PostPosted: Tue Apr 01, 2008 2:36 pm

He opened the door and heard the soft tinkle of a bell. "Alex?!" He shouted, then saw that she was standing around the bar sweeping up. "You know i did that last night." He smiled and walked up to her wrapping her in a hug. "I went to a supplier to pick up the absynth i ordered." He reached into the sack he was holding and pulled out a beautifully decorated bottle full of green liquid. "You'll have to determine a price and how to serve it i dont know much but it was worth a lot back on earth. It was even illegal in some countries."

Alex turned at teh sound of the door opening. She smiled and hugged him back. "Heh, it's kind of hard not too when you can hear the dust on the floor." she joked. She looked at the liquid in teh bottle. "Hmm, well price is usually determined my how much we bought it for, and whether it's any good."

He pulled out a small vid-screen watch he stole from the halfway house. He pulls up the information on the small 3-d screen that jumped out of the face. "I dont know, i dont drink, i do the coyote ugly if anyone buys me a shot." He randomly kissed her as the information loaded.

Absinthe is a distilled, highly alcoholic (45%-75% ABV), anise-flavored spirit derived from herbs, including the flowers and leaves of the herb Artemisia absinthium, also called “wormwood.” Absinthe is typically of a natural green color but is also produced in both clear and artificially colored styles. It is often called “the Green Fairy.”

Although it is sometimes mistakenly called a liqueur, absinthe is not bottled with added sugar and is therefore classified as a spirit.[1] Absinthe is uncommon among spirits in that it is bottled at a high proof but is historically diluted with water when it is drunk.

Absinthe originated in Switzerland. However, it is better known for its popularity as an alcoholic drink in late 19th- and early 20th-century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers. Due in part to its association with bohemian culture, absinthe was opposed by social conservatives and prohibitionists. Charles Baudelaire, Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde, and Aleister Crowley were all notorious “bad men” of that day who were (or were thought to be) devotees of the Green Fairy.

Absinthe was portrayed as a dangerously addictive, psychoactive drug. The chemical thujone, present in small quantities, was blamed for its alleged harmful effects. By 1915 absinthe had been banned in most European nations and the United States. Although absinthe was vilified,[2] no evidence has shown it to be any more dangerous than ordinary liquor. Its psychoactive properties have been much exaggerated.

A revival of absinthe began in the 1990s, when countries in the European Union began to reauthorize its manufacture and sale. As of February 2008, nearly 200 brands of absinthe were being produced in a dozen countries, most notably France, Switzerland, Spain, and the Czech Republic.[3]

"All the information is from old earth. I dont really know if there is any documentation on the stuff on weyard." He looked it over as he listened to the area. She was right you could hear the dust. "By the way your hearing the dust on the cieling being moved by the A/C."

Rasta followed the man quietly, commenting casually when the chance presented itself. Three different shops, each with a completely different selection and layout. Just wandering the aisles and looking at all the different colored designs and containers made him think. What baser instincts do humans have that compel them to select a product based on aesthetics? Were we all really so easy to manipulate?

After the stranger had selected a large crate of especially exotic looking green bottles Rasta followed him five blocks back down the road to the door of a decently adorned inn. Upon entering he found it to be much more pleasurable than the inn he currently staid in. He also guessed that it was much more expensive.

Rather than following the man behind the counter Rasta simply took a seat near the door and watched the exchange between the two. Obviously the girl was some sort of proprietor and he apparently worked for her. That gave him an idea. What if he asked her for work? Such a decent inn seemed woefully understaffed with only two people. There were probably others who worked there who were just off duty, but it was always worth a try. Leaning back in the chair he waited patiently for an opportunity to present his request.

Alex read all the information over and smiled, giving him a quick kiss back. "Prehaps we'll give a free shot to the first five customers and see how they like it, then decide from there. Sounds like some really good stuff though." she looked over at the new comer. "Oh, Welcome to the Safe Haven, what can we get ya?" she asked.

Rasta looked up from the cup rings on the glass tabletop to see the apparently young woman addressing him. Standing up, he pushed his chair back under the table and quickly paced over to where Kris had been standing before he had begun to put up the new bottles.

