When it comes to police use of force, how much is too much? And how should it be determined whether exessive force was used?

I believe that police brutality isn't as common as people think, and of course I say this from personal experience/observation. However, I am aware that it exists and when it does happen, it goes beyond excessive. Unfortunately, the media isn't always there to expose it, so determining excessive force is problematic.

I have to disagree with you. Police brutality is very high in rates now a days. Are they reported or even spoken about by the victim? Not always which is the reason why many states don't get the news of it.

Living in NY I see way to many wrong doings by those we appointed protectors (police).

- slam-skull as for your questions. If there is a riot or gang relateted fights. Then certain measures need to be played. Unfortunately it means police force will be played in these situation.

I am against police brutality. I believe that even the slightest bit of wrong doing by the police is already way to much.

It's worse in some areas, rather low in others. Bad: Colorado Springs Colorado. I know. Believe me I know.

It just really depends on where you're at.

LAPD is just plain brutal. But then, they are totally outnumbered and underfunded. They need more cops and money, fast.

SFPD, or "Bum Wanglers," deal with the homeless.
People (locals AND tourists) J-walk.

Here's the thing people don't realize about cops... when they are driving next to a car with tinted windows, they can't see who is inside the car. They don't know if a gun is being pointed at them. When they pull you over, they're scared. They have no idea what you're going to do, what you're going to reach for, and what's going to happen. They have to control the situation by being stern and intimidating.

Then, how do we KNOW how "high" or "low" the rates are?

That's precisely why I said: "... the media isn't always there to expose it, so determining excessive force is problematic".

And Ladyguara is correct, it depends on where you live.

Being intimidating is one thing. I have no problem with that. Rodney King is the kind of thing I am talking about.

i agree with you there but here is one more recent

the may day beating last year in MacArthur Park i understand that people in the rally provoked police but was that justified for police to beat anybody they caught up to? i mean instead of just getting those who provoked police they just went on a beating spree.

I believe the pigs are way to power hungry and they use the fact of them being a pig to their advantage and then think they're all powerful and just do what ever they want, its power abuse, and authority misuse. There are so many screwed up incidents in which pigs killed defenseless people, some even have been handicap. Recently in santa rosa a town a 14miles or so from here there was a mentally ill man who had a knife and he hadn't taken his meds, so the pigs show up and he starts to approach them and he wasn't threatening them, and they shot him 20 times or so. another thing that happened not to long a go was when a pig had a lady in the back of his patrol car and tasered her to death saying she was trying to resist arrest, even though she was already handcuffed and in the back of the car. Then for another, there was a mentally ill handicap man who showed up to a BBQ uninvited, the pigs where called, cause the guy had a knife and a broom and he was in a wheel chair so the pigs said he was trying to attack them so they killed him, the problem is how the hell would the guy even be able to attack if hes in a wheel chair and has his hands full, i mean the pigs would rather kill someone then maybe at worst get a cut from a knife.
