Old Silverback bats a fish out of the water and tears into it hungrily. It's a rather large fish, as big as they get in the river, but it does little to appease his gnawing hunger. With a growl he stalks back down the river bank to where the young ones are learning how to hunt fish in a small pool. {Let's go children,} he growls, {I'll teach you how to bring down some real game.}

Cartography, however, is feeling rebellious. Besides, he's been stalking this one salmon for the past quarter of an hour!
{Yeah. Okay. In a minute,} he says distractedly. {I'm a little busy at the moment!}

{In a minute, Khala! Sheesh! Come here, you stupid salmon...aHA!! Gotcha, you stupid icthyoid!!!}
Fish clenched in his jaws, Cart trotted down the bank to Old Silverback. {Okay, but before we go fishing some more, may I eat my fish? It took me ages to catch the silly thing!}

{Well hurry up, Cart!} Freckles snaps. {Don't you remember that delicious red stuff Old Whatchamacallit gave us after we first hatched? I don't know about you, but I definitely want some more of that. Less bones!} She doesn't bother to wait for a reply, she turns to Old Silverback. {So what are we going to hunt first? Will it be something big? Tender? Juicy?}

Cart paused. {Fine,} he replied. {But lemme finish my fish.} He gobbled it down in a few bites. {Phew, somehow I thought it was bigger than that! I'm still hungry!}

{That's why we're going to go hunt properly. Be quiet, all of you. Do your best to make no noise, and do as I do.} Old Silverback crouches down low to the ground and stalks off.

Cart crouched low to the ground and silently followed OS. {Like this?} he murmured in an almost undetectable voice.

{Yes, like that,} Old Silverback whispers back, heading away from the stream. I'll have to pull something clever here, he thinks to himself, they are young and inexperienced and will muck everything up if I don't. He heads into a dense thicket of bushes, wriggling along his belly and pausing every now and then. He turns to the young ones following him. {Wait here. I will chase some prey down this way. When I say "go," come out and attack them. Go for their throats and the back of their legs. Do your best to avoid getting kicked.} And with that, he heads off, not bothering to wait for their response. He continues to crawl along his belly until he is well out of sight, at which point he stands up and shakes himself off. {All right,} he mutters to himself, {time for some real hunting.}

Cart waited. He wondered where the others were. {Do your best to avoid getting kicked}, he said, Cart thought. Kicked by what? I don't trust him...Where are those females?

Freckles crawls through the brush, slightly lost and bewildered, but soon catches a glimpse of vivid red fur. Aha! She crawls over to Cart. {Man, I hate waiting!} she says in a low growl. {I hope he can steer them over here soon. Me, I'm all for some action.}

Finally! Crouching low to the ground, Old Silverback works his way around a herd of deer. Once they are between him and the younglings, he starts to move towards them in a crouching run. Started, one of the deer jerks its head up to stare at him, amazed to see this odd intruder - it really has been a long time since we roamed these hills - before running off in alarm. The other deer follow suit, and Old Silvberback runs after them, nipping at their heels and trying to herd them in the general direction of the younglings. This would be so much easier if I had a proper pack to work with, he thinks to himself, but only allows this brief thought before returning to the task at hand. It's been a while since he's been able to try the old ambushing trick, and he's rather looking forward to it. There, one quick dodge on their right flank and they'll head right for bushes where the younglings are lurking. {NOW!} he shouts, and leaps onto the back of one of the stragglers. He extends his claws, digging into the flesh of the struggling deer, and bites it right behind the neck, too distracted to pay attention to whether or not the younglings headed his signal and attacked.
