When you visit a Dojo do not expect to be taught Ninjutsu in the old ways. How many Dojo's can truthfully say that they have Horses, Yari, Naginata, Explosives, etc. or even that the Sensei would know how to use these themselves. The art of NINJUTSU covered all of these things and much more. The term Ninjutsu has now been replaced by Budo-Taijutsu in both the Bujinkan and the Genbukan due to the fact that this is perhaps more accurate as only 3 on the 9 schools taught in these dojo were Ninjutsu Ryu

What you should expect to be taught at the very least is :-

Tai-Jutsu......................Unarmed combat, including Daken Tai-Jutsu (Striking, Kicking, Blocking), Jutai-Jutsu (Grappling), Nage Waza (Throwing Techniques), Taihen-Jutsu (Silent Movement)

Kaiten...........................Rolls

Junan Taiso...................Body conditioning

Bo-Jutsu.......................Stick and Staff fighting

Ken-Jutsu.....................Sword techniques

Seishin Teki Kyoyo.......Spiritual refinement

These are the BASIC TECHNIQUES. If your Instructor does not teach these things ask him/her why ?
Have you seen your Instructors certificates ? Do you know who his Teacher is ? Have you trained with his Teacher ?
Ask questions and ask more. Have you tried other Dojo's ?
If you are going to learn NINJUTSU make sure it is NINJUTSU you are being taught.

Do Not Reply, These are For Information Only-Thank You

UNARMED COMBAT

The unarmed combat of ninjutsu, called "Taihonjutsu", has a lot of differences to today's other martial arts systems.
Centuries have proven that techniques, which work for one, won't always work for another; therefore techniques develop continously to suit each individual’s physique.
The basis for ninjutsu lies in the elements of nature: Wind, Water, Earth, Fire and Wood (Void).
Each of these elements provides a multitude of techniques for each different striking tool or weapon.
For example:

aa1. Water element :- a) Ichimonji no kamae b) Doko no kamae - Techniques in this element move backward then forward in a zig-zag formation.

aa2. Wind element :- a) Hira Ichimonji no kamae b) Hoko no kamae - Techniques in this element moves forward, sideways and into sircular motions either to the left or right.

aa3. Earth element :- a) Hicho no kamae b) seiza no kamae "sitting posture" c) Fudoza no kamae "sitting posture" d) bobi no kamae - Techniques in this element requires not moving in any direction but keeping a stationary form, with only body ajustments to compliment the defence manouvres.

aa4. Fire element :- a) Kosei no kamae b) jumonji no kamae c) Seigan no kamae - techniques in this elements require a very aggressive and intentive attacking the attack approach , motion of movement is forward and dominant.
aa5. Void element :- Using all of above in combinations - method of thought is serreal, not thinking just reacting.
aa
aa
Each of these elements could be applied with various deflecting techniques or blocking structures, which if combined with striking techniques "atemi" - (striking to vital points) already provides one with a multitude of different various defensive techniques.

BUJINKAN DOJO

Bujinkan Dojo was founded by Sôke Masaaki Hatsumi in honour of his teacher Sôke Toshitsugu Takamatsu. It's an international organization placed in Japan, the city of Noda shi, Chiba ken province.

Bujinkan Dojo in translation means "The hall of the Divine Warrior" or "The training place of the Divine Warrior".

Nine schools of traditional warrior arts are taught in Bujinkan Dojo. Six of them are old samurai schools, which were also taught, trained and used by Ninja, and other three are exclusively Ninja schools. Each of these schools were made based on the styles of warriors who developed these arts through war and combat situations through many centuries, and passed them on from generation to generation. Therefore, Hatsumi Soke has also named this art Ninpo Budo Taijutsu.

Our teacher, Masaaki Hatsumi Sôke is the heir and headmaster of these nine schools passed through centuries from master to student, passed to him by his teacher Toshitsugu Takamatsu Soke. Today Masaaki Hatsumi Soke (the heir and carrier of tradition) combined all those schools into one art and called it Bujinkan Ryu. The name of the schools are:

Togakure ryu Ninjutsu – 34. Sôke.

Gyokushin ryu Ninjutsu – 21. Sôke

Kumogakure ryu Ninjutsu – 14. Sôke

Although all nine schools are taught as one unified school, each of them has it's own history and tradition, it's secrets, it's technics and tactics, it's weapons and ways of fighting and using these weapons in combat.

