And Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera movie has gotten a critic's average of....

a.... C!

Not bad, not great. And concidering the appeal of 85% of all other movies currently showing in first and second run theatres, I'd say that's excellent.

Of course it would have merited at LEAST a B- if Michael Crawford were playing the Phantom, but there's no use whining about it now.

I personally haven't seen it yet because there is 3 inches of snow on the ground with an expected 5-7 more by sundown. Huzzah for the lake-effect. Maybe I'll find someone crazy enough to take me by the end of the day so I can throw in my two cents for you all, but until then, what are your takes on it, select city-dwellers?

Micheal Crawford is to bloody OLD to play that part anymore. It would be creepy seeing him trying to win the heart of like an 18 year old girl (which actually is around the age that girl was when she started the movie). He's highly over-rated anyways. I saw him in Dance of the Vampires, and I don't see why everyone raves about him.

I am dying to see this movie! But I can't get out to see it for awhile. The closest theatre to me that is showing it is almost an hour away. DAMN LIMITED RELEASE!

I just saw the movie and (minus a few problems) it was wonderful (in my opinion)

*gasp* Dare you take the name of Michael Crawford in vain?!

In all seriousness though, the following that man has is DAMN loyal. It crushed us all that he was not the Phantom. The emotion he put into the part was dazzling to the point I loathed Christine for breaking his heart. Besides, the Phantom was supposed to be older, wasn't he? Depressed and deprived of a muse and of any human contact whatsoever? And not a tan, handsome, strapping young lad. I mean, they could have atleast gotten some no-name gorgeous goth boy.... *drools*

I just got back from seeing the movie, as well.

A few minor things that made it average, but I thought it was very well done.

Older... yes
So much older that it's just plain CREEPY... no

Vocally, he might still be able to play the part, but time is a b***h and I speak from experience. I saw him in "Dance of the Vampires" about two years ago and seeing him with that younger girl was just wrong.
*shutters at the memory of it*

Though they should have gotten someone a BIT older to play the role, or done a little more make-up tricks with the guy in it now.

LOL! Hey- it sounds great in German! But, then I have no clue what the hell they are saying. I stay away from the English version...

I'd love to see the Film, but I'd have to fly to a neighboring island to see it. I just have to wait till it's full release on January 21st. Poopy...

And for the Record, I'd have to agree that Micheal Crawford is now a bit too old to play the Phantom, but he is the first Phantom and the best (if you ask me). Mr. Butler isn't bad (I'm going off the soundtrack) and the film Phantom is of course going to differ then the stage Phantom- to each his own I say.

I still want to see it really bad though. gonk

If you really wanna get all technical and go by the book, Erik (that's the Phantom, for you non-Leroux people) is actually around fifty, canonically. And though I *am* indeed a rabid fan of Michael Crawford, he mightn't have been the best in the role...might make Erik seem like a *****, which he isn't, and...yeah.

But I'm going to go see it on Monday...I'll tell you my own opinion of Mr. Butler then.

yeah, i read an article that said Schumacher wanted Erik to be around 30 looking for the movie (i also figure so people wouldn't see Erik as a *****)

Book Erik and Stage Erik are also pretty different to start with as well. Its like Book Elphie vs. Stage Elphie, pretty different really. And, both characters of the stage versions have been changed so they are more 'friendly' and 'sell-a-ble'; and most likely would/are made even more so for film. Or, at lest that's what I understand to usually happen.

I thought that it was a great movie (minus some time/plot issues) and was well done. And Erik isn't supposed to be a ***** because Christine is supposed to be around 23 or so, but there is a 16 year old Christine (Emmy Rossum) in the movie. That is probably why they made the Phantom younger.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 28, 2004 12:14 pm

I finally got to go see the movie and I am pleased with it! There was a major timing issue I found, a screwed up plot point, and you could sometimes tell tambre differences between vocal takes in Rossums voice. Maybe that's just me because my dad produces music and teaches me these things.

And did anyone but me notice that the phantom was frickin' TAN? Like tanner-than-Raoul tan? He's been living in the catacombs of an opera house upward of 20 years and he looks like he got back from a week in the Carribean. I undersand there's got to be some artistic liscense and everything. It just struck me funny.

It really didn't bother me too much, the out of place parts. I was happy with Butler the choice of phantom. He actually kind of sounded like Michael Crawford, but with a softer voice and a lot less vibrato. Raoul looked a lot less like Fabio than I thought he would, guessing from the pictures of him in the riding pants and the undone fluffy shirt. And Christine was awesome but I couldn't push the fact out of my head that she looks disturbingly like my cousin whose name is, coincidentally, Christine.

Just got back from seeing it. It was good... I liked it just about as much as the actually Broadway show.
One thing I REALLY liked was when I saw the show, there were parts that confused the heck outta me but the movie REALLY cleared things up for me. Things like where the Phantom came from and the entire thing about Christine's father I lost when I saw the show.
I had really big hopes though that the one thing that makes me not like the show was gonna be fixed, but nope, it was there. The main reason I am not to fond of "Phantom" is that I hate how at points 15 people are singing different parts all at the same time and I can't understand a single word that any of them are saying. I hate that about the show.
All the actors I thought were great... except the guy that played the phantom. He was NOT the phantom of the opera! He was a pretty boy! Ugh! He's voice was great, but he just didn't look right. And they needed to make him more deformed under that mask. It wasn't so scary under there.
Masquerade was a big old disappointment to.

Oh! And if someone will be so kind to answer a question for me?
What the heck does it mean to “keep your hands at the level of your eyes”
???
