt, or even to hit her, but more for show. The pair of them were much a like, both in looks and temperament, but they had key differences in each as well.

"And besides, all Mother has to do is look outside. I made sure I was in sight... I don't wanna to be yelled at." Her face slipped into a childish scowl. "And what are you doing out here then, huh? If there are two of us missing, she'll be doubly worried!"

The idea has a childish sort of logic to it and it certainly made sense to Hippolyta.

The cub smirked as she saw the pebble hit her square in the chest. It did give a slight twinge of pain, but nothing she couldn't shake off. She was more amused at this reaction when all she did was mention her nickname. Veeery interesting...

"Oh, don't worry about little old me, I'm here to keep an eye on you, in case anything... happens." Just what did Kivutar have planned for this morning? One would think she'd be more of a spectator, but judging by her careful word choice, she had something up her sleeve. Something.. something bad.

Hippolyta frowned at her sister as she stalked closer, stiff legged with annoyance.

"I'm the older sister, I should be looking out for you!" She grumbled, giving Kivu a gentle cuff upside the head that was really just a ruffling of her fur. Rough, if affectionate. The word choice was slow to sink in and when it did, Hippy came to a stop and sat down, her little black backside plopping into the stones of the shore.

"What do you mean, in case anything happens? Do you know something I don't?" She really didn't like the thought of that... she hated being out of the loop or having someone know something she didn't. "Tell me what you know!" She said, waving a paw at her sister.

The smaller cub gave a shudder as she felt Hippolyta's make paw contact with her. If there was anything she hated, it was physical contact of any sort. She shook off the paw and slinked away from her, a smile growing on her face.

"You know what lies over the cliffs, correct?" she finally asked, eyes flashing with mischief. "A horrible, rock-filled, plunging chasm of death known as a waterfall. The water pounds at the rocks day and night until they're either worn away or extremely sharp and dangerous. And suppose one of us plays in the river, when suddenly we're swept away? I know I don't like playing in water," She licked her paw and dragged it over her cheeks, before shaking her head to rid it of any dust or bugs.

Hippy frowned at her sit as she shifted on her behind. It was true, she didn't like to splash around in the shallows occasionally, though Mother was forever warning them that the river was dangerous and not to go in it without an adult, but... well, with only Mother, Baala, and Kannah to do the work of feeding and caring for the cubs, chances to go play in the water didn't come around too often. It was much easier to just sneek off by herself... though, she always kept to the shallow parts. The black girl wasn't stupid.

"Yeah, I know there is a waterfall over there. We can hear it from here, you know. And we've both heard from Mother over and over again how dangerous it is.... Nothings going to happen to me, ok?" She snorted as she shook her head, soft ears flopping against her skull. "I think you're just trying to scare me into leaving you alone... but its not going to work!" She hissed at her sister, grinning sinisterly. "I'm keeping my eyes on you."