The traditional Ninja had to master and perfect 18 basic categories of warrior arts called Bugei Juhappan. In Bujinkan Dojo some of these warrior arts are trained today:
1. Seishin Tekky Kyoyo – spiritual and mental perfection
2. Taijutsu – the art of unarmed combat which includes the technics and skills of Taihenjutsu, Dakentaijutsu, Koppojutsu and Koshijutsu.
3. Ken jutsu / Biken jutsu – the art of using the samurai sword - Daisho, Ninja To – Ninja sword, Tanto, Kodachi, etc.
4. Bo jutsu – the arts of using various sticks
5. Shuriken jutsu – the art of throwing blades
6. So jutsu – the art of using spears and combat technics with spears
7. Naginata jutsu – the art of using japanese helbard and combat technics with japanese helbard
8. Kusarigama – the art of using a weapon with blades and chain
9. Kayaku jutsu – the art of using firearms and tools, fire and explosives
10. Henso jutsu – the art of disguise and imitation
11. Shinobi Iri – the art of stelth moving, invisibility and ways of penetrating and entering
12. Ba jutsu – the art of riding and cavalry
13. Sui ren – the art of cobat in water: moving in water and diving
14. Bo ryaku – strategy and tactics of combat in urban enviroment and open space
15. Cho Ho – espionage
16. Inton jutsu – art of hiding, avoiding and camouflage, the use of Goton po
17. Chi Mon - geography
18. Ten mon - meteorology

However, all these technics and skills in Ninpo Budo Taijutsu have their subskills, which are taught under 9 schools of Bujinkan.

During the 70's of the last century Hatsumi Soke for the first time presented to the world the Bujinkan Dojo and was the only one who started to teach Ninjutsu and Ninpo Budo Taijutsu technics in the world. Until that time, nothing or almost nothing was known about Ninjutsu. This created great attention and huge publicity all over the world.

Unfortuntely, after that various so called and false "masters and teachers" of this warrior art, of which no one practically knew anything or mentioned it (not even in Japan), appeared who try to deceive people by introducing themselves falsly and by selling lies to them.

Since then Hatsumi Soke is fighting strongly to ensure to this, over a thousand year old art, the status that it really deserves, which goes against the wrong opinion created by movies and incompetent journalists who picture Ninja and Ninjutsu as mercenaries and killers, and not as honorable and true masters of this warrior art who used this art for selfdefence and survival and improving themselves as a person and as a warrior. Finally Hatsumi Soke succeeded and in today's time Ninjutsu and Bujinkan get the status they deserve, where it shows quality, the true value and full scale of this art, and where it recieves a lot of credit.

Today Hatsumi Soke teaches on regular trainings in Budokan Tokyo (a big complex for training martial arts), and in Bujinkan Honbu Dojo (master Dojo) – Bujinden .

From the 80's of the last century, Soke has taught on TaiKai seminars all over the world, on which he passed his teachings, on which students from all over the world participated, but now he teaches only in Japan. The warrior art of Bujinkan Ninpo Budo taijutsu is presented and is taught in more then 40 countries. Thousands of students travel to Japan every year to receive direct teaching from Hatsumi Soke and his Shihans. That also includes Shidoshies and Shihans (senior instructors) who are responsable for expansion of the tradition of Ninja warriors in their countries.

Hatsumi Soke has set some rules and ethics to become a part of Bujinkan Dojo which are applied by Shihans and Shidoshies in their countries and they can be seen here.

THE RULES OF BUJINKAN HOMBU DOJO

First of all, only those persons who consent to this Bujinkan Dojo agreement and are resolved to adhere to it will be allowed to join. Persons who think they cannot adhere to it will not be allowed to join. Accordingly,

1.

