So I was watching some of yahoo!'s news clips when the title "Classmates rally around 14 yr old girl accused of killing her newborn"
I followed the link back to the original new site and found this:http://www.khou.com/Quote: BAYTOWN, Texas— A 14-year-old girl who gave birth in a Baytown middle school bathroom earlier this week said Friday that she never knew she was pregnant. According to a Pearland attorney who is representing the girl, she just turned 14 about two months ago. The girl told the attorney that the morning of the birth, she had gone to the school nurse complaining of stomach cramps. The nurse reportedly gave the girl a heating pad and told her to lie down, but she ended up going back to class. The girl said she eventually went to the restroom, and the next thing she knew there was blood everywhere. The lawyer said his client had no clue what was happening to her and never realized she was pregnant, let alone that she had just given birth. Yoakum also said his client did not kill her child, and that she plans to cooperate with police because she wants investigators to know the truth. Meanwhile, an autopsy on Friday confirmed that the baby boy was alive when he was born. Cedar Bayou Junior High school officials said the first time they learned of the pregnancy was when a student that was in the restroom with the teen rushed to the school nurse asking for help. Authorities have not announced what, if any, charges the girl will face. Killing an infant is a capital crime in Texas, but 14-year-olds are too young to be eligible for the death penalty, said Geoffrey Corn, an assistant professor at South Texas College of Law. The incident came just three days after another 14-year-old girl delivered a stillborn fetus in the bathroom of an airplane on her way back to Houston from a middle-school field trip. For more information, I did some searching on the site and found various reports on the same thing, just at different times.
I'll post the links up when the ******** site allows me to. It's pulling one of those "BECOME A MEMBER TODAY AND HAVE ALL THE NEWS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS!" stare
I'd like to say something witty or sarcastic, but the only thing that comes to mind is: JESUS MOTHER ******** H CHRIST, DON'T YOU A-HOLE CONSERVATION BIBLE THUMPERS SEE WHAT YOUR SEX EDUCATION OR LACK THEREFORE OF IS DOING TO OUR TEENS?!? YOU DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT THEIR HEALTH! WHAT IF THAT WAS YOUR DAUGHTER!!!

Ok... so the thing was alive when it was born. I can't imagine it have being very big otherwise she would have noticed her abdomen swelling up. Unless of course she was chubby. Does it say?
But holy crap! They want to give her the death-penalty?! She did not intend to kill it. She didn't even intend to HAVE it.
Right-wing Conservative asshats... you are condemning mere children to death with your abstience-only bullshit that has been proven over and over again to not work!!!

Am I supposed to interpret that as she didn't realize a baby had been squeezed out of her v****a? That'll be hard to prove.

I haven't seen any other stories on this but I think it's more along the line of Post traumatic stress or trauma induced amnesia. She had the baby and freaked out basically. Either way, unless she took a knife to the baby I don't think she deserves to be punished. She's just a kid who was traumatized and frightened of what just happened. Tossing her in Juvie isn't going to help anyone, especially the kid. *edit* Okay I read another news report. She tried to flush the baby down the toilet and it died. I'm still on the kid's side.

eek That's sooo crazy.
I wonder how she didn't know that she had given birth? Then again, always possible I guess..
I mean a friend told me that when her ma had her first period, her grandma "slapped a pad on her" and only told her "There, now your cursed. You'll have it the rest of your life."
While not as extreme, I know that even in my own family sex education doesn't really exist. But still..... the average 14 year old has to know a bit about her body, right? She must have had her period before and been sexually active. Maybe I'm weird, but I just can't understand not knowing what was going on.

The girl needs help. If she tried to flush it down the toilet, she needs help to find out what the hell's going on with her, and why she felt she had to do that.

