It's a question I've wondered about a lot when it comes to sorting them. Would they be considered books, 'comic books', something else, or does it all just depend on the person making the choice?

I would consider them 'comic books'. Unless they've got a really good story line. wink

*sigh* I agree they would be considered 'comic books', but when you saw the way mom had them she had them with her books just in their own respective spot.
I consider them books and comic books.

Snows_Silence *sigh* I agree they would be considered 'comic books', but when you saw the way mom had them she had them with her books just in their own respective spot. I consider them books and comic books. Seems like to her they're just normal books. To me, they're normal books. Sure, they're based around pictures, but to me, comic books are those magazine style things you get that have like 30 or so pages. Manga have over 200 or so, and actually do have chapters. But suppose it does jsut depends on who you ask.

In Japan, manga are considered a form of literature. Anyone who has read either Nausicaa of the Valley of the Winds by Hayao Miyazaki or Battle Angel by Yukito Kishiro would be inclined to agree with me, as in Japan both of these manga are considered to be among the best science fiction ever written.

"Light" books.
Somewhere between comic books and novels - like junior high (juvenile : 8 - 12 year old) books.

light reading, i'd also put them in their own spot, but i consider them to be books, since they have a cover, beginning, middle, end, characters, plot, etc...etc...

Well, I suppose manga counts as books. I mean they're graphic "Novels". They're just books with LOOOOOOOOOOOTS of pictures! biggrin
Yes, I agree, many manga have the most amazing plotlines, characters, and fantasy worlds (including unique cultures, terms, etc.) and probably wouldn't be the same without the pictures.

Umm I used to work in a book store and Manga was the worst for browers they would take like an entire gay sex series spend hours reading them and then leave them in the history section it was awesome so im a little bias on this no they are comic books that are bigger than normal also they are there for people who are not comfortable with their own sexuality to by the gay porn they always wanted

I think that they aren't really books but to call them "comic books" seems a bit degrading to me, at least the series that I've read. They're in a group of their own so i just call them graphic novels.

I think manga is popular enough and read enough to make it classify as a book. "Comic book" seems a little low for it - I'd simply call it a graphic novel, if not manga.

Manga are comic books. They come from Japan (for the most part) and they read right-to-left, but they are still comic books.

well, I consider them to be lighter books, but heavier than comics, simply because it's a book composed of pictures. It seems to be a matter of opinion, and as with any other, opinions will vary. I have found a few that actually hook me in better than more traditional books, and the pictures show better than words what's going, so they fall closer to the novel category. Other show such a lack of imagination in anything except the drawing that I enjoy them for the laugh, and those are closer to comics. So, as you can see, opinions on manga vary, even as far as the different series go. Classify them as you wish, and happy reading.