Only persons who have carefully read this Bujinkan Dojo agreement and agree to it will be allowed to join.
2.
Only persons who are able to show the determined consistency of true persevering self-control as martial artists will be allowed to join.
3.
A physician's medical report is required. In particular, persons who are mentally unhealthy, persons addicted to drugs, and those who are mentally abnormal will not be allowed to join.
The "requirement of a physician's medical report" includes, for example, persons having illnesses which risk the prevention of the pursuit of martial arts, and the kind of abnormal personalities, abnormal physical constitutions, etc. which the person cannot personally control.
4.
Persons having a past criminal record will not be admitted. Additionally, persons who behave in a delinquent fashion, persons who commit crimes, and persons who cannot keep the law in Japan will also not be permitted to join.
5.
Persons who do not keep the rules of the Bujinkan, who, as both students and members of society, commit shameful acts will be expelled. For example, there are many persons who, in the past, came to Japan and knocked at the gate of the Bujinkan, but were drunken brawlers, mentally abnormal, those who by their delinquent behavior put their own thoughts first and did not think about the trouble they were causing for others, those who pursued evil desires and committed acts contrary to the traditionally righteous attitude of the Bujinkan. All such people will be subject to expulsion.
6.
With regard to any accidents incurred during training, either in the dojo or another location, only persons who can avoid causing trouble for the Bujinkan will be allowed to join.
This is an important matter. Accidents are inseparable from the pursuit of martial arts, and persons who cannot resolve these matters themselves will absolutely not be admitted. To clarify a second time, the Bujinkan Dojo will assume absolutely no responsibility for accidents arising during the course of training, no matter what the location.
7.
Persons who have joined the Bujinkan must be sure to have the membership card which is issued every year. This is to preserve the honor of Bujinkan members and, as nobility with the peace of the martial heart, to show that warriors of friendship protect the great way of the Bujinkan Dojo by the gathering of comrades who have the heart of the martial artist. The power of warrior virtue, the proven reason for the loyalty, filial piety and love of friends in the martial arts.
8.
The tradition of the Bujinkan is something which shows the universality of nature and the life of the human race, and is that pursuit of martial arts which enlightens the natural mysteries that exist in them.

Know that the secret of taijutsu is the foundation of peace
If you study this, you can walk the path of the immovable heart

Dojo Instruction

Know that perseverance is, first of all, for but a brief period of time.

Know that the path of man is justice.

Forget the heart of greed, comfort, and discrimination (reliance).

Consider sorrow and bitterness to be natural laws, and simply take advantage of the enlightenment of the immovable heart.

With a steady heart, do not stray from the path of loyalty and filial piety, aspire deeply to the ways of both literary and martial arts.

The rule of the Dojo is to keep the above 5 laws.

Ranks from 11th dan through 15th dan of the "Man" level will be divided into 5 levels: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void, and will be the highest ranks in Bujinkan Dojo Happo Biken. The 5th dan examination is of a spiritual nature and is something which is done by Soke. A 15th dan will be considered to be a true shihan.

Currently, the Bujinkan Dojo has become worldwide in nature. Just as the Earth has time zones, taboos also exist according to each country and race. Buyu should hold each other in respect, working together as Buyu who do not commit taboos, putting the heart of the martial artist first, placing importance on the pursuit of the martial arts, and strive to become a virtuous person.

The person who cannot hold to the above will be expelled.

Guidelines For Participation In The Bujinkan

1.
The Bujinkan shall be open only to those who agree with and uphold the guidelines of the Bujinkan Dojo. Those not doing so shall not be allowed to join. Specifically: Only those who have read and agreed with these guidelines shall be allowed to participate.

2.
Only those able to exercise true patience, self-control, and dedication shall be allowed to participate.

3.
A physician's examination report shall be required. Specifically, individuals with mental illness, drug addiction, or mentally instability shall be barred from joining. The necessity of such a report concerns individuals who may present a danger to others, for example, those with infectious diseases or illnesses, individuals with clinically abnormal personalities or physiology, and individuals lacking self-control.

4.
Individuals with criminal records shall be turned away. Trouble makers, those who commit crimes, and those living in Japan who break domestic laws shall be turned away.

5.
Those not upholding the guidelines of the Bujinkan, either as practitioners or as members of society, by committing disgraceful or reproachable acts shall be expelled. Until now, the Bujinkan was open to large number of people who came to Japan. Among them, unfortunately, were those committing violent drunken acts, the mentally ill, and trouble makers who thought only of themselves and failed to see how their actions might adversely affect others. Through their actions, such people were discarding the traditional righteous heart of the Bujinkan. From this day forward, all such people shall be expelled.

6.
Regarding accidents occurring during training (both inside and outside the dojo), one should not cause trouble to the Bujinkan. This is an extremely important point. Those unwilling to take personal responsibility for accidents occurring during Bujinkan training shall not be admitted. Reiterating for clarity, the Bujinkan shall not take responsibility for any accidents happening in the course of training, regardless of the location.