Um people, it is very possible for someone not to know they are pregnant.
Hell - my period is never normal, so I can not use that as an indicator of pregnancy. Most teen girls do not have a regular period, and coupled with the fact that they're being fed s**t abstinence ed, the teens probably are doing things out of misinformation. Like a coke douche, if he doesn't orgasm - you won't get pregnant, you can't get pregnant from a**l sex, if he masturbated beforehand - he can orgasm inside of you because he used up all of his sperm beforehand, two condoms are better than one etc.
A few weeks ago, I learned one of my not so close friends has believed all her life up until (well I told her differently) that girls pee out of their vaginas. This girl is 17, a senior like me, and is going onto a well to do state college that I even would have a hard time being accepted to.
A second incident caught me off guard this school year. A girl in my class who has her locker two down from mine had a baby last month. The thing is - I didn't even notice she was pregnant until the very last month when she let people know she was pregnant. This girl is a natural plump girl. She isn't fat, just plump and had no signs of a pregnancy. Why did she wait so long to tell then? She was waiting for her father or uncle/ some male person in her immediate family to leave because the baby she had is mixed raced (black/white) and she was afraid.
So if this girl in the story didn't know she was pregnant in the first place, having a bloody object just plop out of your v****a in a school bathroom would very much traumatize her. Hell if that was me, I'd probably try to flush it down the toilet too! I'd be so ******** scared I wouldn't even think straight, I'd think "GET IT AWAY!"

I've heard a couple stories about girls not even knowing they were pregnant, and depending on how far along or how the baby developed (could have been really small anyways), no one would notice. On top of that, as she just turned 14, as someone already pointed out, her period might not have regulated yet. One of my friends, when we were in high school, only had her period maybe 2-3 times a year for a little while there. Also, I might be willing to believe she hadn't even had her first period yet, but was having sex and just happened to get pregnant before her first period would have happened. *shrug* Just throwin some ideas.

Here are some excerpts from the local new station. Quote: “That’s really bad. I cannot believe it. You are like destroying God’s creations,” student Joshua Contreras said. “I’m just shocked that some girl could throw away the life of a young, little being,” Neris Ibarra said. Luckily, there are other students who aren't as judgemental and actually care about the girl's health.Quote: "They're really really concerned about the little girl's welfare," Clausen said. "They want to know how she's doing, if she's going to be OK. They're very concerned about how she actually is physically." I got the above from MyFox Houston.

What the hell does you using protection have to do with you being atheist? There are plenty of smart Christians, plenty of respectful Christians, and plenty who aren't "dumb a** Bible thumpers". And plenty who use protection (or plan to when they find the right person) AND support sex education past "omg dunt have da sex!!!111". And I don't think condemning someone for being Christian is any better for condemning a girl for having a child before marriage. Don't you think that's just a TAD hypocritical? /soapbox @ thread: I think that the girl should get in some trouble, because she killed a full term child that could have, possibly, lived and did not come forth when she could have and had an abortion. Though, it should not be too strict because a) she's a minor and b) if she can't even remember having the child, she is obviously traumatized by it.

There are cases of people not knowing they are pregnant or even gain that much weight (well they gain it but they don't look like it). My mom worked in the ER as a receptionist and my aunt was a nurse, so they have seen this happen before. These women still have periods, no morning sickness or other signs. It's rare but it happens. It's a shock thing that might have blanked her memory or the pain was bad enough to make her white out. I remember reading in a magazine about a woman going to the ER, complaining about bad cramps... had her periods and everything, the docotr told her that she was going into labor.
I hope she doesn't get the death penalty. By the looks of the article we aren't getting the full story. We don't know what happened between the birth and the death of the baby. That would be the key point about her innocence or, I hope it won't be, guiltiness. I think the jury and judge would know the difference between infant murder versus death from complications such as the v****a crushing the infants skull, not openning up the airways, choking umbilical fluid, and cord wrapped around the neck.

Actually, it's been let known that she tried flushing the newborn down the toilet and he drowned. It's in the first article I posted. Personally, I don't think the girl should be punished, but should be put into counseling and a slue of other things especially if she did go into shock during the labor and doesn't remember her actions.

I'd think that warrants a helluva lot of counselling, not to mention that she might feel guilt once the shock is gone. I feel really sorry for her - maybe her actions weren't right, but she clearly can't have been thinking straight.
