Lizzy happily danced about the middle of the room. After Mother had found out about this place, she had wasted no time in getting Miss Riku to rip open a gate to wherever here was and depositing Lizzy here, in this room with soft toys and other kids all around. It was nicer than being all alone at home, she reasoned, and so many toys! She'd at least touched all of them and had loved the xylophone. But now she was bored with that and she had decided to spin about. After almost knocking over a little dark-haired kid, one of the adults had relocated her to the middle, which was fairly clear of children.
Another grown-up opened the door and came inside. Automatically, she stopped spinning and lifted one hand in a joyous greeting. "Hi!" Her smile was huge and showed all her teeth. "I like you," she said to him, just like she had said to everyone else. "Let's be friends, okay?"

Antony blinked at the new little girl, taken a bit off-guard by this statement for some reason before he smiled at her. "Why thank you, little princess," he said in his most princely manner. "I would like to be your friend."
Now many would ask why the now more cynical, and obviously drier Antony was still visiting the daycare center after school was over, rather than going straight home to do his homework, as he should. He had, actually, for the past few afternoons. But somehow he had found himself heading this way out of habit, and with that greeting, he found himself staying, as well.
"My name is Antony," he said. "And yours?"

She giggled and clasped her hands. "I'm Elizabeth. Mother calls me Lizzy, though." Her hands flared out like a flower at that, and she skipped a circle around Antony with the same gleeful air. "You're big! And your hair is blue. The sky is blue, too, and some kinds of fishy, and people's eyes can be blue, but why is your hair blue too?" When she stopped in front of Antony again, her smile was large and vapid. "You have a wonderful cape," she told him. As if he didn't already know!

He sat down on the floor so he didn't have to keep leaning down. He tried to ignore all the things that could possibly get on a daycare floor while doing so. "My hair is blue because I was born with blue hair," he told her. "Probably because it goes well with my eyes, I would say."
Not really, but it amused him to think so. "And I'm big because I grew that way."

"So I get to grow big, too? Will I be big as you? How come you don't have wings?" She leaned forward, close enough that her nose was almost touching his. Her eyes were positively huge. "Your eyes are very blue." With a satisfied smile, she followed Antony's lead and sat, but she was rather more messy about it and her skirt ended up all over. She fussed with it until it folded as she wanted to, then occupied herself with trying to copy Antony's posture.

"I doubt you'll get as big as I am," he said. "Boys tend to be bigger than girls. And I'm even bigger than my father. At least, I'm taller." He blinked at the wings question, though.
"I don't think wings would let me fly, since I'm so big," he admitted. "Which is probably why I don't have them. They'd be wasted on me."

"Wings aren't wasted on anybody, Antony," she said happily. "Everyone should have wings, then we would all be happy. I'm happy!" She looked around. "Maybe... you have blue hair. And I have wings?" It seemed like a fair exchange, especially since the blue hair was very blue and her wings were very white. And small, so she couldn't fly yet. Maybe sometime soon though. She smiled again.

"That might be," he said. Or it might be that his other gift was a replacement for wings, he thought inwardly. Yeah, both going invisible and having wings that didn't work was equally ridiculous, he decided. An even trade of stupidity.
Not that he would ever tell her that. "Your wings suit you very well," he said instead.

She blushed. "Thanks, Antony!" But what could blue hair do that normal hair couldn't? How confusing! Lizzy gnawed on a thumbnail and looked around. "Do you know patty-cake? Hardly anyone does, I have to teach it, and I don't know how!"

"No," he admitted, "unfortunately I wasn't a baby long enough to learn it." Which was true. He was almost positive he hadn't been a baby for more than a week or two. It made him wonder why Chris had been for so long...
And then he remembered how big Chris was and dismissed the thought from his mind. "Who do you have to teach it to?" he asked.

"Everyone," Lizzy shouted, throwing her hands in her air. She pouted. "I don't want to be little for very long either," she told him. "Everyone talks to me like I'm a baby." The fact that she was a baby seemed to miss her completely. She smiled up at Antony happily.

"I don't think you can pick when you grow," he told her. "I think it happens when it happens, and people will talk to you like you're a baby when you are a baby, then they'll talk to you like a child when you're a child, and a teenager when you're a teenager. It's part of who you are."

"You're smart," she said, after mulling over what he had said for a while. "Do you gotta be big to be smart like you? It's more fun to talk to you than littlies." They had all been more concerned with colors and the soft toys, or else playing with the toy she was playing with. Even if sitting here, still, made her feel itchy (like she should be doing something) it was still better than before... And before had been pretty good!

He looked thoughtful for a moment. "I think," he said after a long second, "that you can be smart at any age. But it's easier to talk about it when you're older. And honestly, you should enjoy this time. It's not very long."

"Really? Only a little bit?" That sobered her a little. "But I can't do lots. I want to do all of it now." She sighed. "S'easy for grownups to say that it's fun to be a kid." Then Lizzy brightened up again. "Kid is a term for a baby goat! Did you know that, Antony?"