7.
All those joining the Bujinkan must get an annual membership card. This card not only preserves the honor of the Bujinkan members, it indicates you are part of a larger whole--one whose members come together with warrior hearts to better themselves through training and friendship. It evinces the glory of warrior virtue, and embodies both loyalty and brotherly love.

8.
The tradition of the Bujinkan recognizes nature and the universality of all human life, and is aware of that which flows naturally between the two parts:

•"The secret principle of Taijutsu is to know the foundations of peace.
•To study is the path to the immovable heart (fudoshin)."

9.

The beginner training starts with following levels:

Kyu levels - beginners
From 1.Dan to 5.Dan - Ten (heaven)
From 5.Dan to 10.Dan - Chi (earth)
From 10.Dan to 15.Dan - Jin (human)

10.
From 11.Dan to 15.Dan, levels will be divided to following: Chi (earth), Sui (water) Ka (fire), Fu (wind) and Ku (void); Happo Hiken will be tought on these levels. 15. Dan can be given only by Soke. Only the true Shihan will recieve the 15. Dan.

11. Recently, the Bujinkan has become truly international. Just as there are various time zones, so exist various taboos among the world's peoples and nations. We must respect each other, striving to avoid such taboos. We must put the heart of the warrior first, working together for self-improvement and for the betterment of the Bujinkan.

12.
Those not upholding the above-mentioned guidelines shall be forced out of the Bujinkan.

Devet škola Bujinkana

Togakure Ryu Ninpo Happo Hiken

Translated it means: "The Hidden Door School

It is in fact one of the oldest ninjutsu schools. After a lost battle, Nishina Yukihiro, father of Daisuke, find a refuge in the mountains, and he find a village Togakushi on the Togakure mountain. There he met a priest by the name of So-o, who was practicing Shugendo religion, a religious practice based on magic. Yukihiro started to learn Shugendo and ninjutsu. Togakure Ryu was created by his son, Daisuke who changed his name in Daisuke Togakure, and he was the first Soke ofTogakure Ryu.

Ryu is based on low and wide body positions, and powerfull strikes. It is a complete fighting system, in it there are many punching and kicking techniques, also techniques with sword, spear, kusarigama (a chain and a blade), and a secret weapon called Sanpo Hiden, which was characteristic only for this school . Sakki test (or a test of killer intention, where candidate sits with his back turned to Soke, who suddenly attacks the candidate, and a candidate is required to move from the cut) comes from Togakure Ryu. School has been passed on through the centuries, and Hatsumi Sensei is it's 34-th Soke.

Gyokko Ryu Koshijutsu

Translated it means: "The Jewel Tiger Schol

It is believed that this Ryu was created by the Chinese princess. The techniques came to Japan from China, during the T'ang dynasty, and it was brought to Japan by a Chinese priest called Cho Gyokko. 1.-st Soke was Tozawa Hakuunsai, but the first man who organized it as a Ryu was Sakagami Tari Kunishuge, who developed it and used between 1532. and 1555. School was then given to Momochi Sandayu, who was very famous ninja of his time. Momochi family handed the school down to the Toda family, so Toda Shinryuken Masamitsu gave it to his grandson Toshitsugu Takamatsu, and he gave it to his student Masaaki Hatsumi, who is the 28.-th Soke.

Gyokko Ryu uses circular and fast movements based on the attack to the opponent's vital points, Koshijutsu Atemi Waza. It is also a complete fighting method, that combines techniques of unarmed combat with all kinds of weapons, such as sword, spear, long stuff etc.

Kukishinden Ryu Happo Hikenjutsu

Translated it means: "The Nine Demons School

It is believed that this Ryu also came from China. It is considered to be older from the Kamakura period, but first written materials date from that time. The emperor Go-Daigo gave the name "Kuki" to the Samurai Yasushimaru Takazaneu, who helped him in the battle, and the emperor sad that he fought like the nine deamon ("Kuki"). Izumo Kanja Yoshiteru organized the Ruy with all it's specialties.

