Mother's boyfriend accused of murder as 2-year-old dies following beating

YORK, Pa. - A 2-year-old girl died after being beaten with a video game controller by her mother's boyfriend, police said Tuesday. Darisabel Baez's mother overheard the beating Sunday but did nothing until she realized the girl was unconscious, police said.

The girl was pronounced dead late Monday at Hershey Medical Center, police Lt. Ron Camacho said.

Homicide was added to the list of charges against Harve L. Johnson on Tuesday; he was already in jail on counts including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.

The girl's mother, Neida E. Baez, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

Bruises
It was clear from the bruises and other injuries on the little girl's body that Sunday was not the first time she had been abused, Dauphin County coroner Graham Hetrick told WGAL-TV. He said it was one of the worst cases of child abuse he has ever seen.

Baez, 19, called for an ambulance Sunday and said Johnson had brought the unconscious child to her, limp and wet from an attempt to revive her in a bathtub, a police affidavit said.

Johnson, 26, acknowledged beating the girl with a video game controller but did not say why, police said. Baez said Johnson had abused the girl in the past and that she heard the girl scream after Johnson beat her Sunday, according to the affidavit.

Detective Dana Ward said Baez was charged because she did not intervene or try to get help for Darisabel.

Johnson and Baez remained in custody Tuesday. His bail was set at $200,000; hers was $25,000.

Through police, family members declined requests for interviews Tuesday. Court officials said they did not know whether Johnson and Baez had lawyers to speak for them.

We've heard horror stories about adoption (like that woman who adopted several retarded children for financial benefits and then kept them in cages), but this is a case when the biological mother is unfit. Everyone supposes mothers are all nurturing and overprotective, that they'd never let anything happen to their children. That is a mother's instinct after all, right? This girl was only nineteen--that makes her seventeen when she gave birth--definitely not ready for the role of mother as she aptly proved (though there are some young ladies who can handle it, I know). I'm just wondering how old the boyfriend was. I keep getting the impression he had to be quite a bit older than her (five years, around there) so that he could support them and still have leisure time enough to play video games and then beat this adorable toddler--and old enough so the mother would fear intervening.
It's upsetting. Such a short and terrible life, that could have been prevented. She need not have endured such suffering, whether it be by giving her up to more deserving (hopefully better) parents or by terminating her life before the misery began.
Rrrrr, this makes me emotionallll.

I can empathize with your not wanting her have never felt any kind of pain like that, but saying "If only she'd had had an abortion" .... just is kind of wrong imo.
I mean, it was the boyfriend who did the abusing/killing - not the mother.
For all we know the mother could have been being abused to and was too afraid to do anything.
The thread title is going to be attacked and ripped apart by the PL'ers fyi.

Maybe it should be more of a "If only children never had to feel such pain"
OR "If only she could have been saved"

Well, that is mostly my sentiment. But still. The mother's life is forever changed because of this, too, and she'll be given a jail term probably.
I'll change it... I have to admit I was pretty worked up when I posted this and now that I've calmed down a bit, I realized it is pretty harsh.
But I didn't know we had lifers here! (x

19... Geez, that's my age. Poor woman. Poor girl. That's a horrible, sad, gruesome story.

That's almost hypocritical, though I'm not sure if that's really the right term in this case. That (s?)he can make demeaning comments and you can't threaten them (in self defense, really!).

No he actually meant it and some other sexist crap too.

The thing is, because he helped with the creation of the PL/PG subforum, they made him a mod, so he banned me. lol

I can't remember what specific thing it was that I said, I just know I got real pissed off and started ranting.

It was a thread about vegetarianism and the abortion debate. Basically, one poster was asking how it's possible to be a vegetarian and pro-choice (when the real question is "How the ******** do you care about a z/e/f being killed but not a cow?!") and some pro-choicers were replying and the lifers were mostly like "LOLZ VEGETARIUNS". Well, this one girl started going on and on about how humanely animals are killed and how good they have it on farms and how factory farms are actually not bad at all such and I, being in the "********' psycho" stage of my vegetarianism, got pissed, Apparantly this girl thought that "The Silent Scream" was perfectly credible and that PETA propaganda was not*. I wonder why?**

*Neither one of them are, actually, but PETA is actually more accurate.

Well, I had stopped by to look at the usual B.S. (I think someone had posted a link to a thread that was funny/crazy/sad.) and I saw that there was a thread asking how people could be Pro-Choice and Vegetarian, so I stopped by to defend my views. Which turned into me losing my temper.

*looks at your sig*

You know what the only sad thing about it was? They started talking about the Futurama episode "The Problem With Popplers" and I had some things to say about that, but by that point I was banned, so I couldn't!

I'm semi-vegetarian, but not because I care about not killing the cute animals.

Just like I bike everywhere and rarely use my car but it's not because I'm trying to boycott oil.

As far as I'm concerned, eating meat or not eating meat won't help stop cruelty to animals. One hamburger not being eaten is just one hamburger that will be thrown into the dumpster because it's rotten. It's our fight to make the humane treatment of animals a priority in the legislation of this country that will do far more in helping to advance the humane treatment of animals.

I get annoyed when people try to group me in with the tree-hugging hippies. I'm not. And I'm not really even doing most of the "alternative" stuff for Big Reasons. I'm simply living my life according to how I feel it best should be lived, and if I can help others live their lives according to how they feel, that's just an added bonus.

But I digress.

Some people should NOT have kids. And most of the children you see in foster and adoptive homes who have been abused, neglected, and hurt immensely are the products of these things.

All you need to do is read some of the journals of people who do Child Welfare or Child Protective Services careers and you'd have enough rage at the depravity of humanity to fill the world.
