my inventory has every starter item (including peasant sets)
when counting up, excluding the peasant items, I think that I come up with 198 items. So, +9 to include the peasant items. (I actually came up with 199 but that must have been a miscount since the sets are in three and 199 is not divisible evenly into whole numbers by 3)
Does anyone else have that many useless items that they don't really ever plan on equipping? (I also have a full set of the paper bag items that you get for exchanging the paper trash, think I wore the white paper cat band, and the monster paper bag once as well...)

Not that many, but I tend to keep one of everything: sometimes, when you don't have many clothing items (I seem to have a ridiculous clothing:accessory/item ratio) cheap, free or unattractive items come in handy for filling in gaps with a certain colour.