It is a complete fighting system, based on unarmed fighting, and spear-, short stuff-, long stuff-, and naginata (a kind of a halberd) techniques, also on the techniques of throwing projectiles, techniques that were used on battlefield, but also on strategy, use of fire and water, invisibility techniques, and disguise. The fourth generation, under the leadership of Kuki Nagato, formalised Kukishin Ryu completely. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, studied Kukishinden Ryu Happo Hikenjutsu, under Kuki clan, and later he created a new system, called Kukishin aikido. There are several Ryuha (schools), but only a few of them kept the ninja tradition, and the rest of them lost or changed that aspect during decades. Dr.Hatsumi is the 28.-th Soke of this Ryu.

Shindenfudo Ryu Dakentaijutsu

In translation: "The Immovable Heart School".

The founder of this Ryu was Izumo Kanja Yoshiteru, who was also it's 1.st Soke. He studied Chinese Kempo Boxing in the beginning. Some of those techniques can still be seen in this Ryu. The same person was also Soke of Kukishinden Ryu. School is specialized in jutaijutsu, and dakentaijustu, ie. throwing, holding and striking techniques. The secret principle of this Ruy is the principle of nature. One of of Jigoro Kano's (the founder of judo), best student Takenaka Tetsunoke also studied Shindenfudo Ryu.
Dr.Hatsumi is the 26.th Soke of this Ryu.

Gyokushin Ryu Ninpo Happo Hiken

"The Jeweled Heart School".

The founder of this Ryu, and it's first Soke was Sasaki Goeman Teruyoshi, who was also one of the Sokes in Gyokko Ryu. Gyokushin Ryu has many sutemi waza techniques, and it's more focused on the art and techniques of espionage, rather than the fighting. School was taught secretely, and it mixed with other ninjutsu schools. Dr. Hatsumi is the 21.st Soke of this Ryu.

Koto Ryu Koppojutsu

In translation: "The Tiger Knocking Down School".

Koto Ryu came also from China, over Korea to Japan, by an Chinese warrior by the name of Chan Busho. It was many generations before Sakagami Taro Kunishige received it, and organised it as a Ryu. Soke of Gyokko Ryu Sogyokkan Ritsushi was also the Soke of Koto Ryu, but the schools were taught separately, and also the Densho (secret scripts) were given separately.

Koto Ryu is based on punchies an kicks, and it uses shirt distancies with fast and directed strikes - koppo - by which one breakes opponent's bones. It has unique kenjutsu (sword techniques). Dr. Hatsumi is the 18.-th Soke of this Ryu.

Takagi Yoshin Ryu Jutaijutsu

"The High Tree, Raised Heart School".

The founder of this Ruy was Takagi Oriuemon Shigenobu, 1.Soke. It is considered that the teaching of the school started with the priest named Unryu, who lived in the Funagata mountains. He was expert in bojutsu (long stuff techniques), shurikenjutsu (throwing projectiles techniques), yarijutsu (spear techniques), and taijutsu (unarmed fighting), from the Amatsu Tatara Rinpo Hiden, but also he used kodachijutsu (short sword techniques), hanbojutsu (short stuff techniques), tantojutsu (knife techniques), and toritsukejutsu. About 1640. the shool was further developed by 1.st Soke Takagi.

In this Ryu one finds techniques of jutaijutsu and dakentaijutsu, and not using force is emphasized. There are also techniques from which aikido and judo later developed. Teaching is divided in six levels. Dr.Hatsumi is the 17.th Soke.

Gikan Ryu Koppojutsu

"The Truth, Loyalty and Justice School".

The founder of this Ryu, and it's first Soke was Unryu Hangan Gikanbo, who lived about 1558. He was the daimyo of Kawachi province. The scripts say that his punch was so strong that he could break a sword in two parts. He was also a master of hichojutsu and shuriken throwing. Gikan Ryu has many special punchies, kicks, and throwing, as well as a special movement techniques. Dr.Hatsumi is the 15.th Soke of Gikan Ryu.

Kumogakure Ryu Ninpo Happo Hiken

"Hiding in the Clouds School

Kumogakure ryu ninjutsu is complete fighting system. The 1.st Soke and the founder was Heinaizaemon Ienaga Iga. Fighting techniques are similar to those in Togakure Ryu, so it's considered that these two schools mixed during a certain period.

Kumogakure Ryu uses techniques with spear, sword and also yoroi (armor). There are special weapons for this school like for example Ippon Sugi Noburi. Dr. Hatsumi is the 14.Soke of this Ryu.