“My name is Rasta, and though occasionally enjoy a strong drink or three I wanted to talk to you about what I can do for you. I am a skilled laborer; good at hauling, stocking, and I am literate so I can handle filing work and contracts.”

As his practiced speech began to unfold as it had at so many job opportunities before he couldn’t help but feel a slight twinge of guilty monotony. Such a logical man as Seth he had not encountered in many weeks, and he seemed close to the woman addressing him now. Maybe than being more than a part of H.E.C. corporate scheme this woman deserved a dose of creativity as well. Something separated the two from the grayness that Rasta had let himself become accustomed to.

"Wow, I'm just getting all sorts of new employees. Let me talk it over with Seth first and get to know you better first then we'll talk. I don't normally hire people I don't know personally, or have seen work before. If you don't mind sticking around for a bit though I"ll have an answer for you by teh end of the day." She offered a kind smile, though she kept her manner business like. Her ears picked up the nervous beat of his pulse as he spoke. "Also, relax, I'm not going bite you or anything." she joked.

“Well… In that case what do you recommend I do to pass the time?” Leaning casually with one hand on the bar.

“Perhaps any quick chores in which I can showcase my talents? I guess I can let these first couple of hours go by free.” Rasta joked with a smirk on his face. Of course he would let the first couple of hours go by free. He would do whatever amount of work she required if it meant for sure he would have steady work. Maybe he could even work in return for rent on one of her storage rooms. It would most definitely be a step up from his current residence.

Alex smiled and handed him teh broom she had been holding. "If you want to sweep that would be good. Seth just informed me that eh dust I hear shifting about is on the ceiling so I"ll be taking care of that."

Taking the broom from Alex, Rasta resumed the job where she had left off. ‘Hearing dust on the ceiling?’ What a strange thing to say. With a mental shake of his head he continued sweeping while silently spending the rest of the time contemplating his chance at a fresh start.

A good thirty-five minutes later Rasta straightened his back and wiped single a bead of sweat from his brow. “Ahh… Maybe I’m just better at lifting and hauling? Or writing stuff?”

Looking over the product of his labors he couldn’t see anything out of place, but then again this woman could hear dust in the ceiling.

Alex was on a step stool getting in teh corners with a damp rag, and wiping it over the ceiling in some places. Normally she wouldn't do this, and she sometimes forgot that not everyone could hear the same things she could. Finishing up she looked at the floor. "Nice job. Other then taking inventory in teh back, which I"m pretty sure Seth did last night, there's not much else to do other then wipe down tables."

Wiping down tables. Something that sounds so simple has a surprisingly complex process. First Rasta took the dry rags Alex offered and soaked them in a prepared bucket of sanitized water. Ringing them out thoroughly, he began a careful wiping of each table, wiping the excess into the palm of his hand to toss in the nearby trashcans.

“I don’t know how you came to be the proprietor of this inn, but these are some elegant tables. I haven’t seen real glass in almost three years. And they seem relatively new too, not a lot of scratches or wear.”

Tossing the old rag back into the bucket behind the bar Rasta pulled himself up a barstool and sat down, glancing around the room in search of a clock.

Alex smiled. "It's nothing fancy, A person I knew that came from Earth gave them to me when his business fell through. The building too. He had a fancy restraunt set up here but the crowd he got was mostly uppity HEC employees. When he closed down I asked if I could use it and live here. I use to work for him and he figured I'd do a better job running it anyway. I turned it into a sort of tavern and now we draw teh exact opposite type of people that he use to cater too." She stood behind teh bar as she spoke, wiping out glasses that had been put through a quick rinse cycle.

Rasta’s eyes perked up at her short explanation of how the tavern came into her possession. What an interesting way to put it.

“I suppose you mean that this is a regular meeting place for people who aren’t on good terms with the H.E.C.? Or pretty much everyone without a government salary?” Now he was interested. With an environment of peers, his natural abilities and his disgust at the current status quo might actually lead to something.

“Or maybe just a few loudmouths who come in on their breaks to complain how little H.E.C. pays them for their menial positions.”
